In this video I give an introduction to retaining wall design. I go over some of the basics you'll need to know before you get started, I give you a refresher on the relevant geotechnical parameters, then I go through the 3 global stability checks and how to find the design actions in the wall, and finally, at the end of the video I show a resource I made that summarises all this information as well as an excel spreadsheet that automates all of these calculations. Enjoy :)

WHO AM I:
I’m Ben, a graduate structural engineer. I make videos about tech, engineering, productivity and self-development. On this channel I hope to provide entertainment, advice and knowledge for aspiring and young students and professionals.
Easy, simple, clean. Top quality and clear, concise steps. Recommending your videos to some of the junior members in my team!
Thank you!!
This is a great refresher of concepts, saved for future use. Thank you :)
your videos are very helpful Ben. Thanks!!
Thank you!
wow your teaching skill is awsome, waitinf for your steel structure
Thank you!
Great video and resources, Ben. Thank you very much, these will also be handy for my new career in structural
engineering.
Thank you and for sure!!
Nice video man, needed to do one of these about two weeks ago and coding it up in MathCad was actual cancer. Credits to you for making a fully functional excel sheet!
Oh no haha! Thank you :)
Honestly, this is extremely educative and deserve so much more views. Wish you the best of luck
Thank you!
Thanks Ben. This is amazing stuff. Well done.
Thank you!
yesss, a new video while reviewing for my upcoming prelim exams
Hope you enjoyed it and good luck!
It was very helpful, thanks man.
That’s great to hear, thanks!
We have already studied theory in class,it would have been better if you teached us how to model and design this on software
If you’ve got access to software that does the design for you, often inputting and setting it up is pretty self explanatory. I think understanding the theory and underlying concepts is what most beginners need first :)
I am a graduate civil engineer and want to become structure designer
Your videos are great
Can you please make a video on books for structure design for beginners for self learning
Thank you! Yes I might make a video like this in future, thanks for the suggestion :)
Ben, you are an amazing teacher. When are you heading to graduate school, because teaching civil engineering to the next generation is your passion
Thanks! That’s very nice of you to say :)
Woww what a great video idea! Might be very useful for my new job!!
Thank you! A lot of effort went into this one so that’s really great to hear. Yes I think so :)
Your videos are quite educative. Kindly do one for Reinforced concrete structures 🙏
I have made a guide/excel sheet on reinforced concrete that is available already but perhaps I will make another video on this. Thanks!
Awesome!!
Thanks!
Awesome ,can you do one for steel structures too, thanks
Hey BEng hielscher I just discovered your channel and it's been really helpful, and I really like the simplicity in ur explanation. I just wanted to know what softwares you used to make the diagrams in your notes?
Hey Ben,
Your videos are becoming more and more educational.
Wishing you 100k subscribers this year.
Thank you!!
Good day. This a very informative video but what softwares will you advice for someone who's just getting started with structural design
It is better understanding Presure prisom volume
This is great 😊 although I think you missed out on seismic forces which typically governs. Does your excel sheet include earthquake forces? 😮
Is it possible to get the notes only without the spreadsheet?
Prokon is easy and optimise design
Thank you for such a detailed explanation! So in theory this is same principle one could follow to design the walls of an in-ground swimming pool? I suppose the water pressure would work in our favor but we need to calculate for the worst case scenario, i.e. an empty pool.
My pleasure! Yes, the same theory applies* and you are correct, the worst case for an in-ground pool is when it’s empty.
*If you have a long pool where you could consider the wall to be bending one way (cantilever action) then all the same design procedures would be similar to a cantilever retaining wall. However for short pools, the bending in the walls is two ways so considering the bending in these cases to be one way will result in a very uneconomical design.
@@BEngHielscher Thank you Ben! Could you clarify what you mean by two ways bending in short pools? I understand that the wall deflection on a short pool would be limited by the other perpendicular walls close to it, working like a membrane. Is this what you are referring to?
I mean that rather than the wall just acting like a cantilever, it would also bend between the two perpendicular walls
May i ask how long and how many do you design structure in a single day? I'm planning to be a structural design engineer but i'm worried that I won't be able to pursue it due to my hand & wrist health problem.
Are calculations according to eurocodes?
You could adjust the load factors used in the spreadsheet to suit eurocodes :)
hello engr
iam a 7 years experience in structure design in Dubai and i am willing to migrate to australia, so shall you recommend fpr me a course to adapt to australian market so i will be ready to work in my current job?
Hi you are going to sell this excel file $49 but $49 is Max in India we cannot afford this. We like all your videos and subscribe, we do everything but this money is a lot in India, in return you can provide it for free or for less money if you want.Because I have no knowledge and you explained it very well to me I watch all your videos and learn from them, I just request you to give me the files for free. 🎉
I could have swore you labelled this as “for beginners”. I gave absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.
Unique and helpful content.. all the best 🤎.
Thank you very much!
