"It's like an Artie-Dooty."
Oh, Mary. It's about as far from an Artie-Dooty as one can get.
Does she still that's his real name?
I don’t know about that. R2 is a foul mouthed savage with some serious tude.
True.
More like Chopper from Rebels tbf.
The Daleks now possess the largest collection of cute cat pictures in existence.
The Daleks are the ones who taught me that all it takes is good writing to turn creatures made with low-budget effects into terrifying adversaries.
There was a running joke in the fandom about Daleks being defeated by stairs, as all their architecture has ramps. Also a lot of jokes about whether the plunger was useful for anything. This dealt with both of these brilliantly.
A dalek levitated in classic who
@@benjames9158At least three times. The first time was in a story from 1965 where a Dalek levitates up through a pile of sand (the sand helping to hide how it was really being raised).
The other two times were in the mid 1980s with a Dalek actually chasing the Doctor's companion up a flight of stairs, like in this episode, in the second of those stories.
“Real Daleks don’t climb stairs… they level the building “
Tom Baker taunted them in an episode for this. Seem like the kind of thing Douglas Adams would have written.
I think in the Christopher Lee movies they could fly, but can't recall exactly.
The Daleks first appeared on-screen in 1963 they were based on the german nazis trom World War II and are one of the Doctor's most oldest and deadliest enemies and one of the most iconic things of science fiction.
The Daleks going on stairs was an ongoing joke for years until 1988 when they were finally capable of flight on stairs.
Even before that, really. In The Chase, they are shown at the bottom of a stairway, then cut to them at the top. The only time the stair thing was valid was in their first appearance.
They could plunge a man to death at 30 metres! 🪠🪠
@@johnmcclure40 The Daleks had quite limited mobility in their first appearance overall, they couldn't leave the Dalek city because their mini-tank shells drew power from the metal floors to function. One of the biggest shocks in the early years of the show was from their second appearance in The Dalek Invasion of Earth where they've worked out a way to keep themselves powered on any terrain, and even the first one you see in that story shows that they have submersible capabilities, marking their first big leap in mobility to make them more threatening.
Thank you and I wish they would stop the fraud of restarting the count with season one with new Doctors, the reboots really have ruined the show at this point. Disney will do to Who, what they did to Star Wokes.
@@charlesmaurer6214 Try convincing someone to start watching a show at Season 27, or season 40. It's a good thing they reset the numbering every so often.
This is why Eccleston's Doctor was so great, I won't spoil it, but the way he reveals the Doctors history from basically nothing makes it work so well to bridge the gap from the end of the original series.
He plays it so well like someone who has been through the experiences which fit in with the Whoniverse.
Van Statten looks more and more like a fictionalized Elon Musk with every passing day.
Except Musk is less mature and even more selfish
This episode hits on two great levels…
New fans of the franchise are more like Rose, curious, open minded, and not aware of the history between The Doctor and the Daleks…
Old time Classic Whovians go through the following stages…
1; suspicion when we see the blue eyestalk light and it’s vaguely familiar shape…
2; utter terror when the ‘ear-lights’ illuminate and we hear the raspy Dalek voice say “DOC-TOR…?” And we realize The DALEKS ARE BACK!…
Another bit of trivia, the Dalek ‘travel machine’ chassis sensors read the *exact* power level to instantly exterminate its target… the Dalek creature inside then *REDUCES THE POWER LEVEL* of the weapon by 20% to prolong the agony of the target.
I always think Christopher E. doesn't get enough credit for his role. The BCC took a chance on a show that hadn't aired for 15 years and it very easily could have flopped. The writing helped too :-)
"It's like an Artie Duty!"
Yes, and later on he sets free.
Becoming an Artie Duty Free.
The entire internet in 2012? 2012 was the year of Overly Attached Girlfriend, Gangnam Style, & Grumpy Cat. No wonder the Dalek changed its mind about hating everything.
7:13 The Daleks captured and became a permanent part of British culture because their earliest stories were written as direct metaphors for World War II Germany: the fear of The Blitz, the fear of invasion upon the British Isles having seen what happened to the Continent, the Holocaust and the heroic struggle against a monolithic enemy.. Ihe first two stories came out less than 20 years after WWII and especially the second one "The Dalek Invasion of Earth" with scenes of Daleks rolling up and down the actual bridges of the London's Thames River and the old Battersea Power Station
Back in 1963 when the Darleks first appeared they terrified every kid in the UK. The show went from almost being cancelled to the highest rated kids kids show in one word Exterminate . . .
"Would you like a cup of tea" You don't know how accurately you predicted an entire future episode lol
That was where the sound clip came from
Hold on, I'm missing something... which episode are we talking about?
@theeditor8376 Every piece of British media in perpetuity.
