555 timers, IR LEDs and Remote control IR receivers

555 timers, or other oscillator mechanisms are a great way to offload mundane modulation tasks away from the actual microcontrollers for embedded applications. This is how the remotes do it. You can run these in a room full of incandescent bulbs, or even in the sun.

It's just a 555 timer being used as an astable oscillator. Pick the R and C values to give you a frequency of 56 KHz (or whatever modulation frequency the IR receiver expects).
