    This is the ideal blend. I wish more OEMs would invest in PHEV. 50miles full EV =reduce 90% of daily mileage for commuters without being tied to charging network (home or work will do) not to mention range anxiety. Oh and you don’t need to log around a 90+Kw battery when you only need 20-30. So in resources, three PHEVs to one EV.

    Great video. The BMW X5 50e loses cargo space and the ability for a spare tire of any sort over the standard engine X5. Is the same true for the 450e vs. the regular 450? I really wish Mercedes had kept the 6 cylinder in this as the X5 50e w/the 6 cylinder is at a similar price point and I'd rather have a 6 cylinder.

  • @ronanomahony4972
    @ronanomahony4972 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    @MBUSA why no 6 cyliner in this model? For this price point buyers don't want 4 cylinders. The refreshed X5 xDrive 50e is a much more compelling product and comes with a gutsy inline 6. I own a 2019 E450 and glad to see the refreshed W214 is still retaining a 6 cylinder. If the option is a 4 cylinder motor or pure EV, at that point I'd just take a pure EV over a 4 banger hybrid.

    You say bmw does 2.0 liter engines in their midsize cars and crossovers better, but they don’t cheap out with a 2.0 in any of their midsize and above SUVs, they’re all standard with a 3.0 liter I-6 which to me is the minimum for a “luxury” suv. I think it’s what truly separates it from this. The x5 50e gets 50+ miles of real world electric range, paired with a 3.0L engine that goes 0-60 in high 3s / low 4s. It somehow ALSO gets the same, if not better, fuel economy when operating in hybrid mode. I think it’s truly just the superior drivetrain and overall package.

    PHEVs make so much sense, but at these prices, it’s like a celebrity pretending to care about the environment, but flying the private jet from LA to Vegas. Nonsensical and borderline hypocritical, specially because you’re paying a premium for the PHEV model over the ICE model, so you’d have to drive the car for 300,000 miles to see the savings in gas, but realistically speaking, a Mercedes is not reliable enough once they hit 50,000 miles without MAJOR repair costs, so the whole thing just makes no sense at all!

    23.3 kWh, that's nice. Need to work on EV efficiency still, I guess? That body height and style may never be truly eco.
    The cells used for such a larger PHEV ought to be lower cost than for a 5 kWh or 1 kWh pack expected to provide the same power. If we say this is 1/4 of a Plaid pack, it would be good for peaks of 250 hp and on longer pulls, fade to 200 hp and multi-minute track use around 125 hp. Really FINE, right? And Plaid cells can't be very expensive, maybe $120-150/kWh?

    • @Cloxxki
      @Cloxxki ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Charging at 60 kW also checks out as a 1/4 Plaid equivalent, that one (perhaps unambitiously) tops at 250 kW, while the output is rated at 750 kW.

    Extra 200 lbs... with a 23.3 kWh battery? lol... good luck with that one. They save a bit of weight with the smaller engine, but then add in that battery (which is larger than most PHEVs) and likely 2 electric motors, inverters, charging equipment, and wiring, and you're easily looking at an additional 500-700 lbs.

    With long range cars geting more powerful, their CHEAP cells can be used for PHEV us, I guess?
    Take 1/5th (exactly one module) of a Plaid battery, that's 20 kWh. Good for 200h hp the way the Plaid is good for 1000 hp. Peaky, but it'll work for every day driving. 200 hp boost is NICE, sight? A 200 hp hybrid motor is nothing strange. Could be place behind a gearbox to torque fill and not load the gearbox. A cute little 4-cyl more than suffices. Let alone Koenigseggs super tiny featherweight 3-cyl with 600 hp. With a light ICE and gearbox, battery weight is less of a problem. And with ground up design, if it ever happens for PHEVs from Europe, is easily tucked away. The 120 kWh of sedans is tucked away as well, right? And they're getting 150 kWh soon.

