It's based on the bible. It's about Israel being beaten by Babylon. Psalm 137:1 KING JAMES VERSION By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. {137:2} We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. {137:3} For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. {137:4} How shall we sing the LORD'S song in a strange land? {137:5} If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. {137:6} If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy. {137:7} Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof. {137:8} O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us. {137:9} Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.
@@sole_bragz6060 It's normal to think that. I use to think that as well and then I encountered those lines in the Bible. So, it is more like cultural appropriation.

A beautiful, uplifting song. The warm applause at the beginning tells you how already appreciative of the song the audience was. What I recall about the song is that in 1978/79 it was played a few times at friends’ birthday parties (as pop music ideal for nine and ten-year-olds) as well as at some social events like car boot sales. It’s just so cheery. But folk back then got the biblical references. And even today this song is an antidote to the grimness that’s so pervasive in popular entertainment today.
Not sure I would say uplifting. It is a lamentation sung by the people of Israel moving into Babylonian captivity, asking themselves how it be possible to sing praises ever again. It is very sad.

I was born in '76. I remember this song from when I was little and it was played on the radio. I'm also pretty sure that my parents had the record, too which is why I know it so well and loved it back then. For some TOTALLY random reason it just popped in my head just now, after all this time?! Weird. It's so odd hearing it now when I'm 46, and actually hearing the words and understanding them. Esp now I've just become a Christian 3yrs ago almost (baptised last year.) So I'm like, "Oh, that's what it's (the song,) all about." Amazing song!! And wow their voices are so good!! 😍❤
That's a great story! Congrats on finding Jesus! I'm a bit younger, but I had the same thing happen with the song Baba Yetu from the game Civilization 4. I liked the song, but forgot about it. Then I found it again after converting, and come to find out, the lyrics are the Lord's prayer in Swahili. It gave a whole new meaning to the song and I praise God for it!
@@BigSunshine55 TY! And yes, it's surprising (to me,) *just how many* songs are actually about God or biblical times, that I've heard and listened to time and again and it's only now I'm a Christian I recognise that at all! I suppose the whole "Eyes to see and ears to listen," couldn't be truer, eh? 😉

Many people dont believe in God, they want some evidence, they want to see him. Oh believe me one day you will see him and realise how stupid you are. He is everywhere, noone can hide from him. No deeds go unnoticed and one day ppl will answer to him for their failiure to be humans and that they give in to Satan's temptations. I dont care what ppl say, but there's more than enough evidence that he exist, you just need to look for it and open your eyes when he is helping you or showing you that. Feel it and you will believe it! This is why music like this will never be forgotten, because its god's creation and he is eternal. Whoever lived in the 60's 70's and 80's were truly blessed with the golden era of humanity. I only wish that i was born during these times, to experience the magic of it. It saddens me that i was born later and im stuck with this toxic world of people who dont believe in god and dont realise, that one day every truth will come out and they will be really sorry, that they havent seen that earlier and helped change the world for the better. Because right now everyone is changing it for the worse. I hope to see you guys in a better place one day, just have some faith, dont have doubt about god and he will be always there for you.

The song "By the rivers of Babylon" keeps reminding us that life is unique in God's hands..As we reflect on our lives' downs, as what David did, we can hold unto God's promises that He is faithful, neither He will never leaves nor forsakes us (Heb.:13:5). King David nor the other Israelites are beside the river of Babylon after captivity, its hard being not in your own home, a refugee. But God is on our side, in fact, He is in us believers. He could uphold us more and more (and He is) to become victorious (Isa. 41:10) on different trials and difficulties...so that we're not always on the environmenment or situation of poverty, scarcity and trials. When triumphants and victories comes, God has lifted us from darkness into light...

Psalm 137 1 By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. 2 There on the poplars we hung our harps, 3 for there our captors asked us for songs, our tormentors demanded songs of joy; they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!” 4 How can we sing the songs of the Lord while in a foreign land? 5 If I forget you, Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill. 6 May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not consider Jerusalem my highest joy.
Amen. It's curious to think that such Godly sentiment would be "cancelled" immediately in todays culture. What a shame it is for art today to be deprived of such meaningfulness, and to find itself so debased as a result.
Hey, sounds like you forgot the rest of the psalm: 7 Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation. 8 O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us. 9 Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.

@Peter Evans in the 70's there's a standard level for digital recording in bits . The consumer standard choose is 16 bit, the recording studio at the time in the early of 80nuses 32 bit. Psalm 137:1 KING JAMES VERSION
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.

