Watching Daley Thompson win the Decathlon at the LA '84 Olympic Games got me in love of the Olympic games forever. He was my god, my hero, my dream. I was an 11 years old boy, living in the Andes mountains of Colombia. I attended the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Games in his home city finally fulfilling my dream. Walking into the stadium that Friday afternoon was one of the happiest moments of my life. Thank Daley you for changing my life forever.
I once had the privilege of narrating a short documentary early in his career when his 100m best was 10.51 and he was surprised I knew it. He was a very charming, polite, warm and humble young athlete. I'm one of his biggest fans and it was a real treat to spend a little while in his company. Daley should have been knighted by now ! One of the greatest ever Athletes of our time.
Not really, he did take away a place from a native Englishman. Who was that guy who lost his place, that's who I want to know about! Thompson should have run under an international banner. The arrogance of the English authorities back then was insane.
A real hero back in the day Daley used to travel on the train from Hove I think. He used to be in the bar at Crystal Palace shandy top was our drink . He was a nice guy and a handsome devil watching him hard at work was an inspiration !!!
I am truly honored that Daly Thompson invited me to join his pre 84 Olympic Decathlon meet at UCLA. I qualified for the American Olympic trails and Daly placed me next to him in every running race. Special thanks to Worlds Greatest Athlete ⭐👍 Daly Thompson
Daley was my childhood sporting hero! At the time, he was Britain's greatest ever athlete and is still "up there" nowadays. His 100m and 400m were superb and he did great times, even by today's standards, 40 years later! The crowd were shocking. No doubt, this was down to the colour of Daley's skin, German sporting crowds were notorious for its racism at the time. Not that the British were great, in football we were notorious hooligans, but at least in athletics, a British crowd respected great champions and certainly didn't boo and hiss. Yes, we always cheered our own athletes, but we showed respect to all athletes. This was an absolute treat to watch, again, thanks for the upload!!
It wasn't anything to do with Daley with being black - all to do with the fact that Thompson consistently beat Hingsen and Wentz at major championships. Daley himself took it in good spirits saying afterwards that the German crowd were fair and only cheering for their own athletes and that "I'd like to think that if we ever get those two over here 50 or 60 thousand of us are going to get them!"
Thank you so much for posting this, beautiful to hear Ron Pickering and Stuart Storey's commentary again, and what a great competition from all the decathletes too. Class.
Used to play football with Daley back in the early seventies for Bolney in West Sussex when he was only 15 or so. He was pretty good at that well. Lovely guy and fully deserved everything he worked for won. One of our greatest ever athletes!
I remember seeing Daley play in a pre-cup final charity game at Wembley in the mid-late 80's. He was that good he could have played in the final itself!
Like most people I have never understood why he has never been to knighted they give them out like sweets to athletes now but to a truly great sportsman the best we have ever had just a closed door. This was brilliant 👏 thanks for the memories 😊
I'm 79 years old and I've been involved in sports since I can think. I began at ten years old with amateur boxing and gymnastics. The two most outstanding Olympic athletes of all time, in my opinion, are Eric Heiden and Daly Thompson. Eric, because he absolutely obliterated all the competition and won all the Gold Medals going for his event in speed skating and Daly Thompson because he won Olympic Gold medals back to back against the most stiffest competition. An absolute hero in my book! I also met Siggi Hintz on a number of occasions when I lived in Germany. An absolute gent and very friendly indeed. That's in contrast to your man Hingsen, who I met in Rome, Italy in the late 1980s. He was just so arrogant and full of himself, the arsehole. Make of that what you will. MsG
I remember Daley in one event (maybe Commonwealth games)with Guinness as a sponsor. Daley, being one of the first true athletes, refused to advertise alcohol. At the last minute, a compromise was reached, he wore a label saying " Pure Athletic Genius" Loved watching him 😂
The Decathlon is one of the toughest (if not the toughest) events in athletics, and to win Olympic gold is to be one of the very best in the world. Daley did it with style, grace and humility. He showed his class in his last outing: injured, he could have dropped out, knowing that he couldn't win, but carried on gamely, as he didn't want to ''cheapen'' the new champion's victory. This great man deserves a knighthood if ever a sports star did, why hasn't he received one?
Decathletes are absolute beasts TEN events including: 1500m (1609m is a mile) in the mid 4 minutes 100m in the mid 10 seconds Then there's discus, shot put, javelin, long jump and high jump and MORE lol.
We live in an era where British athletes crumble when the going gets tough, despite all the funding and help they get, but Daley Thompson never got as much help, he relied on his oen ability and sheer will power and character to beat, 3 East Germans, 3 West Germans, and the whole German crowd to beat them all. Whst an absolute legend and hero. Britain's greatest ever athlete.
Great memories, why do people say Usain bolt is the greatest ever. We had superman. I even remember the over head kick goal he scored in a celebrity fa cup final why back.
Daley took it all in good spirits though saying that the crowd were just supporting their own men and that "if we ever get those two (Hingsen and Wentz) back in Britain, I hope 50 or 60 thousand of us are going to get them!"
I often think about our Olympic gold medal athletes from this generation and I find myself asking why Daley has been largely forgotten about today? Look at the other athletes...Seb Coe led our Olympic Bid for 2012 and is now a Lord and Steve Cram is a prominent commentator on the BBC. I think Daley gets forgotten...and for a double gold medallist in the hardest discipline in athletics...that's a real shame.
why do you say that?, To be honest Atheletics would be better if it was just An amateur event a people actually did a real job for a living because as soon as Television takes over and sponsorship comes in then they demand world records therefore the drugs come out - I think there may still be a clip on TH-cam where Ben Johnson is in his 50's running a 60 metres to show how naturally fast he is Also Politics influences sport and the Public wants to be Entertained
Even though he's a great decathlete I was FURIOUS when he wore a t-shirt saying IS The world's 2nd greatest athlete gay? And it was targeted at Carl Lewis, all because of that low act from Thompson, Carl Lewis lost a multi million dollar McDonald's sponsorship deal, Thompson is NOWHERE NEAR IN THE CLASS OF CARL LEWIS!!!
How this great man, probably our greatest ever athlete, has not been knighted is a disgrace.
A great athlete, yes. Your greatest athlete, fair enough. But certainly not mine.
He was awarded the CBE. You do not get honoured twice for the same achievements.
@@budweiser600Meanings don't count. Facts do. That's a fact....!
Maybe the Royal family were too salty because Daley beat their fellow Germans!!!???
@@cleehomes Highly unlikely. The list of nominations is drawn up by the government of the day.

