    Transparent Orange is simply *chef's kiss*. Certainly one of my favourite orange pigments available!
    Thank you for swatching entire watercolour ranges AND doing it in proper light conditions :) I like your swatches for every possible reason, I'm glad I can refer to your videos when I want to see a particular colour. I was on the verge of buying W&N's dot card several times, so I'm going to pay a lot of attention to this series!

    New Gamboge is a wonderful colour when you want to use something intense and opaque. It also mixes well with various blues to create amazing greens. I have this colour in three brands: Van Gogh, Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton

    Winsor & Newton watercolors are my favorites, so I am going to enjoy this series of paint swatches even more than usual! New Gamboge is my favorite yellow because its a good balance between the base PY150 and a Quinacridone Gold; more character than the former but not as deep and overpowering as the latter. It mixes the most gorgeous greens and it is a joy to use in either the Professional or Cotman range. I honestly can’t tell the difference between the two.

      Interesting to hear that the Cotman one is so similar. Lots of money to be saved there. 😊

    I have used New Gamboge. Purchased the Daniel Smith mixing set and it has New Gamboge as the warm yellow. Swatched out a color chart, swatches, color wheels and playful mixes with that set. The New Gamboge made beautiful vibrant oranges, lovely muted greens, olive greens and a yummy triad warm chocolate brown. IMO, it's a choice for a warm yellow in a split primary.

    I'm one of those people that's not a fan of cadmiums. I prefer yellows that are clear and vibrant. However, I love the Cotman version of Gamboge Hue. The yellow undertone against the darker tone is just gorgeous in my opinion. 😊

      I can understand that. For some reason I've just developed a love for the cadmiums and always miss them when they're not in my palette.

    DPP is diketo pyrrolo pyrrole. It was given CI PO107 but, from what I’ve read, something went wrong and the registration did not continue. Roman Szmal said that their Aquarius Orange is made using the same pigment.

    Transparent Orange has the pigment PO107 in it according to my 5ml tube.
    Transparent orange is one of my favourite shades of orange, along with Permanent Orange PO62,
    Hokkaido Orange PY216, e.g. as Naples Orange from White Nights and Quinacridone Orange PO48.
    I also like to use Yellow deep PY65 and Naples Yellow dark PBr 24 as the orange.

    I have a tube of W&N original New Gamboge, and it is one of my favorite all-time yellows. Over time I have realized that I am more loyal to a really good colour over any particular brand. Though oddly I am not a fan of Daniel Smith. There is no question of their quality. I think I was just first introduced to honey based paints, and that became the standard by which I compare all watercolour paints.

    Yay for W&N. Last week I was struggling with painting on some new to me paper and was getting irked. Then I pulled out my WN palette and realized they have a reputation for being well behaved because they are! They worked absolutely beautifully on the paper. Sadly WN don’t do themselves any favors with their stingy dots on the dot card. I think they really expect you to only smear it on the card, I had the same problem getting decent swatches. It looks machine made rather than hand made like Daniel Smith. Fortunately their paints dont behave that way. I have a couple of their cadmiums, very pretty. Winsor Lemon - my preferred lemon pigment. It makes super soft ranges of greens. Their New Gamboge is much better than the DS one I think, which is way orange. It makes a great range of greens. The Indian Yellow is nice, but not necessary. Transparent yellow is really nice, doesn’t go too brown in masstone. I also have the Winsor Lemon Deep, which is the same pigment as Schmincke Volcano yellow, maybe not as granulating. It’s very weak, but works just as well for those pretty mixes. Transparent Orange is gorgeous, and I like Winsor orange too. But I love their Turner’s yellow- it made a great gold for jewelry- Lifted well for highlights. It made an absolutely glowing background for an object I painted, and I made the loveliest soft dove grey with it and PR122 and PB15:3. It is pretty opaque.

    I don't use much WN, but I do have Winsor Lemon and Winsor Orange. I also have Aureolin from before I knew what I was doing when buying paint. lol I really like the color of the Winsor Orange RS. Turner's Yellow is a new one to me. Kim's site says it's a rare pigment so it sounds expensive. I haven't looked at prices yet. lol I mostly use yellows and oranges from either DV or DS. Yay for new series.

    I use PY150 nickel azo yellow, PY110 indian yellow hue from M.Graham and PO71 trans. pyrrol orage because they are transparent. I'm tempted to try Turner Yellow; it seems soft and buttery. Also transparent orange; brighter than PO71.

    I don't have many W&N and don't even have a dotcard, so this is welcome! I do have the Transparent Yellow PY150 and I find it slightly "cleaner" than some other brands, and less earthy (Schmincke too). I've had my eye on several of these -- Lemon Yellow Deep PY159 is said to be the pigment used in Schmincke's Volcano Yellow (I can't see if there's granulation here) and I do know the pigment is very low tinting! Besides, who's to say Schmincke doesn't just add some granulation medium 🤣. I'm also interested in Turner's Yellow just for pigment nerd purposes. Also Aureolin for sketchbook use - I'm curious to see why it continues to be popular. I guess it's a type of cobalt yellow. The other one I'm curious about is the Transparent Orange, but honestly it's probably just PO 71 or some variant of it!

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I want to experiment with PY40 in sketchbooks too but it always seems to be expensive.

    • @hannahthufvesson
      @hannahthufvesson ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The W&N PY159 does granulate, though with smaller particles than the Schminke one. The one from Schminke has noticeably larger granules and almost no base tone, which the W&N has, meaning you will tint the entire mix more with the W&N version. The Schminke one is also a bit warmer (and should just be used straight from the tube as it's a nightmare to rewet 😬). It's certainly a fairly low tinting pigment, but I find it stronger than a PY53 for example.
      I really like Turner's Yellow, it had a dreamy quality to it ☺️
      And I believe some other folks were writing comments about the orange pigment in Transparent Orange being DPP. ☺️
