Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I agree it's all about the time! I started knowing nothing. I spent hours upon hours watching videos like yours and others. Then when I finally started my journey, it looked horrible. My first painting took like 10 to 15 hrs. It looked so stiff, cartoony and sad. Barely any changes in values, little bit of likeness, and hard line edges in some areas. It was like I colored in a coloring book or something. I quit for about a month but I was watching multiple videos on all sorts of painting. (acrylic, watercolor, digital, oil, etc.) The way some of these people did their paintings looked like magic to me. However I started seeing a small pattern in them.
I looked at the painting and asked myself what I did good and what I did bad. Of course the list of what I did bad was long lol. So I started another painting. This one came out far better. I only used different shades of one color to remove the complexity of colors and learn how to get form down. Doing this helped me get the likeness pretty well and it looked more realistic although monocromatic. (That was one of the tips from the hours and hours of YT vids I watched. Painting in one color would free me from making color decisions and let me focus on form. To free me from other decisions and hone in on one problem.)
When I learned how to mix colors, I didn't try to paint something while mixing those colors.
I watched your YT video and many others about color mixing then sat down and started mixing from the 3 primaries and white. Mixing the paint and getting the right color was more fun than painting...(Because it was something simple and I had to feel my way through it. Get a feeling and hunch on what I had to mix. I started knowing how to mix the primary colors and secondary colors and how putting complements desaturate the color. To replicating the colors in front of me.)
Lastly I want to say DO NOT STOP PAINTING PAINT ABOUT EVERY OTHER DAY!! NO LESS THAN EVERY WEEKEND!!
I keep taking long breaks between painting and the rust is real. Jumping back into painting after a month is pretty hard. Sometimes I just stand there wondering "wait how do i start this?" So to remove the rust I started doing small paintings as fast as possible before starting on one that will take a longer amount of time. I wouldn't have to do this if I was more frequent though.

Great advice 🎨👌 I was a studio painter for 16 years than switched to just plein air's and my paintings are heaps better now. And if I go back to doing a studio painting they are more free and have looser brush strokes. Happy painting Mate 🎨👍
This video is what I need as a beginner. I've been practicing oil painting for some time and I have 5 paintings in total. Yet, it is hard working with supplies and getting to know them. But the hardest thing is lowering your own expectations of yourself. Thank you for this video. Looking forward to new ones.
I paint out of 6 cans of oil paint from the hardware store with 2 dollar brushes.

You're super awesome and well spoken in my amateur oil paintings I'm learning walking away and looking at it from a distance like I do taxidermy really helps improve brush strokes and angles.. One of my paintings the sky changed probably a dozen times but then I started getting the waves of my clouds and it started looking cloudy and stormy.some what..its less about color more about precise movements.. (The greats were not great from birth they were great because they painted a lot) Macklemore...

I tried copying from another artist several times, and just didn't feel I learned anything from it. My painting turned out amazing, but I knew it wasn't mine, so it didn't thrill me. Rather, I found working from life has caused my greatest growth. Just me.
When learning I copied alot. It's a great way to learn but then I struggled with finding my style also 🎨👍

I agree with learning with a limited palette but we can’t get every colour with four or five colours. But, that needs to be something to find out after becoming fluid with a limited palette; there are no shortcuts but if we love the process, pushing to the limits of a palette is not a chore. Anyway, I love your honesty and directness. We need honest voices that address progression in the craft.

Can you talk about at what point( after copying masters), how do you paint on your own subject, do you start from painting photo, painting live ( ie fruits), the set up seems to be daunting considering the lighting. Very well analyzed and I especially liked - you have to decide what you want to be better at - find artist that you really like and make Master copied just to learn - and of course give credit to whom you copied. And I would add paint from a balance between the analytical and the imaginary - paint from the # heart-mind - look at a lot of art and look at art from different cultures and from all known art- history

I’m constantly promoting process over product. The hike out to paint is worth the effort in itself regardless of the painting you bring home. We are here to paint, not to have a painting. You can buy a painting. You can’t buy the process of painting. Process over product.

Tip #10 applies to everything!!! don’t limit yourself!
get a battery/chargery/generator, a motion detector or two, and an alarm and place it where a mountain lion would approach, and you can rest assured it won't pounce without you know it's there first. a loud buzzar will probably scare it off, but will alert you of it's approach first.

I didnt believe anybody could just naturally paint or do anything just naturally either. And then I tried oil painting. My third painting (the first one I finished) was pretty damn good. And I seem to get better considerably with every painting. Same thing happened with drawing except it was a little slower. I was drawing and drawing for weeks and was totally unhappy with the results but then one day I went to draw my friends kids and bam it was like it just clicked and. suddenly I could draw to my own satisfaction. It has been a really strange trip. I started oil painting like 3 months ago and I am already completely comfortable selling my work. Nothing in my entire life has come so easy to me and most things come easy to me. Oil painting has been just about the strangest turn of my entire life. Because I'm obsessed with it now, but I didn't have to work for it. Usually things that come so easy are boring. But it isn't I love it. I'm not as good as Chris. I'm probably not as good as quite a few of his students. But I feel like my improvement has been almost miraculous. Ive never seen anything like it. Truly bizarre. I'm not even saying this to brag. I have no explanation for it. I just find it to be unbelievably strange. So much so that I doubt many will even believe ,it. But that's ok. Anyway, your shows great Chris thanks for doing what you do.

I see way too much #7 out there. I'm not satisfied with my ability to do the style of painting I want to be good at. But I'm not going to take the easy path and just say that "these aren't mistakes. This is just my style." I see this is so many "artists". Pay your dues and get wonderful at the style you know you love and the level to impress yourself. Pay your dues.

