@Arturo Magnus I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and Im in the hacking process now. Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
It seems she can do just about what she wants with that voice of hers, she is truly outstanding and at the top of her game and maybe at the top as far as sopranos go. I have said this before I will again sopranos are born not made.
What makes it hard is holding all the notes for their full value, especially those at the end of the phrases. She doesn't. She is cheating off a full beat at the end of several phrases.
Souzay is not forgotten!!!! nor was he a lousy singer. His recording of this song is the best yet....... Todays singers benefit from the exposure afforded first by television and now by TH-cam, that is why you don't hear him. If he were around today he would knock other average singers off their perches.
Holy night, you sink down The dreams flow down, too Like your moonlight through the rooms Through the people's silent chests They listen softly with desire They call, when day awakens Come back, holy night Sweet dreams, come back!
@@brookeggleston9314 in deed! But he chose to put these words to music after learning that he would soon die. It gives another dimension to the words that he in deed did not write, but chose to accompagny. This leaves a multitude of possible interpretations to posterity. From the simple sweetness of night and dreams, from, like @elisa Gauthereaux said, the momentary escape of day (he calls the night when day returns), from sadness, from mourning life, from accepting one's fate.
@Scott6373 Well shoot Reger for orchestrating it, I agree with. It's a conflict, hearing Ms. Fleming with her amazing ability to float a long line a pleasure, wishing all the time, like you, it was with the piano accompaniment. Check out Barbara Hendricks with Andras Schiff accompanying - it cannot fail to move, just remarkable.
Kehret wieder heil'ge nacht Holder traume kehret wieder is it right, you german speakers, the first kehret instead of kehre? Hehe'' just a curiosity..cause critics failed finding an single error.
jeidi kim You're right, it has to be "kehre wieder heil'ge Nacht" without a "t". Actually she did the same mistake in the line "rufen, wenn der Tag erwacht", in which she sung "rufet".
@@AlexFromTheWoods She did neither thing! Her legato pushed the final *e* of kehre into the *v* sound of wieder. If her *t* on kehret had been more cleanly sung you would have noticed the difference. Nor did she put a *t* on rufen. Same sort of problem to hlame - she simply didn't pronounce it cleanly, but she didn't put different consonants on the end of those words. I did have to listen several times to clear it up in my ears!!
Well, the question is 6 years old: just to get it right: I checked in my grandfathers book from 1913 (Scheidemantel, Meisterweisen, Ernst Eulenburg Leipzig, Wien), page 120 Nacht und Träume, it says: ..Kehre wieder, heilge Nacht! Holde Träume, kehret wieder. (Why: one night singular and many dreams plural).
RF's exquisite performance aside (pure gold!), this Reger orchestration is SO much more pleasing than the original piano accompaniment, which to my ear is always thunderous and poorly voiced, overwhelming the beauty of the vocal line and harmonies.
I personally think the recording Kathleen Battle & Jimmy Levine made in 1990 is superior to any other recording or live performance. It's on here is you search by the lied title and her name.
Well, she is not holding some of the notes for their full value, which is part of the challenge of singing this piece right. There are some dotted half notes which she is singing just as half notes. And, she is doing what many modern singers do, which I consider questionable. She isn't really singing the SONG. She is using the song as an occasion for making extremely beautiful sounds with her voice. She could just as well just intone the vowels, or a random set of vowels, and accomplish the same purpose. I do not see that she is investing herself in the words and expressing their meaning. She is wholly focused on making beautiful sounds. This is what the extreme sport of modern singing has often become. It's a shame. I believe that people one hundred years ago or more SANG much more expressively, because they had not developed the fanatic and extreme engagement in the sound they are making which modern classical song has become characterized by.
Much better with piano accompaniment. Her German is not very distinct. For perfection, listen to Fischer-Dieskau with Gerald Moore accompanying him, sublime!
she is good, but.... for me ... her voice (her sounding) is little bit squeezed occasionally, and her breating support as well not deep as should be, smtimes even weak...
@dziady1... souzay owns no work. none. lousy singer with good french diction. other than that... an irrelevant musician in the 20th century. He is nowhere near the americans nor english. everyone remembers price and flemming but few remember souzay. good grief... why compare him to singers?
She should learn real German diction. Her second vowels in the thifthongs should be shorter and more open. And I wish the key was lower than the arrangement so there is more mystical tone.
This is about 7th straight singer I’ve listened to singing this tonight: I do not tire of this marvelous song!
You left out *not!*
Some of the most beautiful music in the world!
My god. This is beautiful. She is the QUEEN of legato singing. Just stunning.

