  • Put on your pocket protectors, it's time to get nerdy! In this video we're diving into the electrical setup in our 4x4 Sunrader, Amelia. This is one of the most common things we get asked about so it deserves it's own video. We needed a system that could keep us powered while being completely off grid. We go over everything from preparation to the nitty gritty of our wiring diagram. There's a lot to unpack but it's loads of fun!
    Unfortunately we lost a LOT of video we shot at the end of the build due to an SD card that needed to be reformatted. Luckily we took a ton of photos through the process so we'll be walking you guys through the rest of the build with photos to accompany our commentary. It's not how we envisioned finishing this series but in the end we get to be a little more detailed this way so it's not all bad.

    Don’t forget the pros of AGM / lead acid - you can charge these batteries at temperatures well below freezing, which you can’t do with lithium. My rig runs in northern Canada year-round and AGM was the only way to go at those temperatures. AGM was also a third of price which makes up for the lost capacity when only running batteries down to 50%

    Ok, so I’ve binge-watched the entire series and you guys have done an amazing job! There are probably people out there like myself who would love to have you complete custom build-outs for them. Should you ever decide to establish yourself in regular work cycles like the rest of us rats, I’m sure customizing cargo trailers, box vans, and the like would give you a long list of clientele... I’m just sayin’.

    As usual you guys nail the details; but this is in your old camper. I was wondering about the electrical in your new Tundra/4 Wheel Camper. I remember you saying that the 4 Wheel Camper didn't meet your electrical needs because it lacked 120V power; that if you wanted 120V you needed to hook up to "shore" power (this is based on memory, maybe I got some of this wrong). As a result you made some modifications to the 4 Wheel Camper electrical system, including new lithium batteries and an inverter. This allowed you to install some outlets that you could use to power your computers and other stuff. I don't know about your other viewers but I would love it if you would explain, in detail, the electrical system in your new Tundra/4 Wheel Camper; not just the system you get with the camper (solar panels, controls, etc), but a detailed description of the changes you custom-made, what they are and how you did them. Thank you.

    Dude. I have watched so many vids to get a grasp on my project. I'm just tryin to set up a work van that will allow me to charge hand held battery operated power tools. Mabe my phone.

    Fantastic video. A quick question about the Cyrix-Li-ct: the manuals for it mention using a BMS to control it. You don't mention using a BMS and don't seem to have one connected. Is it optional? Thanks!

    Guys, this is the ABSOLUTE best video I've found on wiring a camper- and believe me, I've looked! Great job! Would you please post a photo (or just tell me) where the house batteries connected? Your wiring diagram shows the POS+ of the house batteries connected at the Bussman on the Li Batt side, but I only see the one red wire connected there. Is that where you connected, or did you connect the POS+ from the house batteries to the POS+ on the fuse panel? You guys RoCk! Thank you!

    You have great power setup.
    I have grand plans to upgrade to a lithium setup like yours.
    Sadly for many people, including myself, cost is the number 1 reason for having to stay with AGM batteries.
    In my camper trailer weight is not a big issue, therefor having 2 x 120Ah AGM batteries for a fully usable 100Ah load capacity is fine.
    The cost of my batteries and 240v 7 stage charger was $500 here in Australia plus my 160w folding solar panel was bought $120aud on sale at a caravan and camping exhibition down in Brisbane.
    Hopefully with the big electric vehicle companies developing lithium tech, batteries and charging systems will hopefully drop in cost fairly rapidly for recreational users?

    You mentioned you had three flexible panels with your van that failed. What brand were they and can you explain how they failed? Thanks for any info! I've been looking at a Renogy flexible for my camper. Great video btw.

      Honestly, don't remember the brand, they were just purchased off of Amazon. The problem with them is that the protective coating over them is super fragile. If they got scratched at all the would eventually melt...which is a problem.

      The battery monitor that you actually interact with is the circle at 6:30. Not sure if that's what you're asking or if you're wanting to know more about what makes up the shunt.

    Hi there, just watched the electrical set up video and curious about having a 24v solar panel. Does the victron controller sort the power from the 24v panel to the 12 v batteries? Ive got a 200w 12v panel feeding 2x 110ah leisure batteries on my van but looking at doing another and never gave the 24v any thought really. Was your only reason the wire thickness for this choice or are the 24 v panels any better performance wise, thanks Bob

      Solar panel output voltages vary quite a lot even from a single panel, let alone wiring them in series or parallel. The '24V solar panel' they're talking about likely outputs anywhere up to 32~40V 'unregulated' and so once a regulator is added, the output is then suitable to charge a 24V system but the solar charge controller is probably compatible with quite high solar panel voltages and can still bring it back down to a suitable charging voltage for 12V systems.
      The unregulated solar panel output gets fed into a solar charge controller (in this instance, a high quality brand MPPT type (Maximum Power Point Tracking) one vs. a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) type that isn't as efficient) which then 'regulates' the incoming power from the panel(s) and converts the voltage using internal DC-DC converter circuitry (can often step-up as well as step-down voltages) to the chosen compatible voltage output (in their case it'd be 12V). It's possible that either that model can be configured to have 24V output or there's another model that's suited for 24V electrical systems.
      standards are hard to get away from as proven in that case. This is similar to the comments in the video about why a 24V panel is preferable over a 12V