I would like to be able to paint realistic looking nebulae (think end credits Star Trek "Beyond") on silk and organza....any help available for this???
I prefer to draw on paper first and then trace that onto the canvas because I'm not yet confident with drawing directly onto the canvas with the darker value, does that still count as getting better at drawing instead of painting? I'm a beginner, I've only done two oil paintings thus far, really love it though, then I stumbled upon your channel because I was looking for ways to improve what I already know and understand about oils, so far I've learned alot from your channel, I'm gonna give blocking in the values like you teach because I was struggling abit with the values. I also need to work more on layering, fat over lean. I have adhd so I tend to seek different subjects because they peek interest, doing one thing can sometimes bore me, for now, I've started with fruits just to learn with something easy.

Why choose a long flat over a short flat and vice versa? Is there a reason to use one over the other?
I paint out of 6 cans of paint from the hardware store with 2 dollar brushes . One painting a day, 228 so far this year, take a short vid and pic then cover it over and start a new one. It's not important to be in a gallery, sell paintings, get accolades,, it's important to paint.
So I come from a watercolor background trying my best to learn oil painting so I have 2 questions. Number the first, so when I taught myself watercolor I found that I had 2 glasses of water. One to clean my brush and another of clean water to not mix my colors as I pulled them. Should I be using my paint thinner to clean my brush? Ive noticed that when I do, the rest of my colors become muddy as I add paint thinner to them. Should I just get another container of clean paint thinner to pull from or how do I clean my bushes between colors?
Second, what do you do with the excess paint on your palette? I use a lot of paint and find myself with still a lot of paint on my palette cause I havent used it all and it feels wasteful to just throw it away...
Wipe off the brush with a rag or paper towels as much as you can every time you rinse it or change color hues. Unlike watercolor, the brush doesn't need to be wet or moist unless you need that thinner in the paint.
As to the paint in the palette, try squeezing less paint at first and replenish as you use it up. If there's still much leftover you can use it the following days because it can takes couple of days to dry. Sometimes the leftover paint creates a dry film on top but if you break it the paint inside is still wet

One of your tips is don't paint from bad photos. That's an issue for me. Some of my older or departed relatives have very few photos from certain periods of their lives. My grandfather on my dad's side only had one picture taken in the last five years of his life. (Just as an example.. he died mid 1960's) He died when my father was only fourteen so that is the man dad remembers, not the younger man in the other rare photos. That one photo is partially washed out from an overhead sun.
Anyways, if I ever get good at portrait painting, replicating the people in those photos onto canvas would be my primary goal. Do you perhaps have any tips or tricks that might compensate for the various issues one would encounter from painting from bad photos? Heck how about painting from a photo where someone is cross-eyed or wrinkling their nose... is there a good way of editing those things out?
Also a little off topic but that tea/coffee pot thingy on your desk looks like it would be fun to paint... I see why you have it.
I have done paintings from really bad photos ( portraits) and they came out fairly good, not great. It just takes a lot more time and work. If you have a lot of experience in portrait painting it can be done fairly successfully. Certainly, don’t recommend it, though.
Chris has a Moka Pot because it makes the best coffee.
I agree with the point that less colors is better but it’s worth nothing for the theory of it that you can’t actually get every color from the primaries right
Alizarin crimson pr83 is not lighfast. It will fade. Better to use prrmanent crimson pr177 and better yet pr122 or pv19

PROCESS primaries are best as some reds are already contaminated w yellow...so getting a book like BLUE AND YELLOW DONT MAKE GREEN is crucial to learn color theory. Adding white to color to lighten is a bad crutch, like adding milk to colored water. Learn color mixing before wasting a ton of bad batches of muck

I like Alizarin Crimson as my primary red, too, but I'm concerned when I read that it is much less permanent than other pigments. Some of your paintings are so good that I assume you want them to outlive you.
I haven't painted in 30 years (wanted to devote time to child raising). Now the children are growing up enough, I want to get back into painting but I can't remember how/why to use mediums and I can't find specifics. I would normally paint in increments, not an entire painting in one day. Any advice?
Yours is exactly my situation too. So I watched all his youtubes, and especially took his advice of trying to paint something everyday and not to care about the bad paintings. It's more important to get into the habit and devote a space and have it than it is to work on one big painting that I might give up on eventually. So I've been painting along with his little studies. Like the apples and lemons. I do each one a couple of times until I learn from a bunch of mistakes.
I am getting more confidence as I go. Really tho, it is a matter of just practicing. So much fun. Best of luck to you!
@@claires9100 I've kept up on drawing over the years since that doesn't consume me as much as painting would. I could literally spend days painting and not eat or have much awareness of time. So, art was channelled elseware over the years. Now, I must get back to painting. I feel like I never should've set it aside for so long.

No real reason. Sometimes I use cad red instead
@@paintcoach alizarin probably gives you some brighter oranges and more vivid purples when mixing than the cad red. I like a 3 primary plus white palette but with some paynes grey as well. Luvvvvvvv paynes grey!

I honestly think that unless you have studied (played with and experimented with) the primary colours and mixing your own you should not be buying exotic colours...it might sound silly but it’s the same as buying brushes you don’t need...het comfortable with mixing your own colours from the primaries and understand what those colours are made up of, only then can you know if you NEED leaf green or magenta instead of viridian and alizarin crimson kind of vibes...if I’m making sense

I am sure you already know this, but a filmmaker once told me, always make real coffee when you are filming. People notice the steam, or lack of it.