  • @updlate4756

    They should just get rid of the non-plug in versions. All this talk about... "But EVs get tax credits"... except they cost more to offset the credits. "But EVs cost less to fuel and maintain"... the car costs over $80k... people buying this don't care about fuel costs. What we need to care about is the environment, because it doesn't matter how rich you are... we only have one planet. And I'm just assuming we can't convince the rich bastids to ride a bike, a bus, or a train... In fact... any money they save will just go into even more lavish vacations... if we're being honest. Planet first people. And on the bright side, plugging in a PHEV in your garage sure beats the hell out of going to a gas station and handling that nasty plug that hundreds of other people have handled, that likely has a nice coating of gasoline on it... and then you get to touch the inside of your car, your face, your kids... after using it. Yuck. Be kind to the planet people, that's what matters most. BTW... "But I'll be dead by then" is a real greedy / crappy thing to say... old rich people.

    • @scooter5940
      @scooter5940 ปีที่แล้ว

      But that's exactly WHY they don't have to report it - it's part of the government's dishonesty behind the EV push. These PHEVs get shitty mileage, and most have smaller engines than their ICE counterparts, so they are underpowered to boot - once the battery is depleted. Still makes sense for some people, just like EV's do for a different driver - it just depends on how you use the vehicle. But they are not nearly as practical for as large of a group of people, or as efficient, as the government wants us to believe.

    I have had a Mercedes GLCe from 2020. At its peak in the summer, it gives 35 Km of electric range (drops to 26 Km in winter in Canada). I work 10 Km from home, so my electricity takes me to and from work daily without any gas consumption. My trip computer on the car says that, for the 3+ years that I've had this car, I've driven 35000 Km total, but 29000 of the total is electric. So the engine has only worked for 6000 Km! The car has done a couple of road trips, and I never worried about range, as I could easily fill up at any gas station on the route. Now my other car is a Tesla Y, which I've had for just over a year. Lots of good things in the Tesla for the user, and I've never had any range anxiety issues for my day to day use. However, I decided to take the Tesla on the last road trip to Seattle, which is 230 Km away from home. I just made it there on the full charge, but I had to keep thinking about where the next charge was going to come from the entire trip. Yes, there are fast chargers in many places, but they are usually out of my planned route. And on this trip, it was cold and rainy/windy, so the thought of finding a supercharger and then getting out of the car to plug it in, and then sit there for the charging time, wasn't a comforting thought. My family consists of just my wife and myself now, so we don't need the GLE (I've owned 4 in the past). If Mercedes would make a new version of the GLCe but with the 100 Km range, it would be my ideal car for day to day use and for road trips! Why are we only doing it in the larger vehicles?

  • @peternguyen2323

    I purchased, new, a GLE 550e plug-in hybrid. The Mercedes has been the worst vehicle ownership experience of my life. The vehicle has had transmission problems since it was new, it developed a leak in the rear differential a few months in, the air suspension failed at 40,000 km, there is a recall notice for the fuel pump control unit and I just received a letter indicating that the air conditioning compressor might fail prematurely. Worse than the technical problems, is the dismissive attitude of Mercedes customer service that says the transmission jolts and lurches that I continue to experience are normal for a $100,000 luxury vehicle. Not to mention that the electric range is much less than what was advertised when I ordered it.

    Now what can be done to make these PHEVs less heavy? Range cells from powerful EVs that offer good cycle count, that would help. Smaller engine, we know how to get plenty from small engines now, right? And tie the hybrid side into the ICE side in a clever way that allows super efficient EV driving, smooth and efficient "self charging" when getting low but wanting some reserve to arrive at the cul the sac or UN headquarters in style.

    • @Cloxxki
      @Cloxxki ปีที่แล้ว

      A single motor on the rear diff, no gear tunnel to send ICE power there. Would that be acceptable?
      On the ICE, a motor/generator that can be fully detached through a clutch. On real long distance cruises 55-80 mph, the ICE does the job, in final drive, in perfect rpm range, agree? Then we only need to figure wheth we actually need for a gearbox to be there. Koenigsegg shows "not really". PHEVs need much lower top speed gearing, which actually helps the direct drive (with torque converter) configuration: ICE can do its thing with good torque from a lower speed. In the Koenigsegg Regera it's 30 mph, in a PHEV road car that could be 15-20 mph, with a diesel maybe 10-15 mph, using the rev doubling torque converter. Below that, we have a sizable drive battery and instant torque motor which helps all the way to top speed, or a bit less even if better for overall efficiency to have it rev a bit, but be detached over 100 mph.

