This is a quick summary of how I built a DIY queen bed frame with storage for my guest bedroom. This DIY project can be built with very few tools and is an easy way to add storage in an otherwise wasted space in the bedroom.
So i have been watching this crafting and woodworks for 2 days now... and this is the first time i am seeing a woman build .. Its amazing and beautiful !! bravo young lady
Tsar Pushkin. can we just talk about your profile. pic .......beautiful
I worked with a woman craftperson eleven years ago & she had the same skill as any other craftperson in the shop & was the go to finisher for all projects.
Very nicely done young lady! Also, when u lift the mattress u have a secret storage (on the other side of the by the wall).
I built one of these for a XL Twin, it was satisfying finishing something like this. I added a sheet to the bottom to enclose the frame because I have dust bunnies. This is what added the great deal of extra weight but rest assured the frame will never move unless it is physically picked up. I made my drawers as long as i could and that worked out great.
This was worth every bit of the plans cost.
Nice project. I like that the Leesa company will donate a bed for every 10 they sell. I'm gonna order a couple for my house. Thx for getting the word out there. I believe in supporting those companies who give back.
good man 👍
After about 9 months of on again off again building, my daughter is now sleeping in a bed I built from watching this video 1000 times and the plans you put out there. Still need to finish the drawers but she loves it.
I maybe shouldn’t have picked this as my very first woodworking project, but I learned a ton. Thank you so much!
There's so much time and effort that goes into making something like this. Great video April!!
: ) Thank you!
Nice, I did mine 30 yrs ago but in 3 boxes with 1 big drawer each side and attached them together with a frame like a waterbed. It made it real easy to disassemble when moving. I did not have many tools and made it on the back porch. There are some things I would do different but it works great. Then I got married and a bigger mattress, so I ran the saw up the middle making 6 boxes and resized the frame. Redoing the headboard later this summer to install some concealed features.
good project. but i think its too high if we have a baby. but the storage is pretty usefull. inspiring!
I had a thick piece of foam in my 11 foot camper years ago. It was queen size and several people told me that a foam mattress would make me sweat but once I put a comforter under the bottom sheet it was a very comfy bed..You did a great job on this project April.
What could possibly possess the minds of 300+ people to dislike this video? Were they jealous that they were too inept to do the project? What flaws did they see that made them vote a thumbs down verdict? I didn't see any negative comments below so I'm kind of bewildered as to why some people didn't like it. I'm no wood worker but this project looked simple enough for even me to do. It's not like April claimed that this was the best way to do the project, she did it the best that she could using the considerable skills that she'd developed over the years. And it looked like it would easily last 25 or more years. I give her and the project a thumbs up -- WAY UP!
It might have something to do with the functionality of the frame. it is a well known fact that mattresses of any kind need air circulation below, otherwise they will mold and promote bacteria growth. An upgrade to this project might be for example another box on top of that one with 2x4s ribs allowing for air to circulate and moisture to escape.
or some blocks as feet under the base to raise it slightly off the floor and cut out holes in the top of the base using a hole saw. Same result without adding too much height. Awesome job all the same, well done young lady.
metaspherz It's because at the end of the video one drawer on the bed was missing a handle, no other explanation it just pushed people's OCD but I let it slide personally haha
Did you ever find any video on youtube with so many views with zero dislikes, for you to overreact this way?
Miss Wilkerson. I am really jealous on you because you are so habile. I´m a wood worker (beginner) and I can´t make still great jobs like you do. This one is especially beautiful. Thank you very much for shearing your knowledge. You are a wise person.
Proud of you April....... I have built my fair share of woodwork and you do very well. I love watching you. I could picture a daughter of mine being like you. Love the way you say "Saw." Good job!
Your videos could be twice as long and still be just as interesting and useful.
Really great project! Does make for a really big object to maneuver through the house. I addressed that by making the whole thing as an assembly of 3 cabinet carcasses. Their joining can easily be hidden with the trim work you do on what you call the "footer." Also, you can put the whole thing on a ~2.5-3" plinth that has a smaller footprint, to allow a toe space around the bed. Cheers! keep making super content like this.
You must have stock in the Kreg company for the amount of pocket screws you use in any given project. ;)
I did learn something new in this video. There is another mattress company that ships via the mail other than Casper. Choice is always good for the consumer.
Pretty good. My daughter really needs something like this. Her stuff keeps growing. Maybe a project for the both of us.
Put a flippin mask on, the most important thing in the workshop is you so take care of your safety first, oh yeh, Very nice build april, your getting better and more confident with every build, why not try those routers and make some dovetailed furniture. Take care, atb, simon.
