- On April 11, 1966, Airman 1st Class William Pitsenbarger personally saved more than 60 service members who had been ambushed by the Viet Cong. He was killed in action while trying to help the injured. The survivors of that battle recommended him for the Medal of Honor, a tribute that would not be fulfilled for nearly 35 years. Pitsenbarger's story is now told in a new film, "The Last Full Measure." CBS News national security correspondent David Martin talks with director Todd Robinson about his promise to Vietnam War veterans that their story, and Pitsenbarger's sacrifice, would not be forgotten.

My husband served in Pararescue in Vietnam the year after Pitz did. His name was legendary. We saw the movie the day it came out. And wish everyone could see it.
As an Air Force veteran, we all know about him and the story...

This is why CBS Sunday Morning is THE BEST program on television. So emotional now.
My husband was a pararescueman from 1970-1998. Lost 27 fellow PJ’s during his career. Pits represents all those who died “That Others May Live”.

How many more unsung heroes we must have missed. Thank God at least one of them was finally recognized.
Far, far too many. Americans seem to be ignorant of the fact that in peacetime, more than 5 million men AND women go to work everyday protecting all of us from whatever may befall the country. These types of stories are all too common, with 99% never being heard.

yeah thats pretty intense, you probably remember the scene in Saving Pvt Ryan where the soldier is calling for his mama as he was dying. Gets me every time.
(SGT Steven Bishop) As a fellow Air Force Vet, I SALUTE YOU A1C PITS. ....... We got razzed by other branches of the military (just as we razed them) but when it got real we all were "Brothers in Arms". I was a Security Police Specialist/Emergency Services Team/Search&Rescue and injured in the line of duty responding to a distress call. But I got to return home. ( I just walk a bit funny.:)) I thank not only our Vets but their family and loved ones that "served" right along with them. I know I gave my Mom plenty of gray hair and wrinkles.

Just saw the movie and I loved it. I never served in the military but can't imagine how it was but glad how it turned out. A real hero!!!
As an Air Force retiree with almost 23 years of service it gave me goosebumps to send this video to my girlfriends son. Caden is beginning his journey into the becoming a Pararescue trainee. It is essential for him to learn of the incredible sacrifices made by those who came before him came never be forgotten. I am forever humbled by the heroic action of the men and women who served is harms way and gave the ultimate sacrifice for their brothers and sisters in arms. God bless each of them along with the families they left behind. Salute.
If you don't cry either watching this or the movie you have no soul
What's even no soul is that this movie is a financial failure, its box office is lower than the budget. This means not many Americans honor him enough to watch this movie.

I was born and raised in Piqua Ohio. The hometown of William Pittsenbarger. I was in little league when the Pittsenbarger Sports Complex was dedicated in 1989.
In 2014 I was at the Air Force Museum when I met a man that was saved by Pittsenbarger. We got to talking, when the gentleman asked if I knew where he was laid to rest. I escorted him and his family to Covington Ohio so he could say thank you. For me it was an honor but also heartbreaking
This is crazy.. My close friends grandson is left for Fort Benning GA this afternoon.. I don't know why it has taken so long for our Veterans from Vietnam to be recognized.. So sad..
Many of the operations are still classified ma'am. Some will never be disclosed due to the fact it will be an embarrassment for the U.S. I'm speaking as a vet from '97-'17

I watch the movie and was really teary eyed. At least it was still won by the people who fights for it. Please watch it.
I was born in 1963...by the time 1980/1981 there was no draft...just had to register for a possible draft. I remember the names of some of my classmates older brothers (no sisters, as I recall)...who got injured, a few who died, but I just didn't know them personally. It's good to know that a movie today can be made that's just about the soldiers, and not about the "sturm and drang" back home.
...transparency is the best way a democracy can function...and towards the effort of our families knowing all that there is to know aout their loved one's service to our country.

Sadly, he isn't honored nor acknowledge enough by the American people even with this movie. Why? Bcoz the movie's box office is way lower than the budget, meaning not enough people watch it to make it a successful film. But to me, he's definitely a hero, and gave me an inspiration. Thank you Pits!

Respectfully, our military members' service and sacrifices have always made possible for the rest of us the luxury of engaging in arguments over culture and morality. It takes nerve to take a knee in support of a cause and to display a Trump or Biden sign or banner, and for any of us to stand in public and exercise our sacred freedom of speech. I have seven veterans in my family lines who served during the Second World War: an uncle and aunt who were stateside in the US Army Air Forces as a dental surgeon and nurse, respectively; my father, a stateside US Army staff sergeant at Fort Bragg, NC, training men on the giant 155 mm howitzer; an uncle who was a US Army cook feeding thousands of soldiers building the Alaska Highway; another uncle who served in combat as a US Navy frogman, and whose wartime experiences left him so traumatized that when he talked about his experiences, he would sweat heavily from his shirt collar down to his socks; my father-in-law, in the 81st Engineer Combat Battalion of the US Army's 106th Infantry Division, which fought alongside the 168th Engineers in the Battle of St. Vith, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge, earning both units of engineers the Distinguished Unit Citation for gallantry in stopping the Fifth Panzer Army for a critical five days and ruining Hitler's timetable for a rapid breakthrough; and my father-in-law's cousin, an air gunner in the South Pacific who was shot down and whose remains were never recovered.
These relatives were a mixture of Republicans and Democrats. My father and Army cook uncle were, respectively, a GOPer and a working-class liberal, and they were close friends whose political differences didn't affect their friendship. Whether you stand, sit, or kneel when the national anthem is played, your choice was made possible by ordinary people who served and protected all of us. Let's honor them by all of us voting for whomever we choose. It's the best way to honor national heroes like Airman 1st Class William Pitsenbarger; my father-in-law PFC John H. Atsatt, Bronze Star, WWII; and my late neighbor Rich Joyce, Bronze Star, Vietnam.
I am a veteran. And, I see no problem with people taking a knee while our national anthem is playing. I am no one to tell another American how to express their feelings about our country.

It looks like its gone from local theaters before I even knew about it. I'll have to travel an hour to a small theater off the beaten path to see it, where its playing 1 week only.
considering the story and how much was Hollywood embellishment, I would have much preferred to see the story of his heroism unfold during the battle

William " Pits" was the ONLY child.......think about that. They lost their only child at the age of 21.
Maybe your government should stop waging war in other people’s countries and then soldiers won’t die crying out for their mothers.
