Imo, this is why the wild card game in Buffalo shouldn't have been postponed by one day. The Bills 31-17 win over the Steelers was unremarkable and will be quickly forgotten in time. But if that same game unfolded in the middle of a blizzard as originally scheduled, it would have been remembered for generations based primarily off of the weather.
It's why other routine games become immortalized because of extreme snow, such as Packers/Bucs in 1985, Eagles/Lions in 2011, and Bills/Colts in 2017.

I played high school football in Spokane, WA and college football in Los Angeles, CA. The biggest "Woahs" I got from my teammates had to do with the stories about playing in up to a foot of snow. To play in the snow was by far one of my favorite experiences; however, playing in the bitter cold is an entirely different beast...the stinging and pain is unbelievable.

You can see the weather advantage in Tampa a lot. When teams come down to us to play USF or the Bucs they usually struggle in August/September because it is hot as hell and extremely humid due to it being the peak of summer for us.
USF looks super fast because they are just conditioned more for the heat, the NFL usually highlights the surface temp of the field when they cover bucs games.

Phil Dawson also had a specific flag placed in one end of the Browns stadium for him to look at whenever he was kicking field goals, somewhere in the corner near an open space. He knew that particular one was blowing the wind in the direction he'd be trying to battle out on the field because none of the other ones went the same way along the lake.

There’s something about seeing men overcome the most indomitable force there is(mother nature) that makes the working man get inspired. People will always respect hard work. The men who work rain or shine. That’s why you see the crowd join the fun and take their shirts off. I’m glad most of the afc still honors the spirit of football outside. You get the true “my city is tougher than your city” feeling that keeps sports alive. Especially in the afc north.

Playing in the right type of snow matters. I played a game in the Bills stadium in which the snow was really hard, so it would get stuck to the bottom of our cleats and make it hard to walk and turned them into ice skates. As an offensive lineman picking up a blitzing LB who just straight bullrushed into me ended with me on my butt a few times because I had no traction. Traction is key to good blocking and hard snow can ruin that. But fresh soft snow is amazing because it doesn't stick to you and is nice to land on and is just an amazing atmosphere to be playing in. But even with hard snow it was kind if breath taking being in an NFL stadium with snow falling was surreal. It's a precious memory even though we got dropped on our head

The wind is real! I moved to Canada and I have been in -40 without the wind and you don’t even notice it. It’s chill! It’s the MOMENT there’s wind it becomes unbearable and cuts through you. The worst I’ve ever felt the cold was playing in -2 C in Ireland on a windy day on a wet field. That shit just murdered me for two days.
Oddly I think the rain would be a weird advantage for a hypothetical London team in the NFL. England gets way more rain than most of America, so a team like the dolphins would be at a real disadvantage

    • @shawnanderson6313
      @shawnanderson6313 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I think the other thing people like about weather games is just the spectacle of them. It's so much fun seeing players running around in the Snow or even slipping and sliding through the rain because most football games, nevermind most sports games in general, don't get that experience. This leads to the most memorable games in football, and sometimes even some of the most historic moments in sports at the same time. The Tuck Rule game is a very well known moment, but I feel like the fact that it was happening in the middle of a snowstorm up in Massachusetts is what gave it the setting of its legendary status. Or look at that 2017 Colts-Bills game that helped Buffalo eventually end their playoff drought. Heck, arguably one of the most well known games in NFL history is named after one of the weather conditions: The 1988 NFC Divisional Round game in Chicago, better known as The Fog Bowl. It helps to add a storyline to the games, and is one of the few things the NFL can't control, no matter what they do.

The most dangerous time to drive in the rain is when it first starts to fall because all the dust and oils lift off the surface, making it very slick. Once all that cruft has been washed away, except for rare situations there's not much difference between driving on wet and dry roads.
As a QB in my day, I found the same to be true of footballs. Once they're "washed off," your grip actually _improves,_ even over a dry ball (dusty/dirty == slicker than mildly wet). There's a reason QBs lick their fingers.
All bets are off, though, when the weather gets extreme.

Leather footballs are actually meant to get more grippy in rainy conditions due to the moisture management if it has been prepped properly. I work with NFL balls a lot and making sure a ball performs in wet conditions is a huge part of the process. It’s more of an issue for receivers who have a hard time catching the ball when it’s coming at high speeds, even with leather palm gloves.

He'd give the visiting teams heating benches, but not his own players, and the players seemed to embrace the philosophy. Regardless of going undefeated and winning their conference. Being an Auburn fan it reminds me of the ‘04 season when we did the same thing and got left out the natty. I would like to mention that MLB games get postponed or put up the roof because it is highly dangerous for the players to play through wet dirt. Football players can because its mostly grass covering the dirt. Its why the tarp covers the dirt and not the grass in the outfield.

As a life long saints fan and watching Drew Brees play most my life, I would say yes there is a definite difference. My saints, a dome team, always underperformed in the cold weather and snow. I remember specifically Seahawks and Eagle playoff games Drew didn’t perform up to his usual standard

Good content! SoFi Stadium isn’t a “Dome” though. The roof is hovering above the field. It’s an open air stadium.

I’d take snow and really cold over cold and wet however. My worst every experience in football was 30° rain and mud, it was awful, way worse then playing even negative wind chill games.

I was at the Bills Steelers game and it was absolute magic. The snow wasnt 100% cleared. the snow was parallel with my seat. It was legit imposible to sit down. My seat was covered allegedly but a couple other season ticket holders took care of the section and got all our seats cleared.

The NHL does NOT play exclusively indoors. The Winter Classic is outside.
I was in Ann Arbor, at the big house in 2014 to watch the Detroit Red Wings play the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was cold af. If I remember correctly it was in the low teens. What an awesome experience. Unfortunately Toronto won 3-2 🫤.
