How To Run a Local Network through your Telephone Line
In this video we show you how to use existing telephone extension sockets to network two devices together. This has the benefit of being more stable than a wireless connection without the untidiness of cables running between rooms.
The results show that this method is slightly slower than using an Ethernet cable, but it should be more than sufficient for internet use and other low network activities.

    The red voltage line and black ground line are impossible to fit into a standard ethernet pin holes! Nice slide of hand pinning them out of frame. I had to strip the red and black wires more to fit them into the pin holes. Unfortunately I don't have a plug so I can't check to see if it will actually work, but I am definitely going to play with this until I get it to work.

    I just connected USB connectors directly on to CAT 5 cable. I doubled up on the +5V and ground. Was able to send webcam over 10 meters with no degradation, using only USB power from computer (Had to be plugged into the highest power USB connector on my puter, but that was the case even when using a 3 meter USB cable.) I didn't explore the limits with this, but I'm guessing whatever they are, they will increase using later categories; CAT 5E, 6, etc. I dunno why they don't sell USB cables made this way, instead the options only seem to be inline powered extension cable, or USB over ethernet "baluns" (basically what I think they're making in this video.) And actually, I made this cable when the $35 USB 10 meter powered extension cable didn't work.

    • @Flieger46
      @Flieger46 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What exactly do you mean with 'doubled up'? E.g. connecting the gnd from the usb to a whole pair (so two cables) of the ethernet instead of just one?

    • @kevinjones9586
      @kevinjones9586 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Flieger46 I used one twisted pair for data. Of the 3 remaining twisted pairs, I connected all the solid colors together to form one conductor (5V) and all the striped colors together to form the other conductor (GND). That was to reduce the resistance, hence voltage drop over the +5V supply.

  • @drabusharr

    Nicely done and excellent tutorial . But there is no magic here. Usb can be extended in all cases to 15 ft using USB extension alone. Creator could have taken long USB cord and done same splicing saving crimping and RJ-45 conmectors. Most of us here I assume wanted to use >15 ft extension. I need 50 meters. Ethernet is the way to go because it allows 150 meters but issue will be power to device that is why many usb-ethernet kits require power input (DC5V) at terminal end. I guess POE injectors cannot be used for USB cam and the question is why not just buy a standalone POE cam!

    • @Kuba--ok2eu
      @Kuba--ok2eu ปีที่แล้ว

      I have this question, if, purely theoretically, the camera was powered by, say, a battery (or simply has some sort of power source of its own and there is no need to transmit it via an Ethernet cable) and connect the D+, D- pins after the Ethernet cable, technically speaking, if one were to extend such a cable for, say, 30m, would there be no loss in signal?

    • @Razzman70

      Running USB through the LAN port won't work, as the computer interprets that differently. You'd either have to replace your USB ports, or install a USB PCI card.

  • @cthulpiss
    @cthulpiss 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What about creating USB lane alongside Ethernet? Both use 4 wires, single Ethernet cable should be enough - I'm sure it's possible electrically, what about cross-talk / interference ?

    • @WarayF1
      @WarayF1 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right. Crosstalk won't be a problem as long as USB data and 5V power are using twisted pairs from the ethernet (USB D-/D+ using brown/brown-white from ethernet, etc..). Better yet have a different 5V supply at the other end because ethernet wire are thin and low power so not good for carrying low voltage USB power.
