She was bullied relentlessly as a kid. She would sneak out of her home and into the back of black churches just to watch the gospel. I did many papers on her in college. I have much respect for her . we lost a legend
I knew some of the stuff about her...I didn't know she snuck into black churches to listen to gospel music. She wasn't my cup of tea in the 1960's when I was growing up but I have in my 70's become a fan.
@@jasonbriggs1853 gosh that was many moons ago when I was in college. I believe the book was called dear Laura? It was written by her sister I will look it up and get back to you. That was 20 years ago that I read it
Wrong! That was Elvus going to Black churches. He was part a Black Baptist choir. As a teenager in East Texas, Janis & friends would sneak to Louisiana Black bars to listen to Blues. Her family shunned her. Both were Southerners & Black people music were their inspiration. Both Freakin Great & Genius.
Janis Joplin sang like she was trying to tear her soul out of her throat. It was impossible for her to live more than her 27 years. She just used up all her strength just to keep going.
Jim Earnest Because the people who said she couldn't sing were never born. In other words they were useless humans with 'nary a thing to offer the world. R.I.P Janis Your voice resonates and echoes eternally.
Some people want commercial cookie cutter everything.. even emotion. Making people sympathetic to your voice is the whole point of singing.. and I dunno how anyone with ears and a soul couldn't be sympathetic to hers, but I guess there are some..
Only people who grew up on industry talent and autotune say that. They don't know organic talent. You can't teach or learn the talent and experiences Janis had.
She modeled herself after Bessie Smith & Big Mama Thornton in East Texas in the early 60s. I loved her then & now. I grieved at 16 when she died of an OD. RIP Pearl. 💔🥲🙏🏻
JANIS is the STUFF OF LEGEND!! - One of my FAV songs EVER!! Crazy that she too, is a member of the 27 club...glad you too enjoy her music! Yea... segregation, racism, hate, and all that crazy stuff needs to stop once and for all... with ya gurl - love & aloha... follow the light and enjoy the music and the magic of life.
Im was a ''90s teenager'', i discovered Janis when i was 16, everybory listening Nirvana and Guns, and me in 90s, listening Janis and the who , i always cry listening to her, now i cried with her and with your reaction, very beautiful
I too loved Janis in the 90’s. My friend was in love with Kurt cobain. I was 16 in 93. I also loved the monkees in 1987 while most were digging New Kids on the Block.
Poor Janis, never really got to feel the full appreciation and respect she eventually would recieve from peers and fans . Every moment spent trying to please someone, feel wanted, part of something, pitiful people make someone feel that way over what they perceive as superiority or fairer looks or better qualities that are given, not earned. She showed em, but did she ever know? She was a little homely, but if you were her friend, familiar with everything about her, how could you not be head over heels in love with her!!??! Baffles me
"Summertime" was written by George Gershwin as part of "Porgy & Bess" back in 1934 and has been recorded numerous times, notably by Billie Holiday, Sam Cooke, and Billy Stewart, whose version resounds with horns and scat singing like you won't believe. This Janis Joplin version stands out for her singing, of course, but also for its arrangement which varies slightly from other versions. Check out her version of "Me and Bobby McGee" when you can.
Music flowed through her veins. ...such a sad, lonely lady, who became an icon. Far before her time...in old fashioned world...music will always be there....
She could rip your soul from your body, vocally stomp on it, then put it back like nothing happened. I'm 64, seen them all, but never seen another Janis. Sometimes when it storms i can hear Janis singing with the angles.
She was a legend..its so sad that she passed only at the age of 27..She (unfortunately) belongs to what people dubbed the 27 Club..The late Great Jimi Hendrix is also a member.
My mom's favorite artist! The entire Pearl album you have to listen too I promise you will love it I grew up on her music because my mom would play her constantly.
My Gma gave me that album when I was in 7th grade. I was OBSESSED! This was in the late 90s so everybody thought I was weird cause I was jamming to Janis. Lol. I related to her so much. Then I watched this documentary on PBS about her. She was born & raised in Port Arthur Texas. I'm from Dallas. She was relentlessly bullied in high school & college. I was in middle & high school. She was my heo. To this day. I love her. She was a beautiful spirit. Inside & out. I wish I could've met her. 🥺🖤
Summertime - Ball and Chain just floors me all the time. The Legendary Janis Joplin was one of a kind. What a talented tortured soul. Her music is timeless. She'll never be forgotten. Rip Janis.
I saw her live in Columbia Maryland @ the Merriweather Post Pavilion this exact same year-1969. My classmates, friends, neighbors and teachers were Black, White, Middle Eastern, Asian, Greek, Pilipino, German old people with tattoos on their wrists and very religious/observant Jewish people AND Muslims. Crime was LOW! We ALL got along - until the huge influx of DRUGS .
Im new to your show I was looking for one of my 60s artist Janis Joplin and I came across your u tube show and you couldn't have picked a better featured artist like Janis Joplin she takes me back to .my times of peace love and rock @ roll. Thank you for such a great guest
If you want to see Janis at her most joyous, please watch her version of “Tell Mama” from Festival Express! It’s soooo underrated, but her best performance ever imo. Love your reactions :)
OMG I loved this reaction. and how you feel the rock and blues videos I have seen you do so far. your beautiful , keep it up, I have to go watch your Tennessee Whiskey vid
The movie "The Rose" was loosely based on Janis. I know you don't react to movies but it stars Bette Midler, it came out in the late 70's and I think you'd really appreciate the movie.
She was the greatest of the white soul singers, sadly died of an overdose in October 1970. Check out her versions of Trust Me, Me and Bobby McGee, and Maybe. Her performance at Monterey was great even though her band sounded pretty weak.
She was bullied relentlessly as a kid. She would sneak out of her home and into the back of black churches just to watch the gospel. I did many papers on her in college. I have much respect for her . we lost a legend

