Life is not about whether there will be problems; rather about how you deal with the problems. You deal with the problems that come up in your projects exquisitely. Lesser woodworkers would have turned to resin in this case. You made a highlight out of a problem... congrats, man.
Awesome, thanks Cory!
Beautiful bowl, the inlay area is stunning. I really love how the alabaster and branches pop against the walnut. Beautiful work, thanks so much for sharing with us😊
You very welcome! Thanks
I love going over your older videos, I found the walnut with cherry branches and white alabaster, I have to say next to box elder burl, walnut is my favorite, the figure in the wood is spectacular and I love the purity of the white alabaster. Absolutely stunning
Thanks so much!
Absolutely beautiful. Your idea for the small tree brach filler was fantastic. It really sets off the piece perfectly. Always love the grains in the wood and this one is extraordinary. 👍
Thanks!
This is my new favorite channel.
Awesome! Welcome aboard!
I always love when you apply the finish. The bowl comes alive. Awesome job.
It’s the best part! Thanks 🙏
That white alabaster is so simply elegant
Can’t argue that. Thanks!
This is a really nice bowl I like the white alabaster it is an exceptional bowl the grain and colour of the walnut wood is awesome. Well done x
Thanks 😊
Still one of your most exquisitely gorgeous bowls ever!
Wow, thank you!
Oh my! Talk about gorgeous! I love the inlay with the wood and the alabaster! Stunning results! Fantastic job! Bravo!
Thank you so much!
Just going through older videos,….this is one of, if not my favorite bowls you have done.
Thank you very much!
That walnut sure does have beautiful grain. Beautiful bowl.
It does! Thanks!
I like the little dots! So unusual and attractive.
Thanks Ruth!
Thank you for your kind comments, I really appreciate people watching my videos from around the world!
The alabaster in the crack makes it look like a vein of mineral in the ground. Definitely beautiful 🥰
Thanks 😊
What a marvelous bowl! I hope you don’t mind, but I had to fast-forward through the Dremel drilling in the beginning because I was just at the dentist yesterday and didn’t want to relive that visit… 😅
Open wide, haha. Thanks
Pretty, your inlays are always interesting,👍👍👍
Thanks 🙏
A beautiful bowl and fix. Love the idea of natural remedies for a problem
Thanks Judith!
Just new to your channel. Watched about 4 videos. Love your talent and ability to explain what most people will be asking you about before they do. Thank you for your service in peacekeeping. It is the greatest thing a person can do for us Canadians! Keeping us all safe. Thanks for that and your videos!
It was my pleasure, thanks for your kind comments, Jim.
What an amazing incredible bowl. It turned out so beautiful. My kind of bowl, large! 😊 You also have beautiful handwriting. I never noticed you are left handed. So is my son. 😊 Great job. Take care, stay safe and well. 😺❤
I do have the left handed curse, lol. I always think my writing is not all that great then I see my doctors writing, lol. Thanks 🙏
@@SpragueWoodturning 😆
I’ve only done metal powder inlays so far, aluminum, copper, bronze and brass. Looking forward to emulating your work and hope someday to get close to your work. Watching your channel is the overall best learning I have found for ALL things related to bowl turning plus just a pleasure to watch . You sir are a GREAT teacher.
Wow! Thanks! Got lots of great content coming up, thanks for watching, Jim.
Every bowl I see you do impresses me more. I love the walnut, cherry and white alabaster combo. Truly a work of art.
There a great match, thanks.
A picture never does beauty justice. Look at pictures of your beautiful country and it never is the same. In my previous comment I should have said while you were doing the inlay.
I kind of figured that’s what you were talking about. I said it to myself when editing the video, lol.
