Abba wrote three versions of Fernando. The first was in Swedish and told the story of lost love. The second was English and told the story of two veterans in the 1910 Mexican Civil War. The third was in Spanish. My father loved this song. He fought as an infantryman on the front lines in three wars. This song makes me cry for him.
I had the great experience of meeting and conversing with Panch Villa's widow. It was in 1971 in Chihuahua City. She was 79 years old. Her name was Maria de la Luz Corral viuda de Villa. She had a powerful voice, joyful and full of confidence. It was memory that I treasure. In her house she had the car in which Panco was assassinated, full of bullet holes.
@NextWorld Pancho said to Luz that he wanted to kill a certain fellow. Luz said to him, NO! he is a good man, Don't do this and he spared the man. After Pancho's death, there were four wives that wanted the big 50 room house. By then the fellow she spared was president of Mexico. Somehow he had heard of this conversation and he granted the house to her.
@NextWorld Thank you, Next, but my part was tiny. These other accounts are just in the historical record. But to share another bit, Pancho and his men were gathering money from business owners and individuals to fund their military operations. That's where he met Luz in her mother's little store. He liked her looks, but most of all, he liked that she was articulate. She was 18 years old, and he proposed marriage. She was the second wife. It is said that he had more than forty "wives." But Luz had a special distinction. She is the only wife who had a marriage certificate. They went to the Catholic priest, who said that Pancho would need to do confession. Panco said that he had committed so many sins and done so many bad deeds that the priest would simply not have time enough to hear it all. The priest then said, "Well, then let's just skip it," and the marriage ceremony proceeded as scheduled. Luz became an important part of the revolution. At one point, for her safety, she went to Cuba briefly, then spent about two years in San Antonio, TX. She spoke to me in good English, which presumably she learned in TX.

My Grandfather always loved this song. When he was on his deathbed, I played this for him, and while he was sick and exhausted, he cried but smiled when he heard what was playing and did his best to sing the words despite being short of breath. I'll forever think of him when I hear this song now. Rest In Peace Grandpa, Francisco Fernando Cabral.

One of the most meaningful, albeit misunderstood songs by abba. Even my old folks think this is a love song about a lad named Fernando. This song makes me think of my grandfather who fought in WW2. "I was so afraid Fernando,...none of us were prepared to die...I am not ashamed to say the roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry...they were shining there for...liberty". So poignant and powerful.

Nowadays metalheads and hard rock fans are open about their love & respect for ABBA. Lemmy in Motörhead and Ritchie Blackmore were both big ABBA fanatics and were open about it, even back in the late 70s. Any rocker that likes ABBA should check out the band Ghost, they are can fill an arena headling these days so it's likely that many of you know of their music. Their discography has so much ABBA inspired pop sorcery mixed with an tradtional late 70s/early 80s heavy metal/hard rock and a hundred other sounds from different eras. Their newest album is recorded at ABBA's old studio and you can hear the same piano as used in Money, Money, Money on two songs on that Ghost album. Spillways is one of those two. Highly recommend. Cheers mate!
I know this opinion is very controversial but I much prefer this song to the Beatles song "She loves you". "Fernando" is about the Mexican revolution. The other one is another love song among hundreds.
Fernando's passing brought me to this song tonight, the night before the Dodgers/Yankees World Series. Despite me being a long time Yankees Fan and also seeing ABBA live in concert when they were still in their prime, I am sad to hear the loss of the Dodger great. I've always loved the song and have always respected Fernando Valenzuela. May he rest in peace. BTW, I was in my 20s when Valenzuela was playing and I also related this song to him also.
After 40years they still make me cry happy tears. Best group ever, the music is eternal....thank you for the joy keep me bringing me❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ABBA FOREVER
I recently turned 59 years old, and my Grandmother, Bless her Heart, entered me into Columbia Records when I was very young. One of the albums was Abba. God Bless You Gram. AWESOME TUNE.
Saw a string quartet concert a few days ago. ABBA songs played in a candlelit church. Cried during the whole concert. So moving. ABBA still spins its magic.
My late sister once said when these two ladies sing, they sounded like ringing bells. But, for me, there's nothing quite like ABBA. Two great divas singing beautifully the high notes backed up by two musicians who composed timeless songs I still enjoy to this day. ABBA will always be my favourite pop group of all time

