I use an iron . Use parchment paper , cut the zip loc bag to the desired size , put the zip loc bag between the parchment paper , iron the edge and done.
i use my vacuum sealer to make custom bags, just make sure to experiment a bit first because the ziploc and other brands are much thinner than proper vacuum seal bags, go a few seconds at a time and open it up early, (don’t let it go full seal cycle) wait a few seconds to let it cool before removing or you will tear your seal.
Thank you as I was just going to mention my vacuum sealer I’ve had for more than 30 years! I wonder if the zip bags will work for just the fusing! Great idea but #1 I don’t have a gas stove!!!!
Over the past few years I have enjoyed your videos very much, and I learn so much! I think you should compile categorized videos (kitchen, bathroom, mud room, garage, closets, etc.) and create a DVD series. Would make for an excellent gift set. Specially for brides, graduates, housewarming and single-again men.
This is great information. As a crafter, I will be using this method to cut ziplocs down to the exact size I need for selling my pieces. It's so tiresome finding just the right size bags that will fit all the different size jewelry cards I have. Thank you so much!❤
I also use aluminum foil and I put stainless steel cleaner and it works. But thanks so much for this tip on the bags. I use to put food in one bag but I always had to defrost all my food. Now I put them in sandwich bags what ever size portion I want the put in a larger freezer bag and it works out great. No more waste.
I've used the curling iron to do the same thing to seal one side of the bag. But this is really a good hack! I wonder if I could use a Pizza roller and heat that up?
I’ve done something similar as the video to return opened products to stores that say, “No returns if product is opened. “ You must be careful how you open the bag the first time. I usually cut the bottom.
My dad taught me this trick about the bag over 25 years ago, I've been doing it since then, and for the knife, you can use very fine sand paper to avoid cleaners... just a thought. TFS

Cool Tip- After the cut, the plastic has to HARDEN, not DRY. I love ziplock bags. I prefer the FREEZER bags as they are thicker & more robust. Quarts & 1 gallon are my go to. They do make a 2 gallon but I have not found a need for those. !

I like this idea using a gallon size zip lock bag to customize it for a tablet or small laptop to keep away scratches or water resistant if I’m going to be in a wet environment. Or anywhere that spills might occur. I also really like the idea of using the parchment paper and the iron someone mentioned in another comment. Thanks for this video. Cheers.!
Often need different sized zip lock bags, ima card maker, lots of paper in all shapes and sizes, as well as completed cards, I like to put them in a bag, buying a bunch of a certain size is not heap so tyvm
Be aware that heating a knife or screwdriver, as I did can undo the hardening of the metal. My screwdriver wasn't hard anymore and it bent at the tip when I tried to use it on a screw! I was heating it to help melt ice in a non-frost free freezer 🤪
I love this trick! Question, I have an electric stove top that has the circle heat plate things on top, how would I heat up the knife? Is there an alternative way? Thanks! Love your videos!!! ❤❤❤
I’ll take a stab at this question since it’s not too old and no one else has. I would think that if you lay a dull table knife on the heat circle in a way that heats the tip for about an inch back you would have it plenty hot enough to melt bags. You may need to press the tip to the surface with a something heavy like a small cast iron pan . I would experiment with heat settings and use the same knife in the future. Beware of the handle getting hot and do a practice run to determine what speed works best across the bag to result in a good seal for a given tip temperature. Parchment paper over and under the bag prevents melted plastic where not wanted. Best to you.
@ReadyUpGo Thanks, I'll give that a try, though I don't have a cast iron pan, too heavy to lift. I tried a candle lighter as well, didn't work out so well.
Won't hold water as compared to factory edge. Tried it with sandwich and freezer bags. Freezer bag was better, but also didn't hold water. Still a great idea for very short term and maybe non-perishable dry goods.
I have a wood burning tool, and a We R Makers Fuse tool. Fuse is marketed for fusing plastic, and I use it for making shaker cards. It would work great for this application, too.
Tip from a blacksmith. Another good reason to use an old knife...heating the steel up to the temperature indicated by the color softens (anneals) the steel. Dont expect this portion of the to hold an edge. The blade can be re-hardened but it is a procedure not recommended for the average homemaker. Nice idea for making your own bags.
Soldering irons are made to take the heat. No need to potentially ruin a good kitchen knife and many soldering irons have exacto style knife tips you can add onto them.
Thanks for making me aware of Pink Stuff! Not sure how I missed it (I'm 74, and I thought I had used most cleaners, polishes, waxes, etc.). It's a perfect gift for my daughter-in-law. We have a running joke that I get her pink gifts for birthday, Christmas, etc. So far, pink drill, jigsaw puzzle, Swiss army knife, and now, Stuff! Very cool technique on the baggies, but doesn't it destroy the hardening of the knife blade? Not that it's a big deal, a $1 kitchen knife is fairly expendable. Nice narration on the video, good job all around!
Try Scrub Daddy brand’s product called Power Paste. It is more natural & I have both products & prefer it over the Pink Stuff. The Pink leaves more of a waxed finish on my metal kitchen sink than Power Paste does, but I think Power Paste cleans better. Barkeeper’s Friend powder is the cheapest but it is rough on hands.
YOU MADAM ARE A FREAKING GENIUS! not only does it cut but seals...AWESOME! I was wondering how I could get bags that are the right size to ship out my seedlings, plants, seeds!!!! without having to buy thousands or break the bank. The bags are not that expensive but sometimes cant find the right size or the shipping is more expensive than the bagssss! thank youuuuuuu so much!
You can also use scissors to cut your bag and use an old put the CD or cassette case ( if anyone still has those around - llol) close the baggie cut edge out in the case and use a lighter to seal the edges.
I cut the bag and place it inside book like a phone book where the open edge just sticks out from the book. I then use a lighter to melt the edge. Then I roll a plastic bottle top with a "serrated" surface over the melted edge to make it secure.
Three questions, please: 1. Can you use a serrated knife? 2) How do you fix a small portion accidentally left open? 3) Can you use an electric stove? Thank you!
I think the straight edge would be easier to do it with. I don’t see why you couldn’t do it with electric you would just lay the blade on burner. Small hole use a lighter. You have to put the part to be sealed between something to keep melting whole thing. You then take the lighter and quickly and lightly put the flame to it. Sealed won’t be as perfect or pretty but won’t be wasted either.
Right? I just use whatever bag I have. Not about to heat up a knife and cut a bag and then it still has a hole in it like hers did. Lol. Then u waste time trying to fix it.
