Thank you for this video! I just got a used ltz400 and was making the noise. The stock tensioner is all the way out. So I'm doing what you did until I can replace the chain.
How about putting a little shim on the internal tensioner's spring which would give it additional preload? Surely that would also push the tensioner's plunger more against the chains guide limiting the rattle. Something to try i guess.
I'm going to do this to my self adjusting CCT on my Honda CB500S as its a common fault with them and they don't make an after market ones or manual adjusting ones. Thanks for your video to show its possible.
Perfect, mine is doing the same noise! How many time do you think the chain lasts? My quad has 10 years and I don't know if the previous owners have replaced it
That was a really smart way to get rid of the noise, I may even use it cause Im looking at the same issue with my 04 at the moment. My only concern is, what if theres a reason the tensioner failed or whatever. Maybe Suzuki designed the tensioner to only do so much to notify you when there is something else wrong, like maybe the chain itself needs replaced. Im not discrediting you, this was a good video, but I feel like curing the symptoms won't get rid of the actual problem if there is any.
+Josh Suriano i totally understand where your coming from. The problem with this cam chain tensioner is it did not extend all the way out to keep the chain tight. Once I got it out I could pull it farther out but it would not go on its own. the spring had failed in it and I looked and a lot of people had the same problem. I checked the chain and it was fine so that's why i made the manual one.
I put a Krieger manual cam chain tensioner in a KLX300 but I sold it before a few months after doing the work. I'd really like to see how well this held up over time.
ok originally, I thought that I had some timing chain issues, but I took out the tensioner at first but then I put it back in and it retightened my chain. So I started it up, it is currently running but I still here something making noise in the engine, and I think I know what it is, It's my valves, they need to be adjusted. Now my question is, will that noise stop because It's the same noise as what your four wheeler was doing, I have the exact same four wheeler as you, 2003 Suzuki z400
brandon rhodes sorry so late. yes if you already checked the cam chain and you think that is not the one making the noise you should check the valves. My other quad was making the same sorta noise and I adjusted the valves and its quite now.
So this will work for a drz400? I'm buying a drz on the weekend and I already know it hasn't got the manual CCT yet, just the stock auto. Thanks in Advance :)
Yes I did I ended up having to replace cam chain and then I had to replace water pump because it was not working causing noise when engine was overheating
My kfx400 sounds like it has a little rattle on the cam chain when I hear it idle, if I buy that thing online you were talking about to adjust it can I get it fixed? @Smightification
Great video man! Im trading a guy for a nice z400 and backed out of the deal bc of that sound...i think. I recorded it with a voice recorser app.. would you give it a listen? I can email the audio file.
Smightification the audio file from my voice recorder wont upload.. its not an accepted file type. I uploaded a video but its not as good. Any advise is appreciated!
Turn it so it sucks the arm all the way in then install it into the motor then let it unwind it's self but never try to force it in with the arm fully extended
Didn't read any of the other comments that folks made about it but I for one appreciate it i bought a used kfx 400 theyre an ltz with a different name it was ticking n i was sick worried i was gonna haft to buy a motor no more ticking n a fairly easy fix thks

handy video dude, i need to do this to both o my DRZ400's ;-)
You just have to tap it out to 7/16 , no drilling involved !

Glad to be a help!

Nice job! I saved your video to my favorites. I may get a DRZ400S dual sport...
Awesome! thanks for watching!
Well done on that man, have you done many other tutorials on the DRZ engine?

Thank you!! Very helpful!
+Vajda Nándor thx for watching

Sorted sweet pal. Nice 1.
Acct with a new chain ? Or manual mcct with a new chain ????
Regular washer or lock? Great vid. Thanks!
+Mary C (White Eyelashes) i had both on a flat and a lock
I think it's best to replace the timing chain
So this will work for a drz400? I'm buying a drz on the weekend and I already know it hasn't got the manual CCT yet, just the stock auto.
Thanks in Advance :)
yup this will work
Awesome. Thanks big help!
any time man :)
Thank god I'm a cnc machinist
How's it going? The tensioner is the same or you changed the chain
not sure ended up selling the quad after a bit to get something different.
Carriage bolt adds 5 horsepower ;)
Did that ticking noise get louder before when you put motor under a load ?
mostly heard it when it was idling. the pipe was to loud to hear it when you were running it
Mine has a knocking noise but only after about 30 mins of riding it
Dolbytractorhd I have the same thing, did you ever figure out what your problem was?
Yes I did I ended up having to replace cam chain and then I had to replace water pump because it was not working causing noise when engine was overheating
My kfx400 sounds like it has a little rattle on the cam chain when I hear it idle, if I buy that thing online you were talking about to adjust it can I get it fixed? @Smightification
if its the cam chain yes you can buy a manual cam chain tensioner and adjust it the same way i did on the video.
You can get these on line now for $12...
how long of a bolt did you use...??? would 4 inch work..???
a 4" or a 6" you might get away with
What size bolt?
Nice

yourleaderslie just upload it to TH-cam

i commented on your video
i bought two drz new and they both sound like they are chewing on marbles.... they just sound that way
Will it be alright to run it for a little bit while is making the noise
+bkbooher it will just wear faster and has a chance of getting too lose and jumping a tooth
Genius
I'm currently installing a CCT do I push it in all the way and it'll adjust on its own?
Turn it so it sucks the arm all the way in then install it into the motor then let it unwind it's self but never try to force it in with the arm fully extended
Thank you very much!!
welcome hope it goes well !
My LTZ is making that noise. I checked the tensioner and found it fully extended. Would you add your mod or get a new chain??
DRX Customs you need a new chain asap
If I replaced my automatic tensioner with the manual, do I need to adjust the timing?
No as long as the chain didn't hop a tooth
Smightification is there anything that would suggest the chain skipped a tooth? Or is that something I would just need to check?
If it's not running right. If it skipped a tooth it wouldnt run right the timing would be off
Smightification alright thank you!!
@@brendenkohan27 count the timing chains pins ... its 15 i believe .... there are videos on youtube showing you how
NICE
Did it end up leaking when you installed it
nope didn't have any problems with it
Thank you Sir.
Metric screw? I number
you should get a MANUAL cam chain tensioner.... way more easy to ajust
Didn't read any of the other comments that folks made about it but I for one appreciate it i bought a used kfx 400 theyre an ltz with a different name it was ticking n i was sick worried i was gonna haft to buy a motor
no more ticking n a fairly easy fix thks
yeah they all had the same motor i know arctic cat used that motor too. Glad to help!
