People who think athletics in schools is just win at all costs and a macho thing don't understand that athletics - especially individual sports - teaches you your limits. And you learn your limits by LOSING. A whole lot of losing. Also, for 99.9999% of us, we're never going to be world champions or anywhere close. It teaches humility and it teaches exactly what Johnson said: no matter what you think you deserve, no matter that the other guy is a jerk and you're the nice person, no matter that you trained harder or smarter, no matter you had a better diet, and so on, the stopwatch doesn't care. Results always matter. It's a hard lesson in life that it's obvious too many people never learned.

Michael Johnson is the walking (and running) embodiment of resilience, ethics, and values. His ethics in giving back that medal are a lesson for us all. His resilience is from his ability to let go of things that were not in his control and focus on what was in his control. Further compounded with bounding back from a stroke. Trauma and bad luck do not discriminate. Bad things happen to good people all the time. The difference in high performers is how they bounce back from those setbacks. What a champion of a person, let alone an athlete.

Michael is/was an extraordinary athlete and is just as polished in retirement mentally as anyone can be. He did mention something many athletes today, however, don't mind as much as his generation did.
When asked about success, Mike said directly: "...no shortcuts." In order to be seen as the greatest of any sport, you can NOT take shortcuts getting to the top because in the end, your journey will never be truly respected. Apply it to whomever, and always remember the GOATs never took shortcuts.

That was a very fascinating interview! Michael Johnson was absolutely correct when he said that runners are have been very poor at breaking down the sport and how to be successful at "racing". I ran the 100 and 220 yard races back when I was in high school. Sure it was a very long time ago, but I remember just how long those races were as I was running. I always knew that at any given time along the race, that I could sprint, but I also knew that I could not maintain that sprint more than probably 50 yards. If I had a coach at that time that could have explained to me how to use that natural speed, I am positive that I could have gotten much more out of racing at that time and probably could have propelled me into a college looking for performances at very high levels. Unfortunately, we had just the opposite. None of our coaches understood what the proper tools track and field athletes needed to preform at any level, let alone high levels of performances. I make that point because I know there are so many kids that feel that they missed out on being able to preform at the levels that they felt they could, if not for having coaches that understood how to coach/build a high level athlete.

You truly have to be in the right place.

Same here, back in the 70's in the UK athletics at school was very rarely supported by anything other than supervision to make sure you was where you ought to be, beyond that if you were successful then so be it. I ran a whole bunch of events from 100m through to marathon because I was a naturally talented athlete with good raw speed and endurance. I remember running in a regional 200m race and had never ran the event and came second because I 'tied' up a bit in the last 30m, although my raw speed had me in front for 198m- no one ever told me how to run a 200m and I wish someone had (at least) stated 'go out full blast for 10 strides and then relax into the bend, just ease down a little and let your velocity take you around, then as you come into the straight pick things up and push hard in the last 50m'. As an aside my grandson won the local district 200m (for U13) and he told me that he came 3rd in the qualifier and won the final.... he stated that he remembered my advice just before the final began! All sports should get heavy support in schools and post education - keeping the people fit and competitive (in a friendly and respectful way) is important for our communities.

Michael Johnson is truly a champion of sports and life. This is a wonderful interview showing us the ups and downs of an Olympic athlete both on the track and off. He overcame adversity and talks about how hard you have to train and at times just to make little gains. Besides sacrificing to win gold Michael has overcome a stoke and discusses the physical challenge of regaining the use of his left side. This was a great interview and gave some great insights into the toughness of a champion!

Extraordinary, how he spoke to me in the believing in yourself segment. I am 66 and trained and competed at national level with a goal of racing at the olympics. I had complete belief in myself and a fabulous coach who nurtured my talent. But the people closest to me were utter shit. Not only did they not support me, but some actively tried to discourage me from purusing my dream. I have no doubt that having to carry three fridges on my back, the brutal traing, the mental discipline and the constant negative noise, kepat me from realizing my potential. He is absolutely right that you need a foundation to believe in yourself, you need to put in the work, and you also need people around you that support you, even if privately they do not think you can make it. Support does not mean everyone has to believe in your dream. Support means those around you let you have what you need to make the pursuit worthwhile. My coach always said he was not there to motivate us. Motivation had to come wrom within us, or it was not motivation. His role was to provide the conditions for that motivation to take form. Thank you, Mr. Johnson, for your inspiring words.