My grandfather died in October of last year after two years of fighting glioblastoma. He loved ABBA. This was his favorite song. He always admired Benny, said that Benny wrote most of their songs. He got me into ABBA. I miss you grandpa. Rest In Peace.
Ms Erinjohnson my grandpa recently passed. He loved abba and this song is his favorite too! He got me into them as well. I’m singing this at his funeral . Rest In Peace to our grandpas
This song is FORTY FIVE YEARS OLD...absolutely fantastic group never to be surpassed. Their songs were way ahead of its time and sound so fresh and good in 2020...amazing
ABBA has lots of these beautiful classical style songs in their catalogue. ABBA is known for their big wall-of-sound, big unison (third voice) songs, but their most beautiful ones are their more classical ones which they back-off the wall-of-sound and huge third voice chorus.... These more classically inspired songs promote the emotion and beauty. Anni-Frid Lyngstad on lead is heavenly. She has refined vocal vocal skills and has mastered diaphragmatic breathing. Listen to her original 'Fernando' in Swedish, a huge solo hit for her in 1975. It's breathtakingly beautiful. A year later ABBA recorded this English version. Also, a huge hit for ABBA. So this is technically an ABBA cover of Anni-Frid's original Swedish language 'Fernando'. A few very beautiful ABBA songs that have more classical stylings. - One Man One Woman - Andante Andante - When All Is Said And Done - Gonna Sing You My Love Song - Like An Angel Passing Through My Room - Tropical Paradise - I, Wonder - I Let The Music Speak - Our Last Summer The brunette ABBA girl has an incredibly beautiful voice.
@@danbike9 Hi! Yes, indeed! "Andante, Andante", "Our Last Summer", & back to the Latin sound with "Chiquitita" - these are 3 of my faves. You saw where Metallica paid tribute to ABBA in their home country by playing "Dancing Queen", yeah? Said to myself, "Well, I can die now, because I've seen EVERYTHING!". But that just speaks to ABBA's lasting universal appeal. And, of course, there's the HUGE Broadway musical, "Mama Mia!". I think 1 thing that makes them so extraordinary is that their beautiful voices blend & harmonize so well. Listening to them is like strolling through a gorgeous formal garden - every flower, bush, & tree carefully placed to compliment all the others, presenting a perfectly coordinated whole. We're all fortunate to be able to HEAR what that garden SOUNDS like, thanks to ABBA. And thank YOU for your informative comment.
My precious grandma loved ABBA, she was a beautiful swedish woman ❤️ my grandparents took good care of me after my mother died from cancer. Whenever I hear ABBA, I always think of my grandma smiling
I can´t stop crying with this amazing song; reminds me of my lovely daughter, who died in 2020. My pain will last forever, but Abba kind of comforts me.
the fact that there's a perfect ABBA song when you're out with friends, partying with strangers, or when you're alone and in deep thought makes them legendary.
This song reminds of my grandparents. They both fought in the Mexican Revolution from 1910 to 1920. They were separated in the conflict when the train they were on was blown up. My grandmother and grandfather happened to be on opposite ends of the train when the bomb went off. Each thought the other was dead. Two years later they walked past each other on a train platform. They were married for 75 years.
Another masterpiece. The girls voices are wonderful and they are convincing story tellers.Their ability to musically romanticize and connect internationally is really commendable!
This song always makes me cry. That sweet sadness when your life is a long story full of different people, real friendships and choices you've made. It's something that can't be put into words, because there aren't enough of them to describe every moment of your life.
I just cried! Remembering so much but mostly the feelings associated with the time of my youth! Thanks for your wonderful summary of the reminiscing and God blessings to you and your loved ones.
_"Now we're old and grey, Fernando"_ had me choking back tears like never before. Now that I'm in my 50s, my emotions have become supercharged. My manopause notwithstanding, ABBA can at once make one wistful for the past and hopeful for the future.
Semua bermunculan ... 😢
There is just something magical about the way their voices blend together. Very unique! As soon as you hear them you know who it is, like Lennon and McCarthy, a tone, a timbre, a quality like no other. Both girls are excellent in their own right, but together, something very special.
Yeah ABBA's harmonies are unique and distinctive, very special. By the way, i recommend checking out the two sisters (Swedish too) in First Aid Kit, apart from ABBA i think they are the best vocal harmonies I've heard. Search for : First Aid kit live at Polar Music Prize .. They've covered Chiqitita as well