Love it April I think I will try and make one for my son. I am a 60 year old man and just starting in woodworking. so ty for the ideas ...
i'm never gonna do this, but it was fascinating to watch
Aryeh M haha same😂
Obi Khan Kenobi manualidades
Why are you here?
Aryeh M see nice very good
same thought but it is nice
It's beautiful! I'm building one now, but I am using an old dresser that I cut down because I doubted my abilities to make the drawers and have them fit. I should have watched this first!
Nice work!! well done
jimmydiresta Damn, April gets praise from Mr. Diresta? She must be as good as I thoguht she was. Ha
: ) Thanks Jimmy
Girl you bad to the bones, awesome work!. I Love seeing women doing these kinds of project, showing our skills. I just currently made my son's entire living room suite out of 2x4's. Starting on his bedroom soon. Thanks for posting and showing us how to do it, you are wonderful!
Nice build, I bet that was fun get that in the house.
: ) Fun for me. I just got the door and watched Cody and our buddy do all the heavy lifting.
Yet another exceptionally beautiful build project with superior Craftsmanship! Well done, April!
Fellas stop with all the comments on April's looks and stature. You don't comment on guys. It's sexist, not called for and bad form. April puts herself out there as someone who is learning new skills, and does a bloody good job of it. She obviously does a hell of a lot of research because she knows the names of all the joints, cuts and angles, good on you April. Guys stop with the misogyny and stop feeling inadequate, it's not the 50's and the woman has to have the meal on the table at the same time every night. April is a very creative, innovative young lady that has made a business out of nothing. I salute you April!!! Keep up the good work. Cheers, Sean
Your making a huge generalization on males who view this channel. The 1% who are vocal in the comment section are not indicative of how most of us act.

The MeTooMovement# ToxicMasculinity# Is this the best a man can get? Is it? We can't hide from it. It's been going on far too long. We can't laugh it off. Making the same old excuses. But something finally changed. And there will no going back. Because we believe in the best of men. To say the right thing. To act the right way. Some already are. In ways big and small. But some, is not enough. Because the boys watching today, will be the men of tomorrow!
April you rock! I am in the process of building my own kitchen cabinets and countertops, but I am now going to build a bed with drawers just like you did. Both the bed and you are awesome.
Nice job April!
I like it. When I worked with a cabinet / furniture craftman, we put in desks & cabinets for a in home office.
The home owner wanted a spare bed in the office, but hidden from client view. So we made a tall cabinet with double doors on the bottom of a murphy bed.
The double door were fake, just glued to a sheet of plywood, after building it, I could not tell it was fake doors, under a bed that stood up right.
instead of draws on the wall side I would think a door or two along the foot side would allow you to store longer stuff (hockey stick, rifles ) but other than that killer set up
The framing she did for the drawers went all the way from side to side. If she ran a piece down the middle and terminated the drawer supports at it then it would allow access to the full length of the bed.
Rifles? You crazy americans.... Use a damn weapons locker.
@@cookiemonsterdayz It was just an example,at your age not your shoe size.
Articulate, skilled, creative, generous to share. You've passed on the blessing to us. Thanks!

Your work shop is amazing. I just built my own bed a few weeks back, all hand tools. Was a massive work out.
Hello April firstly i like the bed and how it looks, since we are in 2016 now how is the durability coping so far with it?Any squeaks or shaking as yet?
I made this bed frame in fall of 2018 and my now ex-wife and I used it until summer of 2022 and it held up rather well. Although, after a few months, she did have a few complaints. She wished the drawers were a bit bigger, she didn't like that there wasn't a way to store things under the bed, and she didn't like how tall the bed was (she's only 5'1"). When she and I bought our house, we upgraded to a king sized bed and so I ended up selling it.
Very nice! I love your videos. When I built my queen bed frame, it sits in the corner too, so for the end I made 2 doors that can be opened for storage underneath.
Wow, that's really gorgeous. And cute dogs! :D
I have a passion for carpentry but never had the chance to work in it.
I enjoy so much watching your work 👍
Thank you for posting, I'm in the process of gathering materials to make this. I am super curious...what is the reason for using cabinet grade plywood? Does it make a substantial difference? Thank so much!
Well if you plan to stain it like I did then the cabinet grade will drastically effect how nice it looks. Cabinet grade is sanded but it also doesn't have any knots in the wood. Whereas you can buy construction grade that is sanded but there are still plenty of blemishes and also knots. Also, typically cabinet grade plywood has more plywood layers, making it stronger.
