El Lute belongs to a Spanish ethno-cultural group called "mercheros", with a nomadic way of life similar to the one the Irish Travellers have. Originally, they were ironware merchants and went from one village to another to sell their stuff. The members of this group have always faced discrimination and poverty, and many of them had to leave their traditional areas in Western Spain to look for a better life in Madrid and Barcelona. In the slums of these big cities where they were trying to survive, policemen used to harass them. They also had the worst jobs and the hardest conditions, so crime was the only way out for many of them. Because of that, a lot of mercheros ended up in prison. This is the reason this song is so beautiful and powerful: it doesn't only explain el Lute's story, but thousands of forgotten stories about people who are constantly looked down on by the rest of our society.

Living in Columbus, Ohio back in the late 79s and early 80s, I never heard of Bony M until one day I watched some swing dancing on heard Rivers of Babylon, I liked the music so much, I looked up the group who was singing. I have absolutely fallen in love with Bony M.

It was a time when I was abandoned by my mother (too), and lived in a boarding school on the border of South Africa and Zimbabwe.. I was 'lost' but made it all on my own!
