    What a legend! Love the fact that Daley is so matter of fact about his achievements - before, during and after competing, without being cocky or arrogant. What a calm bloke as well! Thanks Rob for interviewing and sharing.

    Great to see such a legendary athlete maintain his discipline, self-confidence and sense of self-worth, long beyond the fame and fortune of the moments when was famous and holding the medals high :)

    and also great to listen to Daley Thompson. Watched him in action years ago, played the game on the spectrum, awesome to hear him talk about everything.

    I remember admiring Daley Thompson at the L.A. Olympics, as well as just playing the video game on Commodore 64. So good to see you, Daley, right how I imagined you. Strong, smart, hard-working, but above all, with a super tough mind.
    Someone who understand that it's all about improving over yourself, rather than beat your competitors. And the Decathlon is, in some sense, a field that is such a great training for real life, in the sense that it forces you to be versatile, to deal with your weaknesses, instead of becoming a one-trick pony.
    "Practice as it's a competition so you can compete as if it's practice" - worth gold.

    What a great guy. Loved watching him compete back in the day, and it's great to see he's so happy & content with his life.
    Thanks for the memories Daley, you were something special and then some!

    A great guy. One of my all time favourite athletes. A fun fact, Daley is amazing at general knowledge. Saw him in one of those quiz shows on TV and he was absolutely killing it.

      The irony is, hundreds of thousands may remember it. Daley describes it here from his point of view, but he may not even have ever heard 'It's a better one'! But we were all there

    Great interview. But the discus story (30.00) is wrong. He claims here that he threw a personal best in response to Hingsen's performance; he didn't. His third throw was a mediocre 43.38. After that, Hingsen threw over 48m, going back into the lead. Thompson won the Gold on the second day thanks to his great pole vaulting and excellent 400m.

    • @monkey271070
      @monkey271070 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As you are trying to correct, 400m is on the first day not the second day.
      His 3rd throw was 46:56 a pb at the time.
      His first two throws were bad, around 41meters I think.

    • @scrumpymanjack
      @scrumpymanjack หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@monkey271070 Not what the documentary says (with film clips of those performances as evidence) but I'll assume you're correct, for now. Thanks. I'll go back and check again.

    That picture of him still-standing when his competitors are 'stretched-out' on the track - after, the 1982 european championship decathlon, in, athens - sticks in the mind! As if to say 'what? you boys tired? I could do this, again, right, now!'
    His 'finest hour' came in stuttgart - at, the 1986 european championships - when he was defending his title. In, w. germany - the home of hingsen - he 'laid-down-the-law' and showed his competitors who 'the man' was! Special, time for a special, athlete. And, the man is special, too!

    Daley Thompson, the birth of your kids is not your career. The questions was about your Decathlete career.
