- In this episode, the team take our Grandad on an adventure through the Crinan Canal, in the West of Scotland.
This canal connects the Hebrides to the Firth of Clyde, and has been used by various vessels, including Clyde Puffers, and even military submarines for 200 years!

The reservoir you passed by to your right is called Loch a’ Bharain which is an impounding reservoir, it’s actually one of 16 reservoirs that feed the canal, all the other reservoirs are hidden away up in the hills to your left at Dunardry and are much larger in size and water storage capacity, the main reservoirs are Loch Clachaig, An Locha Cham, Gleann Loch, Loch na Faoliinn, Daill Loch, Loch an Add, Loch na Bric, Loch Dubh, Loch nam Breac Buidhe, Loch Coille, Loch an Duin, Loch Mhic Aoidh and more.
The highest point of the canal is 21m above sea level
The canal was built in 1801 by the navvies from Ireland, designed and led by Scottish engineers such as Thomas Telford, James Watt and John Rennie.
The old stone building that you looked at and said that might have been a boat house, you are correct, that is the remains of what used to be the Linnet Shed, a shed where a 300 passenger steam ship called the Linnet was kept for her annual overhaul over the winter period.
