  • Hello friends!
I’m Elisabetta, an Italian watercolor artist with a passion and a curiosity for art supplies and pigments.
Today I'm swatching and and comparing 2 colors by W&N professional range: Yellow Ochre vs Yellow Ochre Light. They use the same pigment PY43, are very similar, but there are subtle differences. Let's find out together!
I will also try some mixes, just to see if there are differences when in combination with other colors.

You’ve basically recreated DaVinci paints formulation of Sap Green, PG7 + PY42.

Actually, it's a very lovely Sap Green this combination! Thanks for your comment.

Hi, Elisabetta. I don't know if you've tried the Gold Ochre from Winsor&Newton. It's truly gorgeous too. Probably my favourite of them all. And the mixes it creates with Venetian Red are also beautiful too.

I haven‘t tried either, but the Yellow Ochre Light looks very yellow and could act as a primary yellow, I think?

If you’re painting landscape depicting sunset/ twilight time of day, paint a wash of YO up from the horizon and then bring a blue gradated wash down from the top of the page to merge into it…the yo (usually! 😅) resists turning green , remaining yellow!

I do the same! I also like to use Raw Sienna for this. It makes lovely skies. I LOVE yellow skies as I’m a huge fan of Turner. Thank you for your message Jenneke. ❤️

Seems like yellow ochre light is a good alternative to those non-transparent Naples Yellow mixes many brands offer.

Hi Sergio! To be honest, I quite like Naples Yellow….it’s lovely as an underpainting and as a pale yellow for winter skies…but yes you are right! I must try to replace it with my new YO light! Good idea 🤩

I LIKE the light one!! I have 4-5 PY43’s, all are on the dark side..I just checked my swatches…even monte amiata PY43 is darker..🤷🏼‍♀️. Darn it…!! Just added to list for Sept..LOVE that glow!
I HAD been thinking next month I’d put $ towards clothes instead of paint…HOWEVER, after talking to a friend yesterday who got some stunning handmade paints..my cart is already filling up.
    Thing is..this reminds me of a PBr24 I have..even a light PBr7..or either of those with a touch of PY151….
I’ve gotten away from the heavily granulating/separating..transparent colors just seem to suit my style more..which is one reason I like this one. My PY43’s all seem more opaque than this

Hi Elaine!! I’m also a little tired of super granulating colors….good old classics suit my style better!! This PY43 seem to me to be less opaque than usual as well!!

Hi Elisabetta! I like how you did this swatching chart. When you started mixing the Yellow Ochre with Scarlet I was thinking that it would be nice to see the pure color of Scarlet in the first column by its name and then BOOM!, you swatched out the pure color almost right on cue. Yellow Ochre is a very important color, I have been using it more and more lately, especially in my portraits. As always, great video and keep up the good work!

Me too! I always use yellow ochre as primary yellow in my portraits! And it’s such a versatile color…it’s a color that I keep buying and it’s always the first to finish (with UM blue) in my palettes..thank you as usual for your kind comment. 😃

Thank you Elisabetta! I always enjoy your videos and learn something new and/or useful. I have really grown to appreciate yellow ochre, but I think gold ochre is my choice. It is more yellow and a bit brighter. This might be better for landscapes than portraits though.🤔