Nice story thanks for sharing

Absolutely agree.
And back then it was a hard slog.
No lottery funding. Just the daily grind on your own.
An amazing man x

@@uutthyu4636 Holy moly, Daley Thompson was a great athlete, but no way was he English born and bred. - Are you insane?
I'm 49 now, when I was a little boy this man was my favourite athlete. He should definitely have been knighted by now!
Definitely Britain's greatest ever athlete!!!! Legendary!!!!

The country was enthralled by his win because Daly is such a great personality too.
Very proud to have met this great man. Daley Thompson is a UK London and Chiswick legend!!👍🙏👏👏👏
Britain’s greatest sports person
Any sport, any era
There should be a programme on tele about this great man for some youngsters to see unsung hero in my book
Great footage of a magical decathlon.. Daley Thompson was a once in a generation athlete.
It's worth noting the excellent level of commentary in this video. Very informed.
An absolute privilege to watch that again and superb commentary.
The greatest all-around Athlete the UK has ever produced 👏

Our man Daley!!! Gonna play Daley's Decathlon now on the ZX Spectrum 😁
Do they sell Quickshot 2 multipacks on Amazon? 😉

10.27 for the 100m in a decathlon nearly 40 years ago; unbelievable.

He is the main man of action meaningful decathlon's and very intelligent Daley Thompson winning by the score.
The only true GOD of the Decathlon! Hail from Greece!
He's so skilled in all of those events.
Never see Decathletes like these lot again. They were really hard men
Possibly Daley's best victory of them all against the West Germans in their own country.
Without a doubt, Daley's 'finest hour ' as a decathlete.🎉😊
What a legend Daley is. I remember watching him in the 84 Olympics when he done that memorable back flip.
TH-cam might be full of rubbish but you do find some gems
Daley Thompson - Legend!

Great stuff 🤙🏼
One of the triumvirate of all time great British athletes along with Seb Coe and Mo Farah.
what a hero!

Steve Redgrave Daley Thompson Chris hoy and more pass him but best ever for me gotta be Jesse Owens
I don't think I have ever heard a crowd barrack an athlete, as with this crowd.

I was in Barcelona Spain when he won second goal in LA
Magnificent
The Man,End of.
Why is this man not Knighted?
It's totally criminal
It's a strange world where we have Sir Mo Farah but not Sir Daley Thompson.
He was seen as a bit of a risk, a loose canon.
He whistled during the National Anthem, big ears hasn't forgotten 😂😂😂😂
Has there ever been a British double Olympic champion and world record holder who hasn't been knighted? Disgraceful.
Have they ever knighted a non Caucasian?
Battle of the juices
what do you mean??
The greatest British athlete ever.
Can anybody tell me if there is a documentary about Jergen Henson. Sorry I cannot finf anything except 16 days of glory
Search Jürgen Hingsen, I think that is the spelling. He's still a big star in Germany.
Stuart Storey = Commentating Legend!
Don't forget that Thompson won a bronze in the sprint relay at this event as well.
These commenter, who have never done any of these. How dare you criticise.
German crowd booing Thompson at the Shot Putt is pretty salty!

That’s because he’s not a pretty white boy!
Why oh why does this man not have a knighthood?????
ubermeister ist richtig...
may we skip da discuzz?
No. We're allowed to be proud of him. As you would be if he was your athlete.
Tunterich Wentz
Torstern vos won the gold in 88 .....steroided right up Daly was fourth but was injured .Vos was a Charisma bypass 😡
u no what this needs? a few more ADDS, gready gready naughty puppy, BAD

WOW - did not know this & wish I still didn't know it. Seems to have been very severe on Carl Lewis, who I also admired for many years.
Lewis lost his Nike deal, and Coca Cola pulled out of a proposed deal, but I haven't found any evidence of a McDonalds deal. Have you got a link?
It was a joke
LMFAOOOOOOOO
WIt Daley wore the shirt
Watching Daley got me into decathlon, a brilliant event and he is a great champion.
Didnt 1008 have a false start or an " injury" to avoid a drugs test?
I wrote this before the video started. I remember it well
he should have won in 84 also
He DID win in 84, it was his most famous victory...
