A true gentleman, I was honoured to have met Gordon in 1980 when he visited our barracks in Berlin.
Gordon was unquestionably the greatest goalkeeper I have ever seen in 60 years of following football. That save of his in the 1970 World Cup Finals in Mexico will be talked about a hundred years from now, it was simply phenomenal.
My generation has enormous respect for Banks. ( From Brazil)
i love the part in Gordon's book " Banks of England " when he tell us what Bobby Moore said to him after "that save " . Bobby said " you must be getting old Gordon you used to catch them at one time ".

I love listening to him describe this goal. I love his obvious respect for the Brazilian players as well. Tostao, Rivelino, Pele- Banks knew exactly who he was playing against and speaking kindly about his adversaries is a true testament to this man's character. He seems like such a decent fellow.

Paul Nesbitt We only lost to Germany in 1970 because Banksy wasn't fit to play. He probably would've saved one of the goals that Bonetti conceded. Banks was probably the best goalkeeper in the world at that time., even though he played for Stoke City.

I was born in 1996, but when I begin too watch football. I have never heard about this big Legend, but that was until I started to study a lot of the history of this sport.
I think too be able too watch a keeper like Gordon Banks, for these people which watched him a lot, was a unforgettable and a fantastic experience for them ❤ And that save against Pele, just woooow, incredible 👏👏👏👏 Banks have brought a lot of memories in his football-career. He will never be forgotten for his amazing for the England national team, and for all the clubs he played for ❤ 😊 (I'm really sorry for my bad english)

What a fantastic save!. If you noticed also Carlos Alberto bent his pass on the outside of his boot which bent round Terry Cooper perfectly onto the run of Jairzihno. Still cannot believe Banksy saved it.
Yes, in fact, the whole move is wonderful to watch, from the precision and check of C. Alberto's through-ball to Jair's pinpoint cross on the run, to Pelé's powerful and textbook header, to Banks's miraculous save. What a joy!
Actually, I thought Jair got a bit lucky because he almost misread/underestimated the check and brilliance of the pass, but he made up for it with the sublime cross

When watching the footage of that save, take note of where Banks is positioned when Jairzinho makes the cross to Pele, and compare it with his position when he makes the save.

r.i.p. gordon,I played in the same side with him for North Liverpool on a tour of Malta in 78/79,Gordon west shared the goalie duties on that tour,we won the tournament and were presented with the trophy by Stanley Mathews not bad eh,I was very happy that west was our goalie as I am a big evertonian,the two Gordons were great guys west loved a drink banks not so much he was a lovely guy an absolute gentle man and a pleasure to have played/met with him,goodnight and God bless both the gordan.
Straight after the save Alan Mullery went to Gordon Banks and said "Why didn't you catch it"? Banksy refused to give his response out loud haha
An impressive 73 caps for England. Goodness know how many more he'd have had if not for that car crash in 1972.