I love Abba, 40 years ago l met my husband and was the first time I ever heard an Abba song. I have been hooked ever since. Fernando has a special meaning. He escaped communism, Romania and when he made it to America he knew he would come to Las Vegas, we worked for the same hotel and casino. The first time he felt real love, that is when he saw me. He told himself that he was going to marry me and spend the rest of his life with me, then he introduced himself and we have been together 40 years. He was on a battle field, people hunting him and his father over many countries, they made it to Italy, then after another year he found a sponsor to America. I was truly blessed when he told me who he was, a very handsome man. I am surprised he didn't have someone else but l guess life brought us half way around the world, we met and have spent our life together. God blessed us both.
Such melody, such harmony. It takes you to a place that does exist except in the melody of that song ???? Some things cannot be explained some things can onky be felt!!!
my mother was diagnosed with cancer 2 years ago, been to ABBA in London over three times now, this song always makes her cry, just he lyrics ' we were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die' hits hards. Love hit song till the end
This song makes me feel so at peace, it's so beautiful. Frida's voice is as warm as the fireplace in front of them, her Swedish version of this song is so lovely as well!
I'm 78 and have been to war in Vietnam as an airborne infantry soldier from 8/66 - 8/67 and by the Grace of God I lived after being wounded. Thanks be to God.
The two ladies of ABBA group are enormously sweet singers. Fernando is their one of the finest songs and it is equally more popular in November 2020.👌👌👍👍
Can you hear the drums, Fernando? I remember long ago another starry night like this In the firelight, Fernando You were humming to yourself and softly strumming your guitar I could hear the distant drums And sounds of bugle calls were coming from afar They were closer now, Fernando Every hour every minute seemed to last eternally I was so afraid, Fernando We were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die And I'm not ashamed to say The roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry There was something in the air that night The stars were bright, Fernando They were shining there for you and me For liberty, Fernando Though I never thought that we could lose There's no regret If I had to do the same again I would, my friend, Fernando If I had to do the same again I would, my friend, Fernando
@@richardlangley4138 this version mentions the Rio Grande. I read that it was about the Mexican Revolution and this supports that although it could be involving the US.
The song's lyrics written by Björn Ulvaeus (ABBA) presents a vision of nostalgia for two veterans reminiscing at the old age on a long-ago battle in which they had participated. Bjorn said: "I wrote all the songs as little stories. 'Fernando' was about two old freedom-fighters from the Mexican Revolution."
My dad's name wasn't Fernando, but still this song hits different since he passed away. Feenando was my very first favourite song and my dad showed me how to play it on the electric organ

i am Mexican and and I am very grateful for this beautiful song that this group composed, the song is inspired by the monologue of a Mexican war veteran who tries to talk with Fernando, his battle partner, and nostalgically reminds him of moments when they participated in the Battle of La Angostura in 1847 in the context of the American War of Intervention, referring to the fact that freedom was finally achieved for Mexico.
I once saw a documentation about Abba like in 2005 and they said the thing with Abba is, that the same sound samples are stacked on each other several times which would lead to the "brilliant" sound!
Dude I'm literally only a few months away from being 18 and I've been listening to Abba since I was like 2 because my moms favorite movie was Mamma Mia. But you're 100000% on point lol
I love this song. I never thought the lyrics are kinda sad, I like how Abba sings about deeper subjects with a lighter melody and bpm. Also they're very poetic.

Any South Africans on here? I'm in my mid 30s now and this song bares so many memories for me as a kid. We would wake up on this song on a Saturday morning and my mother would be in the kitchen cleaning already and preparing the steam bread for the day. She still with us but how I miss those pure beautiful days.
Turning 20 this year and I'm still loving Abba. I was around 4 or 5 yrs old when I first heard Abba songs and it was my grandpa who introduced it to me, and growing up I like to listen to them and now my grandpa is dead. He died way back 2011
With small changes in the lyrics , song could easily be about the Russian Blockade runners. On all Five Poles and running lights blacked out. The battle shock effect is handled well, without screaming shells, etc Great song.
I turned 30 in october, ABBA was a special thing my grandpa and I shared starting from when I was very young too. he passed away late in 2008. kindred souls!
My grandfather didnt know anything about Abba, but he enjoyed Tennese Ernie Ford, and Eddie Arnold. My grandfather loved me unconditionally,he died of a heart attack at 88.
Never really was an Abba fan, appreciated their skill as a cut above normal pop bands rather than loved them - but this song is on a whole different level.

If there's a list of songs that immediately give the listener pause, this must be at the top of that list. Everything, from the voices, the orchestration, to the lyrics cause one to get lost in the moment. Fernando, IMHO, is a masterpiece for the ages.
Up until this point they produced catchy tunes and were well liked. This song launched them into the musical stratosphere and 45 years later and counting it’s still breathtakingly good.