@Malcolm Lucas happy to help :)
Unbelievable, divine singing! I can't stop listening to it!
Reaches a depth of the soul that only angels can touch
Thanks
Love this piece of music. Very suitable for funerals or weddings. Renee has a stunning voice & sings it beautifully.
Beautifully written by Schubert and beautifully sung by Renee Fleming
Renee Fleming is a force..Period such pure talent!!!!
Staggering beautiful.
beautiful...just beautiful....
Her singing voice is out of this world, and a great tranqulizer to the human
molto legato
beautiful
thank you !
Hermoso!!!! Brava Rennée!!
Astounding singing and Schubert’s masterpiece orchestrated suddenly sounds like Richard Strauss.
Simplemente maravillosa.!!
What a wonderful homage to the genius of Schubert by Reger....

That brought tears to my eyes just superb
This just touches the inner soul in so many ways the passion of both singer and conductor are both so very deep
One of the hardest lieder to sing.
What makes it hard is holding all the notes for their full value, especially those at the end of the phrases. She doesn't. She is cheating off a full beat at the end of several phrases.
I fully agree.with you.. it's even harder to sing in comparison to Schubert's "Du bist die Ruh"
Renée at her best!
the best legato singing ever!
Bravisima Renée Fleming. Exquisito tema
Made my soul sour -- so beautiful!
so beautiful
Wonderful
Es ist sehr schon und Wonderbar.
Renee Fleming.....wow !
Estou maravilhado...
SUBLIME!
DIVINELY NOCTURNAL - NOCTURNALLY DIVINE
Wow... I´m dying :,)
This song just melted my ears...
Exquisita Renée fleming.¡¡¡ Un maravilloso tema.¡¡¡
Quelle beaute!

Beau morceau
Hermoso!❤️

I think this has more to do about Schubert's feelings of leaving the harsh reality of his life for a dream state where there is no pain.
Schubert didn't write the words!!

💔💔💔💔😢😢😢😢😢 wow
You should post the name of the conductor and orchestra as well. They are equally important.
is it like team work?
Nur mit Klavierbegleitung. Hervorragende Stimme!
David daniels still sings this the best
@Scott6373 Seriously?
😮
You dont need an orchestra for Schubert's Lieder. It is more intimate with piano accompaniment
Alberto Zola sounds so beautiful this way tho
This is awesome!! you crazy?
I don't think so. This orchestra version is also beautiful.
True, but there is more to the piece than just 'intimacy'

Joe Hsu you are correct
Kathleen battle yuk
@Scott6373 Lighten up.
@SteveL2012 Funny, but true.
Besser mit Klavierbegleitung wie von Schubert gemacht.
Gorgeous but I’m not sure about the orchestration tribute . Makes me feel a little icky. Lol. But it’s pretty
Bazantium
And ending mute vowel is not correct. it should not sound like "er" rather it should be more open.

Just enjoy it for what it is a beautiful experience there’s no need to pick it to death ☹️
Very nice but better in a baritone voice ---see Goerne
Much better with piano accompaniment. Her German is not very distinct. For perfection, listen to Fischer-Dieskau with Gerald Moore accompanying him, sublime!
It would be nice if she would get up to the pitch.
Her intonation was fine!!

Not as good as Kiri...
Awful, just awful. The music is sublime, but Renée does it no justice. Nil subtlety. Close to screeching.
What could we expect from someone calling himself Puccini?
Why do you say that? I think this is beautiful