Where did you learn about her sneaking into churches? I've read like every biography and never heard of this?
@@jasonbriggs1853 gosh that was many moons ago when I was in college. I believe the book was called dear Laura? It was written by her sister I will look it up and get back to you. That was 20 years ago that I read it
She's the greatest pop rock singer ever, she sings blues, folk songs, can sing it all.
Janis could sing her pain like nobody else.
She sang all our pain...
But no one hear her pain until she dies
goatboy420 took the words right out of my pain my thoughts exactly
Very well said and nothing else to be said
Janis Joplin sang like she was trying to tear her soul out of her throat. It was impossible for her to live more than her 27 years. She just used up all her strength just to keep going.
Thank you for your soul reaction 🤗🙏🏻💖. Take care ! Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
Fav. Song by Janis Joplin She awesome.
For the life of me I can't understand people who say she couldn't sing, she was amazing!

Deaf people!

You can't teach or learn the talent and experiences Janis had.
That's cause they are Woke & don't know genius when they hear it.
One of the greatest from the 27 club! Gone but not forgotten. RIP Janis, Jimi, Jim, Curt and Amy
Queen of rock!
Just. So. Good. You notice that Robert Plant and Janis Joplin sing the blues very similarly. Janis is just the bomb! Such an amazing voice
She modeled herself after Bessie Smith & Big Mama Thornton in East Texas in the early 60s. I loved her then & now. I grieved at 16 when she died of an OD. RIP Pearl. 💔🥲🙏🏻

Well said. Life can be cruel.
I think that is why she touched so many with her music. Because she told her story in her music and really its all of our stories deep down.
The greatest female singer of her generation.
She is still now and will forever more be a legend!!
My baby Janis! She is a Texas queen!!!!!!! Listen to more of her music. You will LOVE IT!

