    Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

    I dig this channel. I started in Febuary of this year, and have 28 paintings right now, (I didn't say they were all good) and still going. Getting into painting was one of the best things I ever did. I'm a musician, and been playing since I was 10, but from the last year or so I just can't do anything with a lot of emtion or feeling to it because times have been so tough, so painting really filled that void for me recently, and its been a great time. Playing records and painting with fresh coffee is always a good time, and really kept my mind out of the gutter. When painting, you're just focused in the moment, and it helps to be mindful during transitions in life. I've been fishing and painting constantly. Thanks for all the info, Chris, and good luck with all your paintings, everyone. Cheers:)

      Dude we could be best friends honestly this is the same route i was on. i really hit a hard low and normally i would lean to music for help and play my guitar for help emotionally and then my girlfriend on Christmas got me a nice oil painting kit because i had been trying to draw alot. Well i started painting and it has really helped me personally open my mind up more and get out of my lows you can follow me on instagram maybe and share our painting progress or can share things we learned if you want to. My top 4 books focusing on the principles:
    Alla Prima II - R Schmid, Carlson's Guide To Landscape Painting - John Carlson, Composition of Outdoor Painting - E Payne, Color and Light - James Gurney.
    My top 4 videos: Painting The Color of Light - Thomas Jefferson Kitts (15+ hrs of wisdom packed with info and full demonstration). Color, Value, Edges (3 videos) by Daniel Gerhartz (more than 6hrs of a master painter showing how and why).
    These resources are not cheap. They are valuable. Each principle assimilated can take one's art and the value of one's work to the next level.

    Starting to read books on oil painting was the biggest game changer for me so far. I started seeing a noticable difference in my paintings. And I feel like the improvements are (still) happening faster because of what I'm learning. I like reading a bunch of different books by different authors as well because some books talk about the basics in better ways than others. Plus I think all that repetition is super helpful. Funny how often we can hear the same thing over and over before it clicks. So thanks for that recommendation to read!

    I was interested in the Schmidt book but on Amazon it is from 145 to 350. Too rich for me. I already have the books you already refer to all the time and I am happy with that. But, as I told my husband, I find that the books always have limited info for me because along comes questions and those are rarely answered in the books. However, with You tube, and videos like yours, I find I learn so much more. Things that were not available when I was younger. Now I can pick up and learn the things I need to because videos like yours impart so much more info, have the demos needed and I learn like I was in a classroom. Something that was never open to me in my young years.

    • @dianelake7802
      @dianelake7802 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should add that shortly after discovering Paint Coach I slammed my finger on my painting hand in the car door and ended up out of action for over a month. With you tube I can go back and review the videos I missed and learn what I missed.
      I have regrets and sadness that things like youtube and your channel were not around when I was in my twenties and thirties so I could learn what was needed back in those days.
      As much as a bookophile as I am, I find youtube is far superior to learning things then books. To have had this tool so many years ago would have made a huge difference to me.

      Don’t give up on the Schmidt book! If you paint, he will take you up many levels quickly and it’s an enjoyable read. There are also demos on TH-cam from Schmidt that inspire you to read what he wrote as he was truly a master painter that will continue to grow in appreciation as painters become exposed to his work. You might be able to find his Alla Prima 1 book at a used book store and it is awesome as well.

      Do local libraries have it or can they do an interlibrary loan? I'm likely dating myself by suggesting that, but folks need to remember that a treasure trove of tangible information is there for the borrowing at any library anywhere. The Internet can be useful, but there is nothing like having a solid book in your hands, even if a library owns it.

      @@SlowPersuit It was out of stock anyway. No way am I paying 100+ for a book. No book I have ever read has been worth that much money. It will say the same things we all know but in a different way. It is not about what we know, its about getting on with it and practising.
      Good book suggestions but wait to see if you can get it at a reasonable price.

    • @SlowPersuit
      @SlowPersuit 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marke464 Ive been looking at that for a while- the AP ! may become cheaper on the second hand market.
      I don't know about you, but I think it is a horses for courses thing- this is effectively a professional tool for working artists- puts it into "yeh right!" territory for me, but look at PC's reaction to it- and I fillow Chelsea Lang, her stuff is just painfully beautiful, and thats her no. 1. book- so fair enough. (If I could paint like Schmit or Lang after reading that- Id pay thousands, but we all know that's not going to happen).
      The portraiture one basically doesn't seem available in the UK either- and is over £100 with delivery (that I cant even find!) so looks like were all back to Pinterest!

    • @marke464
      @marke464 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SlowPersuit I agree that if it can make you a better painter it is worth a lot of money but it won't make _that_ much difference in the short term. If you are like me and a few years in, its still hard to gather the basics. i cannot paint as well as Chris so I don't think I need the advanced stuff these guys get in to. I think as artists we like to collect things to help us get better and i am all for it.... but be reasonable. No doubt this is useful, when you get to a certain point but we can wait. I suspect we will be ready to spend £100 when we are at the level that we want to pay for it.
      I am lucky enough to have a job that makes it viable I could buy this no problem at all but I still like value for money. I suspect right now this will be more than i can handle. Be patient is my plan.. hopefully I need to buy this book one day.
      i got annoyed by the price of this book and I just ordered £100 of oil paints instead to make myself feel better. Cannot go wrong with an endless amount of paints right?