    Until the whole inlet kerfuffle is ironed out and one plug rules the day, I’m not encouraging anyone to buy anything that needs a plug until North America finishes its whimsical transition from the standard you used in this episode to Elon’s self declared standard which is really just a Tesla plug that currently only Tesla’s can use which is not a standard at all but is one EV Manufacturer’s design. By the way in 16 minutes I charged up 68% which is 53kW for an additional 154 miles of range at an EA Station on a 77.4kWh 2023 IONIQ 5 using that CCS Standard Plug. If I used a Tesla Magic Doc it would have taken an hour and 16 minutes. See the improvement? Neither do I‼️ 14:42

    I for one would be interested to see someone do a proper proof of concept with a Koenigsegg Direct Drive style drivetrain. No gearbox at all, just a torque converter that is manually opened/closed with a paddle behind the wheel. Clever hybrid integration for low speed pull and reverse gear. Koenigsegg triumped Direct Drive with the record holding Regera car, but abandoned it for the Gemera 4-seater that is getting AWD. For most driving, DD might still suffice, and crucially: be fun to drive. Halving the Koenigsegg's top speed helps A LOT for every day use. A torquey diesel motor (that stll revs decently high) could be great. Always in the 125 mph/200 kph gear, torque converter can double the revs = half the gearing effectively. So drive away in the 62 mph gear, and then always the hybrid would be there to help, as it cleverly recharges from fuel every chance it gets, no not get stuck in an one-way uphill alley with empty battery, that would suck.

    This is something I’d buy over a pure EV. My only wish would be slightly better EV only range which would require a larger battery and add more weight to the vehicle unfortunately, but also a way for the gas engine to recharge the battery internally while driving in gas only mode. Great review!

    • @GeorgeOrwell-tp8dw
      @GeorgeOrwell-tp8dw 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Bad idea for the vehicle. It adds weight, and it increases the range. MB (no car manufacturer) wants more range than this. At 50 miles, you will occasionally be required to run the gas motor. At 100 miles, it maybe 6 months. Bad for the gas, bad for the motor, bad for the fuel pump. You need the ICE engine to run occasionally for this to work

