- 'Chega de Saudade' (No More Blues) is considered to be the first 'Bossa Nova', the famous Brazilian rhythm. The American trumpeter, composer, arranger, singer, percussionist and bandleader Dizzy Gillespie (1917-1993) and his quintet perform the delightful composition written by the Brazilian composer, arranger, singer, guitarist, pianist and flutist Tom Jobim (1927-1994), with lyrics by the Brazilian poet, composer, guitarist and singer Vinicius de Moraes (1913-1980) in the mid 50's.
Recorded live on the TV program 'Jazz 625', presented by Humphrey Lyttelton, August, 1966.
The Dizzy Gillespie Quintet:
Dizzy Gillespie, trumpet, percussion
James Moody, sax
Kenny Barron, piano
Christopher White, bass
Rudy Collins, drums

Original lyrics in Brazilian Portuguese:
Vai, minha tristeza e diz a ela
apertado assim, colado assim, calado assim
Abraços e beijinhos e carinhos sem ter fim
Que é pra acabar com esse negócio de viver longe de mim...
Não quero mais esse negócio de você viver assim...
Vamos deixar desse negócio de você viver sem mim... - เพลง
Quando músicos de jazz de primeira categoria resolvem tocar Bossa Nova, com liberdade para solos e improvisos, o resultado é sempre espetacular.
Christopher White is an underrated bass player. Never gets a mention, so I'm giving him a shout out !!
Agree. The amazing little shift in energy from the bass when James Moody starts stirring it up round about 4:30. Whoooaaaa
CHEGA DE SAUDADE, AUTORES VINICIUS DE MORAES E TOM JOBIM, PRIMEIRA MÚSICA DA BOSSA-NOVA, GRANDE OBRA MUSICAL, LINDA INTERPRETAÇÃO E APRESENTAÇÃO. PARABENIZO. ABRAÇOS CORDIAIS.
Be-bop + bossa nova = genius
That's the math... 🙂
Inoubliable Dizzy
This is one of the best jazz performances I have ever seen. Ask anyone familiar with the matter who the best jazz trumpet player of all times is, and the answer will leave no doubt - it is Dizzy Gillespie. No one could come even close.
Sempre volto para escutar essa apresentação 🇧🇷❤
this is one of the most brilliant things i’ve ever had the fortune of watching

Wonderful. Gillespie's strong rhythm and sweet sound on his horn!
What a solid bassist! they are killin'
I love how, at about 3:45, Dizzy hits a note so high, he has to take a physical step back to recover, then he hits it again and goes on higher. What a showman.
I saw Gillespie in 1971. I never forgot that...
I love Dizzy's little Samba shuffle at the top. How can anyone not love this guy?
One of the best versions I've heard

@@joegartner7736 You are lucky you are in the age of You Tube!!
Back in the day (1965) we caught Diz and James with Chris and Rudy at the Jazz Gallery on St. Marks in the East Village but I think Lalo was on piano.
It always gets me at the end when Diz and Moody hang onto that note in a game of chicken... and Diz pulls out two seconds before James and James wins!
Omg James and Dizzy such a duo. Thanks
You're very welcome, Françoise, God bless you
Superb performance, even in the bossa part i have the feeling of swing.
Querido Dizzy, fantástica version. Perfectamente complementado. Esto es lo mejor en ritmo de jazz. Glorioso !!!

Anyone know the brand of Dizzy's eyeglasses?
What a pity that Gillespie could not keep cheeks tight :,-)
He told that he couldn't afford to pay a teacher, but he wanted to play so badly that he just started blowing his horn anyway, and guess what: he ended up as one of the greatest jazz trumpet players of all time, even with those big cheeks...
My music teacher used to say "Dizzy plays all wrong, but man he plays all right!"
Too fast.
Top brass pentagon? fII me1 ..this is the top brass!!
