Thanks for doing this one guys. I saw her at the Atlanta Pop festival in 1969. She followed Led Zeppelin (amazing). When their set was over all of the lights went out and out of the dark, without a band she sang the first "Summertime" notes. 250,000 people stood up, the lights went on and we stood watching her for her entire set. She was one of a kind.

"Summertime" was written by George Gershwin as part of "Porgy & Bess" back in 1934. According to Guinness World Records, "Summertime" holds the world record for the total number of recorded versions of a song (67,591 in 2017). The first version I remember hearing back when was Sam Cooke's hit version from 1958. I discovered many of the other versions on my own as I got older. Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, and Mahalia Jackson recorded classic versions, as did The Marcels, Herbie Mann, and Big Mama Thorton. The other two versions from the sixties that stand apart along with this Janis Joplin version, are Ricky Nelson's "swamp rock" version from 1962 and Billy Stewart's 1966 version filled with blasting horns and rapid fire scat singing like you won't believe. This Janis Joplin version stands out for her singing, of course, but also for its psychedelic arrangement which varies considerably from other versions. Sublime dropped a reggae/dub/hip-hop version in 1997 called "Doin' Time". Check it out.
Janis wore her soul like a blanket trying to protect her from pain, hurt, anger, & even love! This woman was one of a kind, & sadly missed by everyone who loved & understood her music ❤ 💚 💙 She truly was a gift that was only with us for a short time, but what a glorious time it was!!! Thank you both, for such a thoughtful reaction ❤ 💚 💙

I always have such mixed emotions when I listen to (especially when I see her) Janice singing. She was such an immense, raw talent but with a vulnerable and sad, almost tormented soul. She could never escape from her past and ultimately that's what led to her demise at such a young age. She was a true lost treasure.
I have had mixed emotions to her music, too, also had a decade where I couldn't listen to her at all, bcs she brings up so much feelings‼️Janis Joplin was so real, she stood in her own autensity, she's the real shit, that's why she hits us so hard‼️🎯JazzyT.
Thanks. We had the greatest musicians back in the 60s and 70s. I was lucky enough to see her in Vancouver BC. THANK GOD because she died too soon. Part of the 27 club. Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and Janis. She got a different backing band because THE HOLDING COMPANY couldn't keep up with her.
George Gershwin was considered America's classical music composer. Janis took his classical composition and made it her own, blues/psychedelic. Gentlemen, thank you for keeping her music alive for this generation to discover and enjoy.
When Janis was in high school and college she would sing at some clubs in Port Arthur. But, then she would go over the border with friends over the border and watch real blues singers in clubs. she would eat it up and taken it all in. She learned her craft not just from a natural talent but, from observing the true blues where she could and incorporating it into her music.