For everyday driving, It is an objectively better experience, and, MUCH easier to maintain than an ICE vehicle. ............... A much better option is the 450h+ "F" Sport bu Lexus...it is faster @ 5.5 sec 0 to 60 (Via road and track) however the Lexus has a " Adaptive Suspension " Stiffens in the curves and Softens on the highway...and unlike the Mercedes No Freak'n air bag that are notorious for Reliability issues....You will make 17Kjust driving the 450h+ "F " Sport off the lot!
    Thoughts on the Lexus * 450h+ “F” Sport NX:
    .......Although the 450h+ "F" Sport is VERY quick (big elec batt assist out of hole elec chirps all wheels) * Note: there is No dog Turbo so NEVER a time lag to spool up.....This vehicle is Naturally Aspirated!......it was Not the added speed I was after but rather, the OPTIONS: i.e. to use NO Freak'n Gas.... at all..... however, if need be, use regular & in Hybred mode you get .......*Yep! * 89 miles of eMPG that is huge!!!!....My thought is NOT to use the polluting oil consuming, maintenance monster ICE. ( I do however fire it once every two months for about 1 mile Jus' to keep the Fluids circulating ad gaskets moist. Change the OIL every year even though there is VERY little use as Oil deteriorates.....At this RATE the ICE will be virtually Brand new in years to come....GREAT TO HAVE A BACKUP!.....This is why I mentioned the 450h+ F Sport is the finest built vehicle! *~*~*~ RUN.........D0-Not walk to the NX 450h+ "F" Sport.....My wife has the new RX 350 and much firmer ride requires Freak'n gas and simply pushing around more mass for no reason...the 450h+ "F" sport has increased in re-Sale Value by 13K!!! / econ 101. “NX” 450h+ “F” Sport is the VERY BEST....(See Below: NX 450h+ “F” Sport is quick with torque out of the hole & no slouch at 0-60 in 5.5 Sec...and with Electric only 47 miles with plug in to house hold 120 Volt, & 89 miles per gallon, Reg Gas in EV combined mode Sadly, the 450h+ “F” was only available in California and Florida, Smog compliant states and Lexus RELIABILITY and Re-Sale! VERY very Limited, so econ 101 makes this car go up in price are selling for $68,000 USED with 7K miles at this writing.....(if you can find one!, especially the "F" Sport 450h+). All wheel drive with adaptive suspension: Unlike 98% of vehicles where you loose your Proverbial when you drive them off the lot. So, " ~*~*~*RUN Do-Not walk to the NX 450h+ "F" Sport! ... . Even When you open and close the Doors they are VERY Solid and hace a Compression / air sound...very nice. AND MADE EXCLUSIVELY IN: *JAPAN! ...Note the Heads Up display on the windshield W/8” & 14” Info on Dash board with Crystal Clear display on both, alone makes the Lexus better........Mine is In Atomic Silver Glows in the Sun Light with Lil" grey / Gold metal flake" and same Circut Red interior.. but with Electric battery...Has 306 Horse power 0 to 60 in 5.6 sec (Via Road and track at drag strip!.) ** BIG NOTE: This model DOES- NOT have a TURBO...But rather, a Naturally aspirated / Carb...........(important because it is well known that TURBOS stress engines)...SEE: th-cam.com/video/_xYnXRqheoI/w-d-xo.html ...ON Turbo issues = Very Bad!..... I use Electricity exclusively non combustion! Simply said: see euro cars shop time & inevitable “ Check Engine Light CONTINUALLY!!....this car combines the Elec Batt and engine to achieve 89 miles per Gallon ( Uses 87% octane / Regular gas according to user manual) in Hybred mode with HIGH torq, And VERY quick out of the hole....*Jus' blew the doors off a 735i beeemer...albeit for only a block ...( I am no dummy, a V8 will eventually pass many cars in the long dist. Canada is Union Shop, Like USA Union shops...no one gets fired.... for a hang over and bad work??? maybe)..... However, Lexus is Far more reliable...Far better Re-Sale that Euro beemers or mercedes (Check Engine Light Gucci headache) .!... IF YOU CAN FIND ONE ANYWHERE do grab it!......"econ 101 / Supply & Demand" .....Has (3) elec. motors gett'n 0 to 60 in 5.6 sec (road and track) HIGH torque QUICK out of Hole!......~*~*Never EVER have I used gas * but highly comforting to have the option..... gett'n 47+ miles per 120 Volt charge (real world driving my experience.)....Almost Silent operation in elec....So do your research, PLEASE......as this is Far better than any European beemer, mercedes and korean etc. All those are depreciating the moment you drive off the lot & simple oil change / maintenance are extremely costly. The aforementioned Euros …....And are UNRELIABLE and get BAD Gas Mileage to say nothing of the: GAS HOG unproven G 70, & RDX not worth mentioning. Z Best of the BEST F Sport 450h+ ! ….One more thing, Jus' a heads up!......My wife drives the RX 2020 model...Consider putting Michelin's at $1000.00 0n / @ ebay deal is out the door and balanced......... on your NX 450h+ F Sport............ replace the Idiot Run Flats that the dealer wants a $1200.00 extra for warr because like me, You WILL eventually get a flat and the Run your WALLET Flats are required to replace??? are you freak'n kidding????....Michelin's primacy same size &......Far and away EVEN a much smoother ride, Shissh, Do Not tell my wife ...even smoother than her 2020 RX 350....because My "F" Sport has the added "Adaptive Suspension" along with lower center of gravity because of Large battery centered Low...+ Soft no roll stabil ride, Much better ride than the HARD Run Flat Bridgestones that come stock. I Carry a Batt. quality inflator ( DeWalt 20V MAX Corded/Cordless Air Inflator ) and string tar impregnated rope insert-er and Do-Not wait for AAA. 2) This vehicle performance is not good for winter environments ( need to heat up the battery and performance below normal hwy speeds only with less mileage range)
    3) This vehicle will be pain to fix down the road ( It is complex with cooling technology, it is complex in terms of endurance with electric components, etc..)
    4) This vehicle like others is not like Lexus RX hybrid performance
    Etc…

    With the Lexus 450h + and Rav4 Prime you have about 220 hp with the two electric motors. I wonder why luxury car makers are not also putting as much EV hp in their PHEV’s as Toyota does. I’m sure the Lexus isn’t in the same league as this Mercedes, but it’s efficient in EV and HV mode so I think it accomplishes the mission of the hybrid better than the competition. Also, if you stomp on the accelerator the engine will not come on which I like.
