  • I have 2 ram lambs, one of whom is too small for his age. Harvest is coming soon and I need to put weight on him. I examine the reasons why sheep might not be putting on size: genetics, lack of nutrition, and parasites. I implement procedures to help put weight on the lambs.

    Minerals! and Azure Standard for the win. Moving every day and access to diverse forage will keep parasite load down as well. Sorry you can't move them now. That's gotta be frustrating.

    Great to see Little Buddy! He's grown a lot. Tell him a viewer says "hi"... Regarding the parasites, Dan. Have you ever heard of parasites being in the meat?? I wonder about that bc I know people raising lamb/beef/goat/hogs/poultry around here who do not check or treat for parasites at all. (Northern Colorado)

    • @christiscamelotgardens47
      @christiscamelotgardens47 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, certain parasites set up in the muscle and will break out when the animal is stressed such as during a move or having babies, etc. That's one of the reasons alot of people don't recommend eating raw sushi or raw meat of any kind.
      The good news is that the vast majority of parasites are killed when the meat is cooked properly or cured properly.

    I am glad you are back you are awesome! What kind of grains do you sow your land with? I have a lot of weeds what can I do?

      Hi Ev! I use a mix of orchard grass, brome, Timothy, and clover (red and white). If you have the ability, I'd get sheep. They'll take care of the weeds for you.

    You can compare the lower eyelid color to a FAMACHA card to help determine which lamb (or goat) have anemia, likely from parasites. I've been following emerging data on how phytonutrients in tree fodder (and tree hay), like condensed tannins, help clear out and prevent parasite infection in ruminants. We feed cut branches of willow, black locust, mulberry, poplar and other trees. Learn more at Steve Gabriel's Silvopasture videos or book. Thanks for this nice vlog! Really enjoying.

    just harvest the tomatoes green - keep the green piece on the end and just put them in the sun on a window sill as you want to ripen them - when you leave the green bit on the top they still taste like vine ripened tomatoes and your harvest will last quite a while inside in a bowl in the fridge and ripened as you need them - they take about a week to ripen on the window sill in the sun

      We always wrapped them in newspaper and put them in the basement. But you can pull the whole plant up and hang it upside down where it won't freeze and the tomatoes should ripen.

    Have you heard of Sandi Brock, the youtube commercial sheep farmer? Maybe she can help with nutrition and different ways to keep sheep healthy and of right size. She lives in Ontario which can be cold and prone to short summer seasons similar to Idaho.

    Well, as for parasites, at least Katahdins, as you have, are known to be parasite resistant.
