    Doing this mod, along with a full performance exhaust and jet kit, really gave my Drz400 a good boost in power. The power increase is very noticeable, and the throttle response is much better now too.
    I would definitely recommend this mod. Just keep in mind, you can expect the need for more frequent oil changes with the larger intake hole on airbox.

      What does that have to do with it?

      Just bought a used DRZ it had the 3x3 mod done to it I just noticed. No clue if it’s been rejetted though. Any idea easiest way to find that out? The previous owner didn’t do it so he doesn’t know. And it’s completely stock besides that. Seems to ride fine too

      @@jake2772Is the exhaust popping/back firing at all when letting off the throttle and decelerating? You will need to remove the carburetor and check what size jets you currently have installed.
      I couldn't remember what the stock jet sizes were, but I looked it up for you.
      Stock jetting for Mikuni BSR carburetor found on DRZ400 S/SM models
      Main Jet: 142.5
      Air Jet: 62.5

      @@markalan4026 awesome thank you and no popping/ back firing on decel. Dumb question the numbers you provided will those be written on anything showing that?

    • @markalan4026
      @markalan4026 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jake2772 Not a problem, glad to help. The numbers will be written on the individual brass jets themselves, inside the carburetor. You will need to remove the carburetor float bowl in order to access the jets.
      On the DRZ400 the carburetor is really crammed in there tight, it can be frustrating removing it from the bike if you haven't done it before, so take your time with it.
      There are several how to videos here on TH-cam, I would recommend watching a couple and following along.

    Good video. The only thing I can suggest to you, or anyone else working on Japanese bikes - get a good set of JIS screwdrivers. The fasteners on our bikes aren't Phillips like they might seem at first glance, but rather JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard). This was something an old motorcycle mechanic taught me 20 years ago, and I quit stripping screws on these bikes since then.

    • @CubanRider
      @CubanRider  6 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Thanks man, I wasn't aware of JIS, you taught me something new today.

    • @petereastwood7868
      @petereastwood7868 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      AKJeeper Absolutely! I was going to make the same comment. I bought some great Vessel screwdrivers that have a hex section so that you can use a wrench on them if the screws are tight (
      www.vesseltools.com/handtools/screwdrivers/megadora/930-kit-p123-detail). They work like a charm. Using Phillips screwdrivers on JIS fasteners or on Pozidrive (found on Brit bikes) just chews up the heads and ruins your screwdriver as well, although Philips screwdrivers are junk to begin with, so no real loss there.

    I just completed the mod. Everything was pretty much the way you showed it except getting the carb back in and seating it in the airbox hose was difficult. I finally got it in after coating the housing hose with some oil.
    Well worth it though. That first test ride was a wheelie fest.

  • @kaitlynallen4746
    @kaitlynallen4746 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    5:22 a little note on the float bowl screws (stripped in the video), they strip because people are using philips screwdrivers on them when they are actually JIS screws (Japanese industrial standard). They are similar to philips but ever so slightly different. It doesn't help that they are put on TIGHT when stock and they are made of the softest metal known to mankind.... Anyway, I was able to get mine off without stripping when applying a ton of downward pressure and using a JIS screw driver.

    • @MickH60
      @MickH60 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes yes and yes again, I'm blown away by the amount of people that don't know this... Anyone undoing screws on a Japanese bike, or any bike with phillips style screws should have a set of JIS screwdrivers, I've been using them since the early 1980's, NEVER stripped a screw head and taken out plenty of already damaged ones too.....

      It's a common mod for drz 400 that's why he didnt provide a description.
      Stock drz don't breathe well because of too much airbox restriction. The 3x3 mod is piercing the airbox To increase air flow. In addition To that you need increase fuel intake so that is why he removes the carburator to modify jets

    Very nice! Luciano and I are both looking at getting DRZ400s for dualsporting. He’s on a KLR now and I’m on the Multi, both on TKC80S but limited compared to a lighter bike. Trails we take that are stressful on the big bikes are a joy on my CRF230F, hoping the DRZ lets us get to the trails with ease and handle the off-road better than the big Adventure bikes.

    A stock 400cc dual-sport can't pop a wheelie in 2nd gear? What?! I know it's not a direct comparison (4-stroke vs. 2-stroke), but my 1980 RM 465 could easily pop a wheelie in 4th gear, and it had only 4 gears so that 4th gear was pretty tall. Good video and I'm glad to know there is some option to give this thing some balls.

