They forgot to mention the 12’s, chronic alcoholism, losing your weekends, constant muscle pain, inability to retrain, little to no exportable skills in the civilian sector, and the mission always coming before your self care even though upper leadership always tell you it doesn’t . God Bless the USAF and all the maintainers that keep it running.

If maintenance was all we did then this would be fine and accurate. Additional duties, pme, getting tasked with extracurriculars to aesthetically please, remedial and redundant training, mandatory fun, being voluntold for functions that hardly anyone wants to go to, and shitty supervision with a severe lack of manning kills the job. Otherwise, I fucking love fixing planes.

I was at dover 436amxs and at 1 point I was the only jet engine tech for a 6 month period on graveyard shift 6pm-6am. First day I turned out 7 jets in 1 night. When I came in for turn over dayshift made it out like I was some hero or something. One of the Ssgt's walked up shook my hand and goes. "ive got a new found respect for you. In 1 night alone you managed to turn out more work than the entire day shift crew did with 6 people". That was a hell of a moment. By the end of it I got 4 promotion recommendation letters and was the only SRA that was lead teach. Best job I ever had..Still have that uniform with the SRA stripe on it. Yea its only an e-4 but damned it felt earned.

Dad proudly served on the fight from '53-'63 in SAC and 63-89 as a Crew Chief in the 162nd in the AZ / Air National Guard !! Loved what he did so much that as a part time recruiter in the 60's, his F-102, $60981 was flown to Davis Monthan and towed by tug to El Con Shopping center in the early hours to display it all weekend and it was very successful !!
When he retired he formed the 162nd Memorial Committee and in 89 the first of now 3 large black granite stones with the names of retired and members passing while in the unit. Dads name appears next column over to Gen. Morris and they were great friends like everyone else on base. I'm very proud of what we learned about everyone in every field on base and we're very greatful that you're all the best !!

Pay attention and do well in tech school, finish your CDCs as soon as possible, then get your CCAF degree. You'll make rank faster and have more options open to you. Also, get your A&P while you're active duty if you can. It opens up a lot of doors in the civilian world once you get out. Oh, and don't fall for the head games in Basic. That's not how the real Air Force is. They're just trying to teach you how to follow simple instructions, and deal with being in trouble gracefully. Good luck Airman.

I wore a flight suit for the last 13 years before retiring as an MC-130P Instructor Flight Engineer, flying Combat Rescue.
I took my badass Mx bubbas with us on MANY, MANY a hairy, long rnage overwater or over-snowy mountain or over desert or over African Savannah mission.
I don't know too many of my Zipper Suited Su God Brethren that will agree with yuor statement.
I take great pride in my Flightline and Flight Test Mx background (Army Helos) and Infantry 1st hitch (Mechanized...Mortars). Equal pride to my time as Combat Aircrew, without a doubt.
Proud as Hell of my GreaseMonkey wrench brothers and sisters. Especially in Rescue. The maximum range of an excuse is zero meters...they just get it DONE, and get the sortie in the air. Every damned time poor "Jack" was floating alone in the water having hsi worst day ever, NO shortage of Mx bubbas were preflighting a spare while I was kicking tires and lighting 4 fires.
      Mad respect given.