If you want to paint your frame then sanded construction grade will work great however, at my big box store the price difference between these two is only about 50 cents. So you might as well go with the higher quality. Good luck with the build and send me photos after you get it done! : ) I have plans on my site btw, if you need them.
I really appreciate the information, I have the plans and will send photos when completed!
I love how proud you look at your finished products. There is no better feeling than being able to make your own functional furniture. And it is a refreshing change to see a female showing us how to do it.I have always advocated that women have the same tools as men to do what is presumably a mans job.A brain and two hands is all that is necessary. And most importantly a love of creating. What impresses me more about you,is that you are so young, but have a old head on your shoulders.A very rare thing these days.I bet your family are very proud of you.
how much did this cost you in materials?
so far with the plan i bought from her about 429 at home depot
You actually are the second lady building watching you guys makes me want to build since I'm a fashion designer I don't think will be hard cause both things fashion designer and building is all about measuring.
What kind of plywood is that and what size? Did you use 3/4 or 1 inch thick? And what thickness were the drawers?
I have plans on my website if you are interested in building one.
April Wilkerson u are hot

omg 😍
I want your garage and all your tools!!!!! :) lol.... I used to do crafty wood working and always wanted to branch out and do stuff like this but then I started having babies :) and never got back to it. Great to see a woman who knows her stuff!!!! Hat's off to you and you have an awesome teaching video!! Thanks!!
You rock!👍
I like how you're editing gets right to the point of your projects....wish I had your talents
what happend to the lower left drawer? or handle in back-order?
I like watching your videos, because you show the planning of each section of the building. You are a great teacher and look forward to seeing another great video
April only I can say about you Awesome Amazing lady Wooo
I've designed a bed for friends of mine and wondered what size ply I should use. Thanks for giving me the idea..
Love she's a girl doing this
Love the idea of using hot glue to hold the drawer fronts in place... I'll be stealing that one. Really nice bed frame unit. My wife, Elise and I have a dresser in our room with much the same layout. I stacked the drawer units from a water bed we were getting rid of and added legs and installed a top. It has served us well for more than 20 years. Fits perfectly under the window.
Love your videos. They inspire me...
Nice job April!
I see one drawer pull missing. Is that on purpose?
One more detail I see, I have the same summit bed (the one you climb) and I love the height!
Do you like it?
+Andrea Arzensek I think it is on purpose cause she said 7 drawers.
+Andrea Arzensek I saw in earlier comments April said the store was one short of her having enough, so bought what they had and when store gets more in, she'll pick another one up.
Talladega Dude thank you!
:)
i used 2 sets of king size 6 drawer waterbed pedestals i picked up at the curb and screwed 2 on top of each other so i had 6 drawers on each side of my bed, then screwed down plywood and used a cotton futon mattress as i have a very bad back and need firm support! i discovered this way back in the 1980's. i also built a 9 drawer dresser for my school bus camper in 1986 by stacking 3 pieces with 3 drawers each and topping with plywood.
how much did this cost
This was the best bed building video I have seen! For all the ok there videos they do the same thing in like a thousand steps.
very pratical bed 10/10
So nice to see a video actually MAKING the bed frame and drawers instead of gluing together drawers from IKEA!
Thanks for the great video!!! I'm looking to make something similar, however I'm going to recess the bed frame so that the mattress won't slide all over the place.
How come you never use glue for joints ?
+Kalinga Athulathmudali You might want to listen at 1:09
+Kalinga Athulathmudali She did use glue.
Great Video. Like the style of presentation, especially when you do not bore us with a long run of showing us how to drill holes etc like so many construction vids. Keep up the good work.
your a badass 👍 👍 and cute to
Awesome job, built better than most furniture nowadays.
DUST ON YOU MACBOOK!!!! I THOUGHT I KNEW YOU!
Ma'am , you mke me want to max out my Homedepot card to build stuff for my garage and bedroom. Keep up with the AWESOME BUILDS. I enjoy watching them and hopefully will build my base for my Kingsize bed soon .
Did you run out of hardware?
LOL it has happened to me.
Well I didn't, the store did. : / They only had 7 handles so I had to order the last.
@@AprilWilkerson may i ask how much you spent in wood to make this bed ?
April inspires me to be a woodworker. I just setup a small shop in my basement to start off.
Pocket holes, BLEH. Lol :P
I needed a new mattress, and got one of these. Unboxing- at last a project I can do and not mess up! Thanks!
Ms.Wilkerson, you should be wearing a dust mask when you are cutting wood! That sawdust is killing your lungs and you will pay for it when you get old.