Good afternoon Jim. Glad to see Canada back on your intro. Go Canada!!! Thank you so very much for sharing your art techniques with us. You teaching is always so very clear and detailed. You are giving your audience a great gift. This bowl is just spectacular!!! Just like all your pieces. "If you can't fix it, feature it". Blessings to you and your loved ones. Greetings from upstate NY. Namaste. 💖🕉👌👍👍👍👍👍💟
Wow, thanks Vicki, your the best! 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Amazing that the bowl held together so you could do your magic on it.
If you think this one is amazing you should see my recent video on inlay comparisons in cherry, let’s just say I wasn’t standing in the throw of the lathe, lol.
Looks great love it can’t wait to see the shine on it
I like them shiny, lol. Thanks.
Looks really stylish!
Thanks 🙏
Another great one, and you are right- that is beautiful grain. Curly Walnut is not seen every day. Thanks again.
Thanks 🙏
Another great one Jim I hope one day I could put out such great work. I have some pretty nice bowls but it's going to take hours of more to get on the same level as you RIDE ON !!!
Thanks John, I really appreciate it!
What a beautiful bowl
Thanks 🙏
thanks for going over the glue blocks
My pleasure, thanks for watching!
Beautiful bowl!
Thanks 😊
Love how the alabaster and cherry branches add contrast and interest to the walnut. Not that it needs it with all that beautiful grain. Another beautifully finished piece.
Awesome, thanks Valerie.
Very beautiful and creative!
Thanks 🙏
The finish on that walnut is spectacular. You have a good eye.
Thanks Sonia!
Awesome Bowl!
Thanks Roger!
It really is a beautiful bowl Jim. The grain is spectacular. Nice work.
Thanks Kirsten!
Turned out really cool and different
It’s a special one, thanks.
That's a stunning bowl. I love the twig and alabaster inlays. Thanks for the videos.
Thanks 🙏
InstaBlaster.
Rescue turning with gorgeous end result. You can be proud .
Thanks for sharing .
Wow absolutely stunning.
Thanks Dave
Beautiful work, Jim. I like the combination of figured Walnut and white Alabaster. Thanks for sharing your ideas and techniques. Good video techniques also make it easier to learn by watching you. I have a chunk of Plumb crotch that I roughed out 2 years ago. It split and warped badly, but I could not throw it into the firewood pile. Now I have a better idea of what I may be able to do with it. Thanks again! All the Best!
Awesome chris, thanks 🙏
Beautiful!
Thanks 🙏
That is beautiful!
Thank you!
I loved this video; thanks for sharing your expertise. A fantastic job.
Awesome thanks 🙏
well done ,thanks, BM,aka, woodbutcher
Thanks, Bryan.
I highly recommend Jims bowls, I just bought one.... beautiful
Also a question, is there an inlay that is a dark green?
Yes, I have a serpentine inlay that’s quite dark green, it’s almost black but with a green ting to it, thanks again for your purchase, Jim.
Really beautiful piece Jim.. the contrasts between the walnut and alabaster work really well. Looking forward to shells next week 🙂
Thanks!
So beautiful. Makes me think of Kintsugi.
Totally, thanks 😊
When your using your pressure pot, have you ever tried using heavy pot liners? I use them in my pots that I use in the fiberglass business. Hot fiberglass reaches a thermal cure temperature of 187F. But I've had occasion with hot mixed resin reaching much higher temps that would melt 5gal. buckets but didn't melt the liners. Just a thought for your resin pours. If nothing else they will protect your pot from leaks in other forms. The come in many sizes. Love your work. Stay safe and free.
I’ve never actually heard of them, good suggestion, thanks
Looks fantastic
Thanks 🙏🏻
your work and the bowl speaks for itself no need to say anymore, great work
Thank you, Michael!
oh WOW, that grain look so cool. great job
Thank you very much!
I really like yourvideos. You do amazing work.
Thanks 🙏
Beautiful grain in that wood...and such an amazing finish. I have to agree in that the alabaster looks more natural than epoxy. Amazing work, Jim. Thanks for the videos!
Awesome, thanks 🙏🏻
Very interesting piece to begin with I like the branch inlay it adds a great area of focus to the piece.
