How To Make a pair of USB over Ethernet adaptors | Ethernet Extension Cable

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 30 ส.ค. 2016
  • This is a DIY video on making a pair of USB to Ethernet adapters. One adapter will convert a USB 2.0 connection to an Ethernet connection and the other will convert from Ethernet connection to USB 2.0 connection.
    With these adapters you will be able to connect an extension cable between them (in the form of an Ethernet Cable). This will allow you to operate your low powered USB 2.0 devices (mouse, keyboard, dongles) over a longer range.
    These adapters will only operate in pairs and are not intended for connecting ethernet devices to USB ports. Doing so may damage your device and/or USB port. Also these will not work over POE devices.
    The maximum length of extension is limited by the power required by the USB 2.0 device. It is therefore recommended to use these adaptors with mice, keyboards, dongles and charge cables.
    All products featured in the video are available to purchase from Amazon.

    Thank you for this video! I do have a question though. If I were to plug the ethernet cable adapter into one power line network box, then the other ethernet adapter into the other power line network box, would I be able to communicate a usb device through my power outlets? For example, a printer, into the adapter through the power line network boxes, into the other adapter, then to my computer. I guess what I need to figure out is if those power line network boxes output data the same way it receives it....

    • @ryantechreviews7333

      Thank you for you comment. In answer to your question, this method will not work to send USB over a power line adaptor. The reason for this is because the power line adaptor manages network activity and will not understand USB data. My method only makes use of the ethernet cable for its twisted pairs, there is no conversion of data involved. I have tested this for you and the USB device no recognized error is shown (not due to cable length). I hope you can find an alternate solution to your problem

    The red voltage line and black ground line are impossible to fit into a standard ethernet pin holes! Nice slide of hand pinning them out of frame. I had to strip the red and black wires more to fit them into the pin holes. Unfortunately I don't have a plug so I can't check to see if it will actually work, but I am definitely going to play with this until I get it to work.

    What about creating USB lane alongside Ethernet? Both use 4 wires, single Ethernet cable should be enough - I'm sure it's possible electrically, what about cross-talk / interference ?

    • @WarayF1
      @WarayF1 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right. Crosstalk won't be a problem as long as USB data and 5V power are using twisted pairs from the ethernet (USB D-/D+ using brown/brown-white from ethernet, etc..). Better yet have a different 5V supply at the other end because ethernet wire are thin and low power so not good for carrying low voltage USB power.

    I just connected USB connectors directly on to CAT 5 cable. I doubled up on the +5V and ground. Was able to send webcam over 10 meters with no degradation, using only USB power from computer (Had to be plugged into the highest power USB connector on my puter, but that was the case even when using a 3 meter USB cable.)
    I didn't explore the limits with this, but I'm guessing whatever they are, they will increase using later categories; CAT 5E, 6, etc.
    I dunno why they don't sell USB cables made this way, instead the options only seem to be inline powered extension cable, or USB over ethernet "baluns" (basically what I think they're making in this video.) And actually, I made this cable when the $35 USB 10 meter powered extension cable didn't work.

    • @Flieger46
      @Flieger46 ปีที่แล้ว

      What exactly do you mean with 'doubled up'? E.g. connecting the gnd from the usb to a whole pair (so two cables) of the ethernet instead of just one?

      Hello, Thank you for your question. I am sorry to say that these adaptors will not be able to fulfil that purpose. The device you are looking for has a controller chip which interprets network packets. To build one yourself could be possible, but you'd need to research the circuit that is needed.

  • @JohnDoe-gm5qr
    @JohnDoe-gm5qr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This can't be plugged into a network right? I am assuming that it would not work that way since this appears to be only extending a USB cable. If this is not usable on a network connection, it may be a good idea to mark the cable ends or even use a different color cable for that. I will look and see if I can find 4 wire twisted pair cable. I don't know how much the stuff costs but I am sure it exists. I will do a search and see what I find. It would most likely be a specialty cable.

    • @JohnDoe-gm5qr
      @JohnDoe-gm5qr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I knew it exists, it is Cat 3 cable. It does come in twisted pair too. Most people probably have the flat non twisted pair cable in their walls depending on how old their house is. We have twisted pair cat 3 in our walls but no longer use a landline. The way I see it why should I pay that extra $30 per month just so telemarketers can use it to pester me. I started to use a service known as anonymous call rejection which helped stop a lot of telemarketers. The way it works is if they block their number, they get a message requesting them to allow their number to show on caller ID. If they don't the call will not complete and the phone will not ring on my end (or it would not have if I still had a landline).

      Hello, Yes you can connect a micro USB connection in place of one of the USB type A connections. The connection must then be converted back into a USB connection in order for it to work on your PC. (Do not plug the ethernet connection directly into your PC). You can then set up tethering on your Android for internet access on your PC.

    • @ryantechreviews7333

      You mention you have an Android phone. These have an in built tethering feature that will allow for your share the phones data/ wifi connection over USB (and I think bluetooth also). If you have a micro USB to USB A cable (quite often these come as a data/ charging cable with the phone) simply connect your phone to your PC as you would to transfer files/ slow charge your device. Then in the settings menu on your phone go to "More" -> "Tethering & postable hotspot" -> and toggle on the top option and the USB tether option. You PC should pick up the device and install the necessary drivers to use the phones internet connection.
      Let me know how you get on.

    • @ryantechreviews7333
      @ryantechreviews7333  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The adapters shown here are USB male to Ethernet male.
      These are only used to extend the distance that USB operates over by using the twisted pairs that are present in Ethernet cables.
      What you are after is a converter which can process network packets and send them as voltages through USB. While it is possible to create such a device, it would be far easier to purchase an adapter (I hear the one from Pluggable one is good).
      To make this your own you'd need some good soldering skills and access to parts such as a programmable chip (in order to understand the network packets) and two crystals (to keep the signals in sync). If this is within your ability you can start by searching for a suitable schematic.

      Hello Navneet, Sorry but these adapters do not have the correct protocols for converting USB to ethernet. For this you would require additional circuitry to translate the USB data into network packets. These simply allow for you to connect USB to USB over a longer range by making use of the twisted pairs present in an ethernet cable.

      Thank you for the update on your findings. Increasing the length to 10 metres is quite the result. I believe the voltage is the limiting factor as it degrades down the wire, hence why it does not work with 35 metres. Was the signal carried completely by the utp or was the manufacturer USB connected to it?
