  • Airman First Class Pitsenbarger distinguished himself by extreme valor on 11 April 1966 near Cam My, Republic of Vietnam, while assigned as a Pararescue Crew Member, Detachment 6, 38th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron. On that date, Airman Pitsenbarger was aboard a rescue helicopter responding to a call for evacuation of casualties incurred in an ongoing firefight between elements of the United States Army's 1st Infantry Division and a sizeable enemy force approximately 35 miles east of Saigon.
Medal of Honor Recipient William Pitsenbarger gave his last full measure ... the ultimate sacrifice ... for his fellow troops and country.
U.S. Air Force video by Kevin Denter with narration by Master Sergeant Rusty Sawyer - November 2016

Watch his movie, “The Last Full Measure” so you can understand the BS politics that were at play to keep his story from being known. He was a hero and was finally given the proper recognition.

It was 55 years ago today that this young man died at the age of 21 saving other lives. I am sorry to say that I never knew of him until I saw the film The Last Full Measure, which also was not widely shown. Sad because it was a very good film. The Vietnam War is still a touchy subject for filmmakers, expecially today's film makers with their correctness on everything, We should never be ashamed of that War nor of American Soldiers who fought there. They did not ask to go. They went where their country sent them. They took lives and saved a lot of lives too. Thank you William Pitsenbarger and all soldiers of the Vietnam War for your service to this Country. William Pitsenbarger you will never be forgotten. God Bless You!!!

25 years in USAF retiring just recently, I never knew how he died. They never taught us that; only he died saving lives.

Thank you A1C Pitsenbarger your sacrifice saved many lives and changed many more lives for the good. I wore the same uniform you did from 1970 to 1974 I was proud to serve because of men like you and your outstanding love of humanity and country. Again thank you sir.

Every man dies, not all men live. Rare cloth, indeed.

This person's story deserves more likes...
I don't belong to the country which he belongs to but I am overwhelmed by the kind of effort this individual put in...and it takes guts to choose to stay at a place where you know you gonna die

What a fucking amazing American hero, someone who did not have to do what he did but gave his life instead so others could live

The movie is alright, but doesn’t cover the story fully because Hollywood messes with it a bit. Best I can offer is look him up in Wikipedia.

And college kids need trauma counselors when someone expresses an opinion they don’t like.

He was 21 years old. And he did something that he basically knew would result in his death for the chance to potentially save more fellow Americans and allies
