    Finally a method that doesn't use those expensive hinge systems that others are selling. Thank you so much for sharing this. I'll build a similar but horizontal set up soon.

    I just completed my unit and wanted to offer a tip to those of you who make it. When attaching the platform to the unit with the hinges I piled books under the platform until it lined up to avoid pinching my fingers and keeping both of my hands free to align and attach them.

    We have a home in Mexico with a “bodega” (storage room) that we made nice enough to double as a bedroom if we have a larger group visiting (that won’t fit in the other 3 guest bedrooms plus sleeping loft 🤣 - we have lots of family and friends). So this Murphy bed will be PERFECT! I will be my husband’s assistant, as he is the handyman who can do all these projects. But I’ve always said when I retire as a doctor, I want to learn carpentry. Something so special about working with wood and creating beautiful and functional furniture. So glad I found your channel! ♥️

    What measurements should I use for a full size bed? Would spring hinges help with pulling it up & down or should I get the Murphy bed kit? Also, would 1/2” plywood work instead of 3/4” plywood? I don’t want the door to be too heavy for me to lift. Thank for the awesome video and look forward to the response.

    I want to thank you SO much for sharing this! You and I have similar styles when building...I've got the platform and cabinet complete, your video and instructions are easy to follow. I've made mine for a Double bed, not queen. Your idea is fantastic...after searching for weeks for a cabinet style yours truly is the best design I've seen. You're not kidding about how heavy that platform is! lol, I had to trick two big friends of mine to come carry it upstairs for me! I'll be doing the shelving unit slightly different, I want to add a slide out shelf to use for a computer, and mine will be wider.

      I like the no-nonsense simplicity of the design but I think you really need gas struts to stop this heavy bed from falling and injuring someone who is trying to lower it. I have also seen spring assemblages hooked into metal plates, but I feel the gas struts would be a safer option. You should be able to get all the fixtures from any major hardware store. You would need to widen the outer frame to accommodate the struts and hardware.

    How are the hinges holding up so far? I'm in ai similar situation where i must choose to buy the mechanism kit or go with a custom diy cheap solution like yours for the swiwel motion of the bed frame inside the cabinet box. Without gas suspensions/counter weight is it practical to use it everyday holding up and down the whole weight of the matress with the playwood frame, quiet a weight i presume?

    Simon Says.....You are working sooo hard.....Thanks for the educating video.....I am an Old Timer and thus it colours the way i view the present method of carpentry and handy work. I am wondering if it simplifies the work when one replaces nails-screws for dove-tails and that sort of thing.......and the like and would you explain if those old ways create projects that stand....time and abuse...weight....also would there be a way to create storage for blankets and pillows under bed.....Just my dreeam list-project....

    Simon, first, thanks for the additional information; it really helped a lot. Sir, let me tell you, my Murphy Bed turned out great. However, with 3/4" plywood the bed (just the bed not the frame) is very heavy and that is without the mattress. I have not moved the bed into the house yet because I have a couple of important questions. With the queen size mattress, the bed might be too heavy to lift for me or my wife alone. Because I only have a total of 1/4" space, and that is counting both sides of the bed, 1/8" on each side, what type of lifting mechanism would you recommend? Or, do I have to tare down the frame and widen it? Even then, what mechanism do you prefer, spring or piston lifting mechanism and where to buy? Thanks so much; I am expecting visitors from New Orleans in October, and that bed will come in very handy.

    How much larger are the finished dimensions of the cabinet vs the bed frame?? Is it 2" leaving half inch for clearance?? And is the frame 12" shorter than the cabinet in height?

    • @SimonSaysDIY
      @SimonSaysDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The frame is about 8 inches shorter than the cabinet. the frame is mounted about 6 inches off of the ground and then about 2 inches from the top of the frame to the top of the cabinet. I left 1/2 inch gap in between the right and left sides of the frame and the cabinet and the same on the top.
      I hope that helps

    Clearly this is a real man as evidenced by his socks with sandals while doing woodwork.

    New subscriber. Excellent content. One suggestion, though: use another transitional word between paragraphs other than “now.” 😊

    Should have holes or ventilation between the mattress and the plywood

    A gas/pneumatic strut on each side of the mattress platform would help a lot in reducing your effort when you raise and lower the bed.

    What is the name of the glue you use

    • @SimonSaysDIY
      @SimonSaysDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Titebond wood glue. This stuff works great. It takes several hours to dry but when it has hardened the wood will brake apart before the glue joint will. I use it all the time.

    Was this for a full/queen? I’d like to build the exact same thing but for a twin mattress

    • @SimonSaysDIY
      @SimonSaysDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe this was for a queens sized mattress but the design should be easily modified for a twin. :) Thanks for watching!

    No glue?

      It’s holding up really well so far. I used wood glue for most of the joints but some were not necessary.