Thanks!
Jim, you are a well established great artist. No denying about it. I’m a old lady also a woodturner, and I’m very impressed with your work. I live in Kingston Ontario. Could you tell me where you get your different stone such alabaster for your inlays ? I do not go in stores to shop anymore. Do you have a internet site to recommend? Thank you very much. Following your channel (religiously) over and over. Just love your work and your explanations and demonstrations are so clear. .
Hi Sylvie, there is links in the description for soapstone from Lee Valley and link to sculptural supply in Toronto for a variety of other stones. They both do mail orders, Jim.
Another brilliant ‘save’ Jim. Well done. The walnut figuring is spectacular 😍
Thanks Jeanie
stunning !
Thanks!
I love alabaster I'd like to see you work more in it maybe tint your glue a color to change the white alabaster to that color that would be cool
Possibly 🤔, thanks
Hi Jim. Your work is absolutely stunning!. Thank you for sharing it. You have certainly inspired me to try something different. Keep turning and thanks for being so generous with your ideas. God bless. From Cape Town , SA.
Thanks Dugan!
Very very beautiful man!!!
Thanks Steven!
Beautiful bowl. I love the inlays.
jean long Thanks Jean!
Hello Jim, really a great work, simply a wonderful bowl.
Greetings from Austria.
Awesome, thanks!
Absolutely stunning. I agree inlays are more complimentary to wood than resin.
awesome, thanks.
Man, that's some nice work. Jim you're really good at 'splaining what you're doing. I'm learning a lot from you. Thanks.
Great! Thanks 🙏
Wow! That was such a beautiful bowl! The grain is fantastic. Thanks for bringing it out. Great work!
Awesome thanks 🙏🏻
Another Spectacular piece of art!❤️👍
Thanks Wanda!
Absolutely Stunning!
Thank you so much!
Amazing technique . Fantastic job in turning a lifeless piece of wood into a stylish master piece. Keep turning. Just to look at the finish product. We can feel and see the dedication and love you put into your passion. Well done. Joseph from Melbourne . Australia .
Thanks Jose, I really appreciate it.
Looks beautiful, great details. Looking forward to next week.
Awesome thanks 🙏
Stunning 👌💕
Thanks
Awesome, love the inlays
Glad you like them!
Stunning bowl! I love your approach of filling the voids with ground stone instead of using resin like most turners do... awesome work! stay safe
Awesome, thanks 🙏
The finishing is so beautiful, explication are clear and perfect
Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge
Pete King Thanks 🙏
The grain is 3D effect, beautiful job. Stay safe.
It’s all in the sanding and the finish, thanks 🙏
Cracking grain in that walnut, wish I could get hold of a load of that here in Scotland. 👍👍👍
Yup, it might be tough to find there, lol.
Exquisite!
Thank you 🙏
What a gorgeous bowl, Jim.!
Billy
It’s a beauty, thanks.
Wonderful bowl. The alabaster is fantastic with the dark walnut. I was amazed how deep that crack was and yet it stayed in one piece. Your skill and the CA glue did the trick. Do you still use inlays as often now that you have so much experience with epoxy? From a production volume or aesthetics point of view do you prefer inlay to epoxy? Your results with both are excellent. Thanks again for making these videos.
I do more resin work now, but still do some natural inlays behind the sheen too. The resin is funner and more versatile to work with. Thanks
Incredible inlay work Jim!! Gorgeous piece of walnut. Cheers, Paige C.
Thanks Paige!
Jim this is just brilliant, magnificent and spectacular, the Alabaster gave it a fantastic look. I saw the one you did with the soap stone which turned out just as awesome. Now we come to the grain ohhhhh boy that is breathtakingly beautiful.
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
That is a beautiful bowl. Love the look of the inlay. Finish is perfect
Thanks 🙏
I learned a lot. Thank you. Hopefully i can create wonderful pieces as you have once i get my full sized lathe
You welcome, thanks 🙏
Good popcorn bowl
It would be a great one, thanks.