@@janeslater8004 That's what I was gonna say: Closer to 50 years. The fact that people in the 2020s still dig the song says a lot about the timelessness of the melody. There were zero songs I gave a flip about from 50 years earlier when I was young. But we're talking about the 1920s through to the 50s -- music in those eras was a wholly different animal from the 70s-90s, naturally.

I know this opinion is very controversial but I much prefer this song to the Beatles song "She loves you". "Fernando" is about the Mexican revolution. The other one is another love song among hundreds.
As a little kid growing up during Fernandomania in Los Angeles, I thought this song was written for Fernando Valenzuela. RIP.

@@douglascutler1037 Hi! Absolutely! One can close one's eyes & almost hear the crackling fire & the cannon in the distance. Thanks for your comment.
- One Man One Woman
- Andante Andante
- When All Is Said And Done
- Gonna Sing You My Love Song
- Like An Angel Passing Through My Room
- Tropical Paradise
- I, Wonder
- I Let The Music Speak
- Our Last Summer
The brunette ABBA girl has an incredibly beautiful voice.
Chiquitita takes that cake, but this song is pretty close.

the fact that there's a perfect ABBA song when you're out with friends, partying with strangers, or when you're alone and in deep thought makes them legendary.

If there's a list of songs that immediately give the listener pause, this must be at the top of that list. Everything, from the voices, the orchestration, to the lyrics cause one to get lost in the moment. Fernando, IMHO, is a masterpiece for the ages.
This was my mother’s favorite song. I lost her last year due to Parkinson’s. May she rest in peace. 🕊️

The first song I ever heard by ABBA, 1976. Still my favorite and I still love ABBA.
They are the best
Technically this is a 1975 song.
Лучше их нету и не будет. Обожаю эту группу.Какие голоса ,просто отдыхаешь и наслаждаешься. Слушать и слушать хочеться
@@СветланаВикторовна-з9г9о Конечно.
Up until this point they produced catchy tunes and were well liked. This song launched them into the musical stratosphere and 45 years later and counting it’s still breathtakingly good.
I am overwhelmed anyone even read my post. I feel for you all as my son and I know how hard it is to go through anything. Believe me, we know. Music sets the stage and tone to help us. Nor just the hard times, but, hum, everything!. Thank you! 😘
❤
I totally concur. Love them.
Rip Fernando Valenzuela
Thank my parents for showing us kids ABBA -
Me and my sister used to sing and dance to this song! We wanted to be ABBA soooo bad 😊😊😊😊

Qué chulada 👍
SWET LOVE FOREVER.
Saludos, compatriota, yo tengo 25 e igualmente disfruto esta bella obra, de mis favoritas junto a The Winner Takes It All y Waterloo...
I love how music has the power to make you feel nostalgic for events in your life that never happened. Out of all of the songs I've heard in my life, this song is easily one of the most powerful in that regard.

Freedom! Forever!
That group was a phenomina absolutely out of this world.
Phenominoodle...?
C'était un groupe phénoménal qui n'a pas été égalé à ce jour.
It was one of the group we ever listen, sing,... Merveillous ins't enough. Waooh !!! I love them end i listen Abba every day.
From France
aiduba974 Salut! Je parle français, mais je suis italienne😄😄
Saw an Abba tribute band. Best concert I’ve ever been to. Can’t imagine actually seeing them. They are Godlike! Nothing even comes close to Abba. They’re in a genre of one.
I saw a cover band in Colorado. They were called "Bjorn Again".
About a decade ago some music industry people offered ABBA a billion dollars (250m each) to do a 100 concert tour. They turned it down.
Genre of one definitely ❣️
They have a new album called Voyage coming out in a couple weeks. I guess they are doing two shows in the UK soon. Crazy after all these years
The harmonies are wonderful, but the subtle details and iconic expressions in Frida's vocals in the first verse just can't be beaten.
Absolutely true !!! ❤❤👍👍
Ear Candy of the highest caliber !
Anni Frid sings with such pure emotion, that's one of the things that elevates this song.
@@creativeliberdade Yes!
The most beautiful song ever written.
For Abba, absolutely.
Easily one of the best songs ever wrote. Voices of angels.
It's forty years later, and the chorus of this song still sends wonderful chills down my spine -- ¡Viva ABBA!
long lives for them

@@simonallen2604 Don't forget about Benny and Bjorn.. I will not lie Benny is hot.
Its 48 years ago. It was 1975 now 2023
@@janeslater8004 That's what I was gonna say: Closer to 50 years.
Frida could have easily chose to sing in another area of music. ( opera ) Thank god she chose to sing with Abba so the entire world could hear her amazing voice.
