@@TheAero1221 Yeah it’s a brilliant scene. I too am a huge fan of Thor - all 3 Thor movies. I love this scene - one of my favs. That quote is so powerful, only Anthony Hopkins could pull off a scene like that. I actually shrieked when Thor called Oden an old man and a fool. And Loki was like “aaaaaaaah…” Second awesome scene was in the café, when Jane challenged Thor for smashing the coffee cup . The look Thor gave Jane …. He clearly wasn’t accustomed to being told “no.” And that’s the moment he began to respect Jane.
It was also completely improvised by Sir Anthony Hopkins.

The growl was improv by Sir Anthony. He knows how to work a scene. It doesn't matter if it's high drama, or as Sir Anthony puts it 'a good popcorn film', his skill at the actor's craft is on display. My favorite from him is as the aging Don Diego dela Vega in The Mask of Zorro.

3:13 I love that moment of hesitation from Odin as if he's considering whether or not he should go through with his decision. It's ambiguous at the time the film came out, but after Ragnarok, I like to interpret it as Odin remebering what Hela became when her ambition was left unchecked and thus Odin decides to go through with exiling Thor in hopes he'll learn humility and the value of life rather than follow in his sister's footsteps.
I love that when you watch ragnarok you get this little call back and it makes it clear that in this moment Odin fears Thor will become another Hela
I feel that his moments hesitation isn’t because he is considering Hela and realising what he needs to do.
I think he’d made up his mind the moment thor started mouthing off.
No, I think that hesitation is him thinking and trying to figure out where he went wrong.
I also think it’s why he wanted to kill Loki in Dark World and had to be talked down by frigga.
He blames himself for his children’s failings and feels that he has to punish them as harshly as possible because to him, if he doesn’t, he’s failing them again. He clearly loves all of his children but he knows he can’t let them get away with this shit, so over does it on the punishment so it doesn’t look like he’s showing favouritism.
By the time it got to Loki he’s just realised he doesn’t know what he’s doing wrong or how to change.
The sad thing is, from everything we see he is as a decent parent.
Not perfect, but there are worse parents out there.
At the end of the day, he is not responsible for his children’s choices, they are.
And at the end of the day, all three of his children were assholes at some point. And two of them got better.
@@jackhutton5078 Well... that and the fact that Thor probably would end like a arrogant and spoiled king that would claim Asgard as superior and most powerful. Loke would be a dictator with placing himself as the center but Hela... she would be a tyrant even to Asgard herself.
The difference between the three is arrogance, narcisism and tyranny.
@@ptboxingagenda4536the way I see it is that Hela probably started off like Thor.
Remember, Thor was all for war, he went to Jotunheim LOOKING for a fight, seeking out war, revelling in bloodlust just like Hela did.
Loki wasn’t a narcissist at this point, he wanted approval, he killed is biological dad to try and impress Odin, they both were looking for war and conflict here but Thor wanted people to fear him like they feared Odin, and Loki wanted Odin to see him as worthy and figured that since he always favored Thor, that was the way to go.
The issue with all three of his children that I can tell is they all wanted to emulate their old man, but took his WORST qualities to emulate.
Hela wanted to emulate his bloodlust and violent nature.
Thor wanted to emulate the fear he inspired.
And Loki wanted to emulate his ruthlessness and cunning.
And all fell short.
The old god was more powerful than them all right to the end.
There’s a reason Thanos didn’t do shit until after Odin kicked the bucket.
Fun fact: Odin’s old for a reason.

You're not your
Not even just for the Thor movies, but how much he also changed in Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
And than those movies that came after, shite all over his character development.
Changed? He's a useless cameo in that awful Waititi spoof and exists only to spit poorly written exposition about ''Hela'' and then be gone. Also add to that the stupid reveal of him being bad in the past, which was never in the intention of Sir Kenneth Branagh. I wish if Branagh had done the proper Ragnarok movie with Odin as a central figure who will die in battle like he does in the myths and comics.
It may have been half by accident, but they really did a good job with his character development. He's so bitter and worn down in the second movie, but by the third he's found a better balance between responsibility and who he was in the beginning.