Dont tell her what to do
Great Video! Easy and not too much with all the specialized wood working tools so beginners can get started. It was a little distracting though not knowing why one drawer pull was missing there ate end of the video. Thanks for making the video!
I so much loved this project that I bought your plans and built it. But instead, I put drawers on both sides and made the frame in two pieces. So, if I move, It can be separated and moved more easily. Thank you! :)
Thank you so much for making this video. This bed frame with storage looks amazing.
Wow! You certainly inspired me. You started from start n it wasn't so complex to understand. Love the dogs... 👍
Beautiful work. The pups and their joy were awesome too!
It's totally amazing to be able to make drawers and bed frame from scratch. I want to be like you, really.
Love you project. Very nice job....Oh, great family too! I have three little dogs myself, well they are my wife's dogs, but once in awhile I get to play with them too!
I’m so impressed by her patience
It looks so easy under your magic hands ! Great work.
That looks awesome. I'm amazed at how handy you are. I wish I could make something like this without losing a body part.
Perfect April! I am going to make twin sized versions for my kids. Well done. Thanks for the video.
Very simple and clever way to install drawers , congrats !!!
Just want to say great job with the bed. I want to make a king size frame and you gave me some good ideas for it.
Love this project! I'm SUPPOSED to be sleeping since I go to work at one am, but I'm hooked on your videos! Will be trying this project at the end of summer. Thanks for the great videos, and I just subscribed. ☺️
I loved this idea. I will make something similar but like you said access to both sides to add extra drawers. thanks for sharing. your husbands so lucky you're good with tools. thanks again.
OMG, you're amazing, this is my 5th video to watch since I ran across your videos (I watched all of the shed building from concrete to roof) and this is lovely. I do have a queen mattress (sitting on my gift from my neighbor a 2nd Q mattress and box) so eventually will move them out to a frame bed. Thanks keep up the good creations.
I admire what passion you are doing.
Hi
Very nice design I had the same type of idea a long time back but never did build it.Your design is
better because of the two rows
of drawers. My idea was to only
have one row.Now that I am
retired many I can build it using
your plan . You are too cool Young
lady. thanks!
April, you're the bomb! Keep up the killer content! As a fellow lady stoked on wood working, I am learning so much from your videos and can't wait till we build our shop so I can apply what I've had the opportunity to learn from you! All my best!
Like your videos,in how each section is done and what tools to use. brilliant
Just found your channel, watched a few videos. Must say you are very creative and have a very nice shop.
This gives me an idea. I'll see if my 11 year old wants to take on this project with me. I'll be sure to use the link to order my mattress. Thank you.
The result is so pretty! ;-; It has that fancy old look to it. Seriously, you're great.
how can people dislike this vdo..no heart
she's amazing and talented
love your practical way of creating this beautiful piece of furniture.
only tip I want to give you (sine u are gi ing the example how its done)is the use of protection cap on the sawtable and a vacuum cleaner on the rail saw.
❤
Impressive work! Nicely done! Now I want to go make mine! If I did this I would have to pre cut everything and assemble it in the room I want the bed in. it would be way to heavy to move into the house without help.
I would definitely do two sides with drawers since my bedroom is large enough, use Furniture grade plywood. My Kreg pocket hole jig. Lots of wooden plugs to hide the screw holes. Interesting that you didn't use glue.
Two sheets of quality plywood to assemble this on so I could have a semi flat surface on a carpeted bedroom floor, then remove them after the project is done.
You made this look soooooo easy , looks awesome , I do like the look and height of the bed . I would like it painted black but kick ass job !!
Forgot to say that you are awesome at what you do. I love your channel
I want to make this for my Daughter's room. I can't wait to see the headboard plans.
Nice job April and I think most of us know you do all the work unless you need someone to hold the stupid end of something. I did a similar commissioned piece 3 drawers on each side and one long full length (6' or so) drawer in the end. For looks I made it look like 3 drawers on the end with 2 of them fake. There were no drawer glides that long so I used ball bearing rollers from H Freight so the long drawer in the end will slide all the way out.
Nice! I'm going to show this to my sister. I'm sure she's going to want to build one for herself like I do!😊
I built a 3 seater sofa recently. My first carpentry effort. The finishing sucked. You know your stuff! Great video.
great video! you made it look easy. never heard them called pocket holes before ,but technically you are correct.
you made look so easy. thank you !! however I don't think I am ready for do that . you are amazing !!!
it inspires me to see women working with tools. just love how it turned up.