@theeditor8376series 5 episode 3

Doctor who: its a dalek
Mary: its a blue noodle
This first season of Doctor Who (along with parts of the next 2-3 seasons) contained *lots* of Easter Eggs for fans of Classic Who, presented in such a way as to be intriguing and exciting for newbies. Fans of Classic Who had seen the Daleks dozens of times before this, in many different contexts, and were utterly terrified of them. So the first time we see the Dalek in this episode, old fans were saying, "Oh J*s*s!" (Similarly, in the second episode, when the Tree recognized what the Doctor was by observing his body chemistry & biology, and then, based *only* on that, told him, "I'm so sorry," our (the old fans') hearts sank, because we knew it could only mean that the Time Lords were gone.)
cant wait for the empty child episode - still one of my favs
First properly GREAT episode of the show
3:44 EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! (God I missed hearing that!)
WHEE! CLASSIC WHO RETURNS! The Daleks were THE BAD ASSES of the old Doctor Who show as the most often appearing villains. The first episode Rose introduced another classic villain, The Nestine Consciousness, but they are small potatoes in the Whoniverse.
Your editing is so on point and funny...I cried laughing at "So much porn!' lolol
Excellent episode. This was actually the first episode of any Doctor Who I ever saw, and it hooked me.
You can find the episodes for Genesis of the Daleks. Although the Daleks first appear in season one in 1963, it isn’t until 1975 that they get a backstory. And, it’s dark.
It was done on a very limited budget and to 1970s television standards, but it isn’t bad.
This has to be the best reactor-show combination. I'm really enjoying these!
Two things about this episode. The biggest joke from the original series was that you would be safe from a Dalek if you went up some stairs, not any more!!!!!! (Hides behind sofa). The second is when the Dalek tells the Doctor that he would make a good Dalek! Truly chilling! Great reaction Mary.
For those familiar with Classic Doctor Who, it’s a bit of an “oh shit!” moment when the dalek first starts speaking.
To be fair though, the title gives it away.
"I just watched so something scary"
And you follow it up with Daleks? The scariest thing ever??
Wait until Mary sees "Blink".
Daleks debuted in late 1963 on the show's second ever serial, and are easily the most iconic villains in the history of Doctor Who. The 1975 Fourth Doctor story Genesis of the Daleks shows the story of their creation, though the Second Doctor stories The Power of the Daleks and The Evil of the Daleks from 1966 and 1967 remain the most gripping and well written Dalek stories in the show's history for me; the latter in particular gets a particular echo early on in the new series. As always, gonna continue holding out for Mary's classic series journey to happen eventually!
20:56 the beauty of (near unrestricted) time travel - you can go anywhere and look the same as you do in the present day.
The first episode of this series literally showed up on my recommended and I just finished watching all the other episodes, I wasn’t expecting another episode to get uploaded today
Very fun to re-watch this with you.
The images of the Doctor throughout history in the first episode happen because he's a time traveller
Doctor Who!
5:49 yes you see Daleks are a recurring Doctor Who enemy with them first appearing and one of the earliest shows.
The script of the first episode does sort of try to subtly address the point you raise, by Clive saying "The title seems to have been passed down from father to son, it appears to be an inheritance. That's *your* Doctor there, isn't it?" suggesting he has photos of other people called 'The Doctor' in his collection, but is just showing her the ones of the face she'll recognize. The novelisation of the first episode by describing some of those photos, including previous Doctors, one that had been on screen between the episode and the publication of the book, and even ones we've still never seen... yet.
3:05 Canoodling and snogging are pretty much the same thing.
I'd forgotten a lot of t his episode. Now I need to watch it again.
3:41 yes! I missed hearing you say that
10:57 well done unicorn rainbow
12:14 I liked the editing choice of the camera movements with your sound effects
13:10 lol
17:19 rose has such a great line
Enjoyed your reaction as usual.
Remember in the first episode when the Doctor leaves, then comes back and says, "Oh did I mention? It also travels in time." I like to think he went off and had a few adventures on his own before he thought to come back and say that and that's how those photos exist. Otherwise things wouldn't make much sense to me as he seems pretty fresh out the oven when we first meet him so to speak.
That's what I thought, too.
But it's wrong.
The Doctor had those adventures *BEFORE* meeting Rose.
He broke all the mirrors in the TARDIS after the regeneration, because he didn't want to think about who he was and what had happened.
That's why the first time he sees himself in a mirror is at Jackie's apartment.
I will never get tired of hearing her say artee-dootee. Honestly just makes me smile every time.
really enjoyed your reaction, thank you 👍☺
Introduction of Dalek race in New Doctor who was brilliant.
I love Eccleston's doctor all the time, but he really knocks it out of the park in this episode. The pure hatred and venom that drips off every word he says to the Dalek is incredible.
As you have heard the Daleks are the classic Doctor Who enemy. When they first appeared in the 60s they became almost as popular as the Doctor. I am so looking forward to all the adventures ahead and your reaction to them.
The Daleks are the oldest and most popular recurring race/villains in Doctor Who. They date back to some of the earliest episodes from the 60s, and except for small modifications, their design has remained largely unchanged over the years.
That said, the Dalek in this episode is SERIOUSLY over-powered compared to the Daleks in the classic episodes. As far as I can recall, they never had a shield, couldn't magically repair themselves, and weren't super-geniuses. In fact, I recall one episode where a Dalek was destroyed simply by pushing it out a second floor opening onto some concrete.
