Great video. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am a very new Woodturner and need to make some handles for some chisels. 😊 I learned a lot from your video. 😊

Yes - Robo, we need a vid on "the big ugly" you mentioned it a couple of times. Now we need to know more; what is it, how to make it, buy it, how to use it...... My thanks Reed for all your great videos..... Doug.

This is exactly what I needed! I came to the internet hoping for some hints and tips, and you gave step-by-step perfect instructions. Thank you!!

Thanks, Reed. I really enjoy your videos, and have been waiting for the latest installment.
I particularly liked your comments about the way the spindle roughing gouge is often taught and demonstrated.

Great video - enjoyed seeing how you do it. And neat idea about using plywood to make a handle.
I've done this two ways. One is the way you showed. The other to make the handle blank from two pieces of wood. In this approach, I use a bench chisel cut a mortise in both pieces with a depth of one-half the thickness of the tang.
I've usually cut a scrap of wood to make a rectangular plug that fits into the hole so that the point on the lathe center can actually contact wood.

Leave the wood a little over size for the Ferrell and just heat the Ferrell up and slip it on and cool with a wet rag.

What happened to the plywood (baltic birch) handle, you switched to a solid wood once you started turning? I was looking forward to seeing how it finished.

Hi Reed! That is a great way to make a handle for a square tang! Thank you for sharing my friend! Cheers! Daniel

Great Idea! Outstanding tutorial. I had to watch it twice. I've been looking at a tool with a rectangular tang. This would work perfectly. I want a dedicated handle but was concerned about strength. I really enjoy your work.

Seems odd to see you doing spindle work... I like it! I really like this approach and can't wait to give it a try.

The plywood handle is still around the shop some where. I moved 4 years ago, and am still finding stuff. I do still keep trying to use the skew. For me, one huge point was stropping the burr off. It cuts much better, and I get a burr even on an 8000 grit lapping plate.

And no epoxy on the tang, eh? I was expecting to see you glue it in. OK, now that I have that Big Ugly, my mission this week is to make a handle for it. On the ferrule, do you have to cut the brass fitting or can you buy it that length? As you are using it, the ferrule appears to be shorter in length than a brass fitting for that diameter of pipe. Last time I made my own parting tool, I bought ferrules from Rockler. The Big Ugly may need a ferrule diameter larger than what I used before.

I bough 6 or so inch long sections and cut them on the lathe. A high speed parting tool will do, low speed. Not sure how well a hack saw would work. You may be able to find copper fittings that will work also. When I do the glue up, there is a bit of squeeze out on the inside where the tang is inserted. It does take some effort to pound it in.

This was great, I have been researching "how to improve your putting stroke" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Graysonyon Putter Prolific - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my co-worker got amazing success with it.

Hi Reed. You mentioned your big ugly tool .?? What is it and do you have a video on it.
By The way your videos are just fantastic, you are a primo wood turner .I did have to laugh a bit when you were using the ruffing gouge though a bit like me newby hahaha
Thank you your videos they are much appreciated by me.

+john horsfall John, that video is coming. The Big Ugly is a scraper with tantung. cast metal almost as hard as carbide that is silver soldered onto flat bar stock, and can be sharpened on regular grinding wheels.

+robohippy Oh yea, Ed Webber, a turner on Woodturner's Resource, drills round holes and then makes wedges out of a round dowel to drive in the sides around the flat sides. One I didn't think of.

Robo, are you going to be selling the big ugly scrapers?

    • @robohippy
      @robohippy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

+OscarOscar Oscar, it is a remote possibility, but traditionally it is a do it yourself tool. You need some one with torch skills. A 6 inch piece of 1/8 thick by 1 inch wide tantung is about $55, which would make a scraper with 3 inches of it in the $100 range, where if a club has a work party, they can do it a lot cheaper. I will have that clip up soon.

Heya, This is a nice video here. The most complete woodworking plans that I have ever used was Toms Magic Wood (just google it). Without a doubt it contains the most helpful woodworking plans that I have ever tried.
