U.S. Air Force: Portraits in Courage - William Pitsenbarger

  • William Pitsenbarger was a pararescueman who went behind enemy lines on numerous occasions to save lives. He was fearless and risked his life on many occasions so others may live. The Medal of Honor recipient should be remembered for how he lived, for how he embodied the Core Value of "Service Before Self," and for how his story continues to inspire others.

Respect, Pits. Respect and a standing salute from a former Swedish army medic.

Just because we're air force doesn't mean we're scared or can't fight. This is proof.

I wish I would have known him. He died before I was born. My maternal great-grandmother, was his great-aunt. I'm so proud to call him family. I cannot wait for the movie, "The Last Full Measure", about him to come out. It should come out next year.

It is so nice to see your comment and to know you are related to him.
I just watched the movie The Last Full Measure and couldn't stop crying. I won't ever forget William Pitzenbarger and his self-sacrificing spirit dying in behalf of these soldiers and being there to save the wounded and comfort the dying as well as fight when others couldnt. What a brave, courageous and loving human being who didn't think twice about going into dangerous territory to save lives at the possible cost of his own. I wonder how many of us would do the same.

I volunteered for the movie about Pitsenbarger because my Dad was career Navy. My uncle was a medic in WWII. Both grandfathers survived WWI and one died 11 years before I was born, the other one died when I was 6. Chemical warfare is not healthy. I care because my mentor in chaplaincy was Cecil Threadgill, the chaplain for Apollo 14 landing. Threadgill was a private on Iwo Jima during WWII before he became a chaplain later. I would not be here if men had not protected and given their lives for people I am related to and knew. Pitsenbarger the protector. A knight.

I don't think that there is anyplace to HOT for the ARMY pilots, the HH-43's had HOISTS.
(Braided steel cables that can be lowered.)
    Ever hear of them?
Every one of those guys on the ground and in the Air deserve a Medal, just for being there.
    Oh... Pedro not Husky.