In the 80s, there was a small, traveling Doctor Who exhibit that toured the United States. It came to a town near me and I was lucky enough to go see it. It was basically a trailer full of props and costumes from the show. They had one of the classic Daleks in a glass case. They may not look it on the show, but they're quite big and imposing in person.
This episode was oddly prophetic 😮
Unfortunately Mary has missed out on decades of history between the Doctor and the Daleks
Honestly this episode makes up for that quite well in my opinion.
Eh this episode is designed to not require it. The Classic stuff isn't really relevant as it's focused on the time war invented in the new series, so you don't really need a deep dive.
7:03 if you think that’s cool I recommend you watch the fourth Doctor Who because that actually has an episode where the doctor goes back in time and sees their version of Genesis where are you get to see their creator and their home planet.
Thank you, Mary! ⏳
Wish they would stop listing the reboot as season or series one. IT IS NOT that was in B&W through the first 2 doctors and they had more class.
So to modernized the daleks they made the plunger from 1963 be more deadly. They also removed the stairs as an obstacle until the 90s any may people did not know they could levitate
R T Dooty 😂
For me this is the best Dr in the best episode.
Eccleston uses his classical theatre skills to show a heretofore unseen side of the Dr - an individual who committed genocide trying to save his people and how that affected him. The sheer hate and rage he displays is in stark contrast to the happy, skippy and often silly aspects of the character displayed before and (mostly) since.
Hi mary, glad you are enjoying doctor who. I am curious as to what episode you are up to on patreon?
A brilliant series 1 episode that really captures the menace of the Daleks, unlike some of the stories they feature in later. It does have that massive self-destruct plot hole, but it's not hard to dismiss. Chris is absolutely incredible in this one!
The cameo by Blue Thunder (the helicopter) does yank me out of the episode, but it doesn't usually last long.
That porn comment! 🤣
Spoilers!
If Mary thinks that the Dalek's thing is little, she's been spoilt.
Canoodling is an old fashioned work for kissing.
The biggest of the Big bads. Since 1964...
LONG LIVE ARTY-DOOTY!!! 💜
The "So much porn!" is kind of true, the original scipt talks about the Dalek having read Buffy the Vampire Slayer fanfiction after absorbing the Internet.
Doctor and the Daleks are like Batman and Joker.
4:33 "thats kinda mean"
I mean the Daleks are basically space nazis 😅
Canoodling is cuddling
R2d2 was inspired by the dalek design
Canoodling is sort of being physically romantic, but not to the point of taking clothes off or having sex. Like beneath a tree in a park, far away from other people but still possibly in sight, you might canoodle in public. Cuddle up against each other, kiss, kiss their neck or face, stroke non-sexual areas over their clothing, like their back or arm.
This episode is both scary and sad. It’s very good the way it shows The Doctor, generally a Good Guy, be full of hate to a person of a different race his race fought to the death with.
It’s a somber and wide ranging topic of huge interest and critical need to learn from. Critical need to navigate all the ethical and philosophical nuances correctly. It brings up both the Paradox Of Tolerance (Dalek’s intolerant impulse to genocide cannot be tolerated, and every measure minimally needed to stop them must be taken), and the very dangerous ethical erosion that fighting even a Just fight or war can have on you. The Doctor IS like the Dalek, because the only emotion he can feel for them is hate.
In an age where most MAGA people don’t realise their leaders are taking them and the USA full NAZI-Christo-Facist-Dictatorship, that mindset and MAGA/Project 2025 political power structure has to be exterminated (word used deliberately) without us becoming as hateful and intolerant as them.
I think you might have been trying to remember Bad Wolf?
This is a really good episode.
more Doctor Who !!!! more more
Four fun episodes to warm up, Time to get serious,
Before Mary is hoping for something light. :)
Ahhhh, the Daleks, beings who would descrbe the 3rd Reich as "A bit too wishy-washy and liberal."
Oh look, Doctor Who predicted Elon Musk. We can only hope Leon ends up the same way.
16:02 :D
"The ultimate racial cleansing" fun fact in classic who the Daleks were actually somewhat compared to Hitler not really their first appearance, but a bit later on, there is a famous picture of some daleks raising their hands? Plungers? Up in the air, yes, the exact way ur thinking of
Well, yes, from the beginning. They were unambiguously created as an allegory. It was only 18 years after the end of the war, and their obsession with racial purity was there from day one. They wanted to kill all of the Thals because of (as Ian said) "an intense dislike of the unlike." They were always big on killing people that weren't "pure." They were sci-fi versions of the ideology most of the people involved in production had actively fought against.
Compared to? They were _based on_ them, the ultimate Facists hating and destroying everthing that was not Dalek. Even their way of chanting "Exterminate! Exterminate!" was intended to be reminicent of "Seig heil!"
Evil, merciless, murderous, psychotic and pitiless - all words discarded as being far too mild to apply to a Dalek.
15:24 Well, I don't know about "regenerate"....
Issues with the volume, very low Who volume.
Are you my mommy ?
Please continue with The Star Treks. 🖖
0:19 oh, umm. I'm sorry to say this really isn't the right episode to be watching. 🫣😅🫣