Anthony Hopkins is genuinely one of the best actors to have ever lived. He brings such life to the characters he plays, man. What a legend.
Those of us who are older were spoiled years ago, there were so many great actors at once. Stage actors, guys who were a little mad in their roles. Only now in this age of mediocrity can we appreciate them, imagine if the buffoon of a director of Thor Love and Thunder had casted one of his comic friends to play the role instead?
@@Parasmunt Yeah I would agree with that, but I wouldn't call it necessarily and 'age of mediocrity', there are plenty of fantastic actors in today's world I just think it's always easy to naturally take things for granted, in any and all aspects of life. Perhaps you are just being more observant my man.
I think he's one of those actors who often comes across as the same character, but he really shines when he's allowed to go all-out and put some emotion into the performance. I wish they'd give him more roles like this, but modern cinema tends to be understated. I mean he'll make you flinch through the screen all throughout this scene.

The first two Thor movies didn't get as good reception as others at the time. Many found Thor one-dimensional, bland and boring. With Ragnarok and L&T, at least he got more personality and character while also having serious and emotional moments with Odin's death, Gorr's Shadow Realm stuff, Jane's cancer and death, etc.
@@justlivinglife5609 I like that revisionist history that Waititi fans have to to pull off, pretending like Thor 1 wasn't the first successful MCU solo film outside of IM movies and wasn't integral to The Avengers. If anything, Cap before TWS was the character people didn't have care for. With Ragnajoke and Dumb and Thunder, Thor didn't receive any personality. He was turned into every boring goofball stock MCU character, who forgot everything he learned, and started to talk like he's on SNL That's not ''personality''; that's character assassination. There was nothing serious or emotion about Waititi's piss-poor comedies; they were emotionless, shallow cacophonies of bad humor and nonsense. Also, Dumb and Thunder is now on its way to becoming a modern day equivalent of Batman and Robin. So clearly making Thor into a comedian didn't pay off; it made everything worse and there is no going back.

I just love the fact these two juggernauts respect the rules of war. The moment Odin comes in Laufey approaches him immediately to talk diplomacy and rules of war and Laufey doesn’t attack Odin until he accepts his declaration of war. Laufey almost seems worried about Odin saying he looks stressed, but basically tells Odin that even if Laufey didn’t want to go to war he basically has too because Thors actions was an act of war.
Let’s be real. What Thor did was basically a terrorist attack. You have to go to war after that.
In the original interpretation of the script, however, Laufey here is portrayed as more pragmatic. He only attempts to attack upon witnessing the aged and weary aspect of the Allfather during the confrontation, yet Odin still manages to fend him off.
From this perspective, the scene can be understood as follows: the two kings silently assess each other during their conversation and standoff, weighing the costs and opportunities of war. Once determined, they strike like hunters. The narration describes Laufey's mental activity, but Odin is equally vigilant, with actions that are quicker and more powerful.
LOL what US-American nonsense. Terrorist attack -> you have to go to war. LOL Only US-Americans have this way of retarded thinking. That is how the USA have destabilised and are still destabilising the world. It was completely wrong to go to war after the 11th of September 2001.
Learning curve: negative slope.
The best way to react to a terrorist attack is to do nothing. Instead, strengthen civil society, improve social welfare, upkeep liberties. Simply retain the European-Westerm way of life. Snd of course invest in police and threat defense to improve safety. That's it.

“Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor”
Delivered to absolute perfection by Sir Hopkins.
I have a doubt.. every one is saying this is the moment when Odin casts a spell of worthiness on mjolnir.. but i believe that before this scene also one who is worthy can only lift the hammer. And Odin gives the spell as one who is worthy shall posses the power of Thor, that only gives the power of Thor to someone who is worthy not someone who is worthy can only lift mjolnir.
Everything that happens on the surface happens between a king and his subject/heir, everything else between a father and his son. He sent Mjolnir down with every hope that his son would learn, despite his anger and disappointment.
If not, then Asgard would gain a new hero...
My folk always ask me so damn many things about the whole marvel universe especially this one. In the endgame when Iron Man, Captain America & Thor kicking thanos ass when the scene Cap lift the mjolnir, they ask me how did cap wield it? My answer is remember the first thor movie? then they replied "Yes we do" okay go to the scene when odin kick thor in earth and you will know the answer of that
and here comes the question, is miss jane foster worthy of holding mjolnir or the fact that she had an infinity stone inside her helped her in some way?
Thanos ain’t no damn fool.
He was smart enough to start collecting the infinity stones AFTER people like the Ancient One, Odin, Hela, Surtur, Ego, and Dormammu were out of the picture.
All of them can easily wreck Thanos' plan.

Odin was definitely getting PTSD flashbacks to Hela
No, he wasn't, because she didn't exist as a character at this point. She was a random addition to the third one and had zero planning beforehand. That's why all of her backstory is contrived and dumped in exposition.
@@antona.1327 how do you know that, just bc something comes out last doesn´t mean it wasn´t planed in the first place. I am not saying Hela existed since the beggining, but they make the concept of her so that it could make moments like this better and it is still valid.
@@antonellaromero_upc1564 I know it because: A) It says on Wikipedia page for Thor Ragnarok that Hela was chosen at random for the third movie and the screenwriter wasn't even sure if it to make her Odin's daughter. B) One of the screenwriters on the first movie was J. Michael Straczynski, who was also a writer on Thor's comics. So he definitely wouldn't allude to Hela being Odin's daughter because he himself wrote stories with Thor where she's accurately depicted as Loki's daughter.
@@antona.1327 You lost me when you said wikipedia.
@@antonellaromero_upc1564 I like to think thats good writing takes existing content then enhances it upon repeated viewing. Like how in Star Wars you can tell they didn't intend Vader to be Luke's father. In fact last I recall it was intended to be a single film. However, the little flesing out with Vader in Ep 5 worked kinda nicely. Vader requests to turn Luke rather than execute him is played with subtlety. Since till that Point Vader was basically a thug who killed folks be it rebels or imperial if they failed enough, he flat out chokes an officer in a meeting until Tarkin stops him. So really Vader has no qualms taking lives. He has no reason to spare Luke unless he knew Luke is his son and that part of Anakin still wants the chance to be with his family. That sort of stuff is always fun with writing where you can expand upon something.
So the idea here is Odin was worried Thor would be like him, a warmonger, but then Ragnarok comes out and it adds that Odin is worried Thor would be like him, a warmonger, or worse like Hela and be this chaotic force of death. It enhances Odin's character beyond the plot setter for Thor to prove his worthiness to now be a concerned father who already failed his daughter and is frightened he is repeating that failure with his son.
Just a nice piece of writing. :)

Great moment. A lot was said with that single roar. Acknowledging how conniving Loki is and has been. And may well have played a part in Thor's current behaviour. (Which he did). And whatever Loki was about to say would likely be only to manipulate the situation further.
Something about this scene brings tears.... as a man, imagine hearing from your father those words. Very powerful scene.

Also shows why Thanos never made a move for all infinity stones until Odin was gone.
Odin before the odin sleep was an absolute beast and one of the strongest beings in the MCU. He defeated Prime Surtur and reduced him to the size we see at the beginning of Ragnarok he conquered all of the nine realms along with Hela he imprisoned Hela and he easily took away Thor's power. I found Thor to be fairly entertaining as a whole, but this scene shows how much of a Master Anthony Hopkins can be. He completely controls this scene.
Thor thinks his father a coward and an old man, and Odin responds with such force that he reduces a previously arrogant Thor to a whimpering ten year-old. Just look at the mix of fear and dIsbelief on Thor’s face when Odin comes down on him.
I could only imagine the silence and awe on-set the day that Hopkins filmed this scene. The true greats tend to get that reaction from their audience, whether it be in-person or on-screen.
