Weaning Katahdin Lambs

  • Two of our ewes are struggling with milk production and we have some potential buyers for our lambs. Since the lambs are over eight weeks old and can now thrive without their mother's milk, I decide it is time to start the weaning process to help the struggling mothers and make it easier to sell the lambs.

    I love the fact Annabelle came over wanted attention and instead of blowing her off you stopped and gave her some love.
    🌻have a wonderful tomorrow🌻

    Weaning can be a bit heart breaking but is necessary. Annabelle is such a sweet heart, love her! Thank you for the weaning update, I appreciate it. :)

    I hope they all sell as you wish. They’re looking really great. Miss Annabelle is so sweet. LB sure is an awesome little helper. I love him out there with his own little hook. Too darn cute. Keeping you all in prayer ~Lisa

    Well planned and executed, Dan! I just bought a wether kid (goat) that had not been previously weaned. It's been rough on the little guy -- and on my eardrums, lol. I, too, hope the neighbors are understanding.

      Oooohhh yeah - it would have been better if he had been weaned. It might be a good opportunity for you to bond with him though

    • @jeanettewaverly2590
      @jeanettewaverly2590 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      His previous owners don't usually sell their animals and I don't think weaning even occurred to them. He has certainly bonded with me! Every time he sees or hears me, he calls me, "MAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!"

      I'm glad it's not your health. Family needs always come first. But I know what it's like to have to leave the homestead because of health concerns. So I guess that's where my head went.

    Its always a dilemma when a ewe gives everyrhing to her lambs. They are a super nice group to sell though, you should do well. A nice system too👍 God Bless you

    Is Annabelle ok? It looked like she was shaking and breathing heavy but she was mostly off camera. Maybe just the heat. Little Buddy is becoming quite the helper!

    Thanks for doing this particular vlog. I haven't thought much about the weaning process before and actually feel a little guilty for not doing so. I'm currently looking at what kind of animal I intend to use in a rotational grazing program in the first paddock. I intend to follow with turkeys and finish with chickens. I have been torn between goats and sheep. It seems to me that goats might be a lot more work then sheep. Would anyone help me out with your thoughts. Have a great day every one.

    • @TheGrassfedHomestead
      @TheGrassfedHomestead  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct - sheep are easier than goats. I don't have goats for a reason :)

      I love goats and I had them before.
      I just love goats milk so/too much😋😍 we had to sell them all because of moving to a place w/no land. We've moved again and now I wish I had a lot of them because our new property is completely covered by all kind of berries n apple trees.

    How much grain do you give the ewes when they're pregnant, after they give birth, and when they're in their normal state? How much grain do you give the lambs after they're separated from the ewes? Do you notice that the lambs grow bigger/faster the more grain you give them? I know that's how commercial Suffolks are grown, but I was just wondering if Katahdins were different. Thanks! I've learned a ton from your videos, so keep them coming!👍

    • @TheGrassfedHomestead

    I let my sheep wean them
    100% natural way
    No barns
    No grains
    No deworming
    No chemicals
    No hay if possible some years can get bad I have backup.
    Rotational grazing
    Run chickens behind them
    Cattle with them .
    Cull them if they can’t make it