What about the last verse?
@@lefteriseleftheriades7381 The last verse was likely the Words of their Mouths and the Mediations of their Hearts while sitting by the Rivers in Babylon remembering what evil the Babylonians did to their children in Zion. Read the history. A few years later… the Handwriting was on the Wall…and the prayers of the Israelites were answered.
Moral of the story: Don’t f with the Jews. It won’t go well with you.
@@willmad3121 it's clear as day that that last verse mentality was carried out through the years into today
@@lefteriseleftheriades7381 Perfectly clear from the beginning (and until TheEnd)…those that come against Israel face the Promise of The God of Abraham Issac and Jacob in Genesis 12:1-3. If lesson isn’t learned; Ezekiel 38-39 coming up. And when that isn’t enough…their Messiah returns to meet ALL the Armies of the World coming against Israel. Isaiah 12-14.
Best time get along with ..than to go against them. Arabs started 1/2 dozen wars in past 75 years…and lost every one of them. The Jews are know to cheat: they have the God of Abraham Issac and Jacob on their team. Archangel Michael as well.

For some TOTALLY random reason it just popped in my head just now, after all this time?! Weird.
It's so odd hearing it now when I'm 46, and actually hearing the words and understanding them. Esp now I've just become a Christian 3yrs ago almost (baptised last year.) So I'm like, "Oh, that's what it's (the song,) all about."

It comes from the Bible - Psalms, I think!
THATS WHY it’s timeless because this song is an Almighty YAHUAH song.
@@luanazoli1954: Yes, I doubt many people realize that the words come from the Bible. I'm sure once they find out about it, they'll silence these videos! .
Psalm 137 to be exact

4050s Time traveler here, its still a banger. Btw do you guys say banger in this gen im not sure?
When triumphants and victories comes, God has lifted us from darkness into light...
when they talk about timeless music this is it..
I just went to Boney M live concert here in Toronto Canada, it was beautiful and Rivers of babylon is one of my favorite.Liz Mitchel was the only original singer left in this group. She is kind with a gold heart❤
I am jealous
Where are the rest of the band members
Boney M and their songs will always be played for years and years to come. Just timeless classics. The pacific island where I’m from consider this their party music so you’ll always hear Boney M play at all parties lol. Great music!
I've NEVER heard of them or this song... interesting band though
@@joberry877 i think they were massive in Europe only. You'd be lucky to hear em on radio elsewhere. Party music no doubt!!
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down
Yeah, we wept, when we remembered Zion
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down
Yeah, we wept when we remembered Zion
When the wicked
Carried us away in captivity
Required from us a song
Now how shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land?

BIBLE based music
i am a muslim and used to dance when hear this music... i never know before that the music lyric actually from bible... hahahaa.. btw this song about jewish lamentation after their kingdom was wracked down by babylonian kingdom.
I remember listening to Boney M albums in my childhood. My dad would turn up the volume to max in the huge speakers we had. The whole block would hear this gem. Miss those good old times.
We gotta pass these kinds of things on. Kids nowadays have completely watered down, sheltered childhoods.
In Sri Lanka my father used to play this and other great hits and I used to enjoy listening to them and will never forget them ever. Brings back childhood memories.
I can truly relate this
My brother who is no longer with us would blast this number and folks down the street would come complain to my parents🤪

Once this song gets in your head it stays--love it!
That’s the power of the Bible. Love it or hate it, there’s no denying it’s unforgettable prose.
Also helps that Boney M set it to music and perform it so well

Psalm 137
1 By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept
when we remembered Zion.
2 There on the poplars
we hung our harps,
3 for there our captors asked us for songs,
our tormentors demanded songs of joy;
they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”
4 How can we sing the songs of the Lord
while in a foreign land?
5 If I forget you, Jerusalem,
may my right hand forget its skill.
6 May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth
if I do not remember you,
if I do not consider Jerusalem
my highest joy.
Ok
I like this song im singing on my karaoke☺☺
Amen. It's curious to think that such Godly sentiment would be "cancelled" immediately in todays culture. What a shame it is for art today to be deprived of such meaningfulness, and to find itself so debased as a result.
Hey, sounds like you forgot the rest of the psalm:
7 Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation.
8 O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us.
9 Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.
I came to see if anyone else had noticed this. So many layers to this song that the whole world has missed. They were singing deliverance over Black America, maybe they knew, maybe they didn't May God open our eyes. 🙏🏾
I first heard this great song when I was 12 years old. I'm 55 and I still love her and the whole Boney "M" band. Legend!

@@shiranuic9547 the lyrics of the song are from the old testament. The Jewish people supposedly sang it after the Assyrians conquered their city and forced them to relocate outside of Israel around 800BC

Old is gold
A song written three thousand years ago during the reign of the house of David!
More precisely ~587 B.C. See Book of Jeremiah. Composition of the Psalms of course began with King David 1000 B.C. but Psalm 137 was rightly added to the liturgical hymnody.
@@stmartin17773 the Jamaican beat and musical style are not that old and that's what makes this song come alive.