Don't forget the Ella Fitzgerald version.
The Billy Stewart version is not one of the better known, but it's really amazing.
Music flowed through her veins. ...such a sad, lonely lady, who became an icon. Far before her time...in old fashioned world...music will always be there....
Janis, Jim, and Jimi. Boom boom boom. And the 27 Club got bigger at warp speed. RIP.
She could rip your soul from your body, vocally stomp on it, then put it back like nothing happened. I'm 64, seen them all, but never seen another Janis. Sometimes when it storms i can hear Janis singing with the angles.
With the ANGELS. . . . another great Janais J tune is Ball and Chain.
So much soul and feeling in her voice. She had a hard life unfortunately.
I've always said, and have heard nothing, ever, to change my mind --- Simply the greatest singer, male and female, of all time.
Jimmy Hendrix and Janis Joplin were 27 years old when passed . Different years but same age.. From the same cause. , both legends
To live , become a legend , and die at 27 is remarkable. Few reach that rank in life. I hope you watch more of her live , she deserves that respect
JANIS IS FOOKIN GORIOUS
Girl....I just adore you. I could watch you react to blues music all night...and have.
I love extreme metal ,but I am addicted to Janis.
Janis was the Queen
She was a legend..its so sad that she passed only at the age of 27..She (unfortunately) belongs to what people dubbed the 27 Club..The late Great Jimi Hendrix is also a member.
It feels surreal being in my thirties and still thinking about these people as if they are older, as if they never really left.
Janis is one of my favourite female singers of all time
I was there...she was one of a kind!! and tortured soul!
Summertime Joplin at her best.
Janis Joplin, just like Joe Cocker, always took you to church. And I am an atheist
"Music is the ONLY religion that delivers the goods" Frank Zappa
Frank often talked out of his ass.
Janis Joplin is such a tormented soul who was wanting love her passion in the blues made everyone love her and she could send chills.
Janis Joplin... pure soul.... If she don't move yours, you're dead and buried already.
Go Janis indeed!
I listen to this song again and I wonder what contemporary music could I compare it to
Janis Joplin the acid queen
Oh my god, I’m in love with you girl!!! Loved your reaction on Janis! You remind me of myself the first time I heard Janis.
The studio version is awesome too.
My mom's favorite artist! The entire Pearl album you have to listen too I promise you will love it I grew up on her music because my mom would play her constantly.

You had a cool Mom. Back in the 70's my Mom would go ballistic and scream bloody murder every time I played Janis (always at full volume).

That's old school girl power right there
I'm in love with her voice

That went from a beautiful lullaby to a stairway straight to heaven
Her greatest rendition, and that's saying alot.
Janis is a legend !!!!!
Man has she got some pipes.........................and that's understating it.
In case you haven’t noticed, the band was everything back in the day
They had to take her to another universe so others could experience her deep soul!!! 💕💕🛸🛸👽👽🙏🙏
the greatest female rock/blues singer there ever was
Janis Joplin a bad ass Wao.
There will be another Janis Joplin. The crazy hippie times breed great music.
She the best ❤
Janis Joplin 🙌🏼🔥 She’s from Port Arthur, Texas. I’ve been a fan since forever. Thank you so much for reacting to this.💖
You really have to see Ball and Chain Live to see what she can really do.
Janis So deep She sing like nobody business.

Fact! Best voice ever. She lived hard. ❤️
Turtle Blues off of "Cheap Thrills" when she was the singer for Big Brother and the Holding Company. It'll blow you away.

OMG I loved this reaction. and how you feel the rock and blues videos I have seen you do so far. your beautiful , keep it up, I have to go watch your Tennessee Whiskey vid
This is from the album "Pearl", which has her best songs on it. you should check the album out. It's so sad that she lived such a short life.
Janis could sing everybody else’s pain like nobody else. If you have pain, Janis will find it.
Exactly 💯
anyone that likes joplin is alright with me. Thumbs up girlie girl.
The movie "The Rose" was loosely based on Janis. I know you don't react to movies but it stars Bette Midler, it came out in the late 70's and I think you'd really appreciate the movie.

That’s the same reaction everyone that listened to her the first time had (or should have had)...I’m that old...
Nice piece of singing after the song. Janis has that kind of influence, it seems
Must listen to "Tell Mama" live in Calgary Canada 1970. I would not tell a lie! Unbelievable performance.
🌹Thank You.
Janis. Not the prettiest or cleanest voice but ALL her emotion in every word.
Really?
@@shredgplayer5616 yeah
Turtle Blues by Janis a favorite of mine.
Yep, Turtle Blues & Little Girl Blue; by far her two best songs; she really showed her vulnerability with both of them.
This is as good as any song has ever been sung type shit.
This is Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma level singing.
LMAO "This Chick can sing, this chick can sing" She was powerful.