    Around 4:00-4:10 in this video you say "...automatically opens (?) up a connection when it sees a charging voltage. When the alternator kicks in and starts charging the starter battery, the Cyrix opens (?) the connection and allows both batteries to charge" How can you simultaneously charge all batteries when you have "opened" a connection between the two (or three) batteries? I am not quite understanding this. Watching your video it appears you have a decent background in electrical and it's possible the term was just used wrong. Thanks for the tip on the Cyrix, as I plan to research it more.

    Great video mate. Really want to know what program/app your using at 5:30 to show the electrical diagram. The animation is especially helpful and since I'm an electronics geek myself, I'd love to use whatever this is too!
    One other thing - 'Sunrader' without an 'i'? Is this an English US spelling thing? Down here in Aus it'd be 'raider' as I imagine this is vikings inspired name? Raid the sun of as much energy as possible? Haha anyway, all the best for your channel ;)

    I really love our Victron charge controller as well. Do you think their battery monitor is worth the $200 price? Bummer about the battery company going out of business. I've always been curious about the Victron's lithium batteries with bluetooth. They seem legit.

      I absolutely think it's worth the price. It's only $30 more dollars to get the built in bluetooth version. I almost always checked on my phone rather than on the physical device. I also think compared to lesser battery monitors it's worth the price for the features like cutoffs, alarms, etc.

    You can kill your alternator with a direct spit charge relay - you need a DC to DC charger

    Why does use equate to damage of lead acid batteries in most peoples minds? Use it more than 50% and it's damaged. It would be like getting in your golf cart and driving half way round your golf course and walking the rest to stop the battery from being damaged. It's an excellent way to put people off golf but it's not true. Golf cart battery makers intend the battery to be deeply cycled, hence the name... deep cycle batteries not 50% cycle batteries. They last for 2 years if you discharge them by 90%, which is a good life for its purpose. We, in the solar fraternity, have learned that if you only discharge them to 50%, we will get about 4 years out of them. If we only discharge them by 20%, we will get 8 years life out of these batteries. They wear out!
    They wear out whether we use them or not. We don't damage them when we discharge them below 50%, we wear them out. The 50% figure is an economical balance point... it's based on battery life or number of cycles, if you must. Most people who use them, understand and accept this information. Somehow it has been turned around to mean that if you discharge them below 50%, you will damage them... you won't! You will however, wear them out more quickly... 4 years instead of 8 years. 50% of 8 is 4... 50% depth of discharge is 4 years... 50% is a reasonable life expectancy.
    Lithium chemistry batteries are expensive... NZ$4,000 for 12v 400a/h... lead acid are NZ$600 for 12v 400a/h. I'm not on NZs rich list so I use lead acid and put up with a few inconveniences associated with them and I don't repeat the urban myths that most people repeat... especially when they want to promote an expensive new technology.

    Lithium batteries have many plus points but the one negative that concerns me is when they fail its a fire that will totally destroy your rig , its not a simple fire to put out , so as much as everyone keeps pushing lithium batteries why arent you talking about the fire hazzards, like what to do ? What fire extinguisher to use ? And most important where not to store them ! Oh these batteries are great , till they overheat and catch fire then its all hell breaking loose , tell me im wrong , please , go watch how fast and hot the fire gets on failed lithium before you jump in head first , im on the fence with them , the positive parts are very inviting , but the negitives scare the hell out of me ,P.S. also its funny you mention the company who made your batteries is no longer around , hmmmm why ,,,,ya that says alot about lithium companies now dont it , who do you sue when shit fails ,,,,ya nobody

    While lithium is able to be discharged to 20%(meaning effectively nearly double usable capacity) it is still in 2020 more than twice the price for lithium. And that's for CHEAP lithium which almost definitely will not last as long as is claimed(already many tales of very early lithium failure)
    So unless you're spending big $$$$ on lithium then you may end up with a dead system and a big hole in your pocket from buying twice.
    Also panel efficiency means absolutely nothing. So what if one is 22 vs 18%. Panel output is panel output. 280w of any panel is 280w.

Like I know the couple seem 'woke' and all but that's the world we live in, takes all types, including you, an extremely impatient person who thinks the rest of the world is there to serve you! The funny thing is you actually spent more time commenting than watching which is a real shame because you wouldn't have seen the good electrical diagram at 5:30.
      Now as for the content and knowledge of the electrical in this video, you probably are best off watching another one because there is some finer points here which are overlooked and it's still best to actually discuss things with an Auto Electrician anyway but if you were going to do up your own video anyway, why the hell are you commenting on this fine couple's? Take a look in the mirror mate.