      Because back in 2000, some dude looked at the air box on an “E” motor and noticed the factory snorkel cutout for that engine is approx 3x3” and figured the “S” motor could somehow benefit from the same sized hole.

    • @ntme9
      @ntme9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@T.S.-eo7my This is funny to read now after 4 years, it doesn't need to be 3x3. I've done extensive Dyno testing and there are benefits well beyond 3x3. Basically the bigger the better. The limiting factor will be the riders concern with getting water/ mud/ dirt build up depending on how and where they ride. You will need a richer needle the more you cut, keep that in mind.

    would this be worth doing to my CCM404DS which uses the DRZ engine albeit, high lift cam, higher compression head and keihin FCR carb? already rated 40bhp... would I get any increase?

    I don't own a DRZ but I am hoping to get one in the future. I am curious all you did was rejet the carb and open the box is that what the 3x3 mod is all about?
    I have seen some video with big performance gains people using the Lectron carb.

    • @CubanRider
      @CubanRider  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's exactly what the 3x3 is about, more air, more fuel. Some people go with a larger carburetor, but this is a cheap and fairly easy mod to get a good amount of power and torque.

    Hey just bought my first bike and its a drz400sm, it has a full yoshi exhaust on it already but it hasnt been rejetted, so i'm tossing up doing the 3x3 with the rejet. Would bike mechanics be able to do this? or is this generally done by bike owners? Not to sure how i would go with pulling apart the bike and then reassembling. Cheers nice video btw!

    • @CubanRider
      @CubanRider  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's normally done by owners, but a trained mechanic would be advisable if you're worried about it. If you're careful and follow the instructions, I'll trust you'll be okay.

    What happens if you jet the carb but don’t do the air box mod? I recently sent my drz in for its first service (600 miles) and while it was there I told them to jet the carb and put a new full yoshi exhaust system on the bike. I don’t know if they did the air box mod and my bike seems to be running a little strange since they did the mods. While riding around 60 mph the bike just shut off and sometimes when I twist the throttle I feel I don’t get an immediate response. Would the airbox feed the system enough air to make it run correctly if the airbox mod wasn’t done after they put the jet kit in? Any info would help. Thanks in advance!

    if the DR-Z i'm going to buy has the keihin 39 already (DRZ S), is so important this mod to have an easy-good-wheelies-bike? it increase more the high-end power or the low-end torque? thanks

    What if u just do the 3x3 and remove the baffle is it same jetting as if you have a slip on

    Great video, but would have been good to have got a bit of commentary as you pulled / disconnected various hoses and cables off, and dismantled the carb, for the first timer bike mechanics like myself.

    You need to get a nice hand impact for the float bowl screws

      Not at all, het JIS screwdrivers, Phillips head drivers chew the screws up, The screws are Japanese Industry Standard, hence JIS, use a JIS screwdriver, you can thank me later.....

    New to the Drz community here. Which jet kit do you recommend after doing this mod?

  • @timothyhaskell8262
    @timothyhaskell8262 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just bought a used drz400s. The previous owner did an airbox mod but it wasn't the common 3×3. He used a 2" hole saw and cut four 2" holes along with the original inlet. The 4 holes together add up to 12.5 square inches plus that other hole. When I asked him what size jet he used he just said "the right one" . Should I buy another airbox and jet kit and start from scratch? The bike runs good, no bogging or pinging.

    • @CubanRider
      @CubanRider  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it runs good then I wouldn't worry, a bit more fuel or air is not going to hurt the bike.

    Hello Cuban Rider, from spain, ya tu sabe :)
    My thing is: Im getting soon the Full system of Yoshimura Exhaust RS-2. And I want to know if should I do that mod to my drz 400 sm 2008. Some people told me I should "recarburate" it, change the air filter to the "K&N", and told me I should take a kit of carburation. I have the stock carburator, Mikuni, same of yours.
    Hope u can help me and recomend me what I should do, because I'm pretty lost right know.
    Sick quality of vide tutorial btw !!

    • @CubanRider
      @CubanRider  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man. I don't have a ton of experience with carburetors (ironic, since where I grew up everything was carbureted), but the re-jetting kits come with different mains that you can swap out depending on your mods. For me it's a 155 main jet since the bike has the stock exhaust and close to sea level, but depending on your altitude and mods yours may be different.

    • @CubanRider
      @CubanRider  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I want to get the K&N air filter eventually since I just do street riding, but I'm not sure if I'm going to have to re-jet. Doing a quick search doing a 3x3 mod with re-jet and a full exhaust are common modifications and an easy way to get some power.