I just couldn't see where you were going with this one at first but the end was amazing! So pretty! 💜
Thanks Tracey!
Beautiful
Brilliant again I love walnut I think its a fantastic wood be safe
Walnut is king, thanks 🙏
Jim, I can't get over the quality of your work! And your videos! - they are so clear and easy to follow! I have some of the GF salad bowl finish, but have been using walnut oil so that my customers are able to use it for after care once they are using the bowl. I heard you say on a video you feel this finish holds up well without need for aftercare?? Is your inlay pad newspaper with duct tape? great idea!
Thanks, the inlay pad is cardboard that over the years has been covered in duck tape to keep it together, lol. Yes, after three coats or more, I consider the wood bowl finish to be maintenance free. If your using raw walnut oil that’s not been heat treated to kill the protein that people with nut allergy’s are allergic too could be bad day for someone, Jim
@@SpragueWoodturning I am using either Mahoney walnut oil or Doctors Workshop Walnut oil. I will have to check with them to see if they have heat treated it, I can only imagine they have.
Amy Baumgart I know Mahoneys is ok because I checked into it years ago when I was looking for a food safe finish. Don’t know about the other one.
Dear Jim, Fantastic Job, Appreciate, Ketan Solanki from India.
Thanks 🙏🏻
Fantastic
Thanks 😊
Absolutely gorgeous Jim..I love the insert of the Cherry wood and Alabaster it looks much more natural and it does add beauty to the wood.. to be honest I often wonder about the resins and I wonder if they would start to yellow with age ..With this method it should stay crisp always .I love the way the branches look on the top rim too 😀 ..
I really like making them, thanks 🙏
Wow! So much grain in one bowl!
Totally! Thanks for watching
Impressive
Thanks!
Супер !!! Молодець !!! 👍👍👍
Thanks 🙏
That's beautiful! I really love the grain. (I just love wood). Why does the alabaster look blue when you're done? Thanks for another good one. Stay safe.
The alabaster can be quite translucent so anything will color will slightly bleed through it, in this case the walnut, thanks.
@@SpragueWoodturning I was actually gonna ask why you're up so early, then I remembered, I'm in MST and you'd be EST, so yes, 2 hours later. I'm a night person.
Another beautiful example of your work, thank you very much for sharing, are you using green branches for the inlay or have you dried them over the years?
Just like my bowls, the branches are kiln dried as well. If you use green branches they will shrink and fall out.
Nice work. I've been following your channel for a couple of months and enjoy what you do...especially doing it without resin. I don't think I would like to deal with the resin mess. I generally fill my smaller voids the traditional way of sawdust and either CA or white wood glue. You finish only with the wood bowl finish from General Finishes? Do you need to friction polish? Finally, I was going to tease you about Canada does not drive on the wrong side of the road so why are you turning on the wrong side of the lathe...but I decided you must be left handed.
You got it, I only use Wood Bowl Finish, no friction need and yes I’m left handed.
I would recommend using bronze wool in lieu of steel wool as it doesn't oxidize nor form 'fish eyes' in the finish.
Interesting, I’ve never heard of it, thanks.
do you buff your bowls after finish I really enjoy your vidoes and learn a lot Thanks for sharing with us stay safe
Sometimes I do and sometimes not. If I do, I use white diamond. With walnut, some of the powder can get imbedded in the wood so I usually don’t on walnut.
Holy crap! What is the finish and how can I get some!.. damn that’s shiny!
Wood bowl finish, there’s a link in the description below.
very beautiful Bowl! You have inspired me to try and save some of my cracked and punky roughturned bowls.
Thanks for sharing....How thick did the walls of that bowl end up being? It looked like about a half inch ,but its hard to tell on video..Thanks Again
Thanks! I usually leave them at least 1/2 thick, this one is 5/8. I really like a weighted bowl.
