    Welcome back to Xross Platform, a companion series to Remake or Rebreak where we look at different games of the same name released in the same generation! This time we're looking at three cross-console ports of a game I talk about all the time but haven't yet reviewed: Glover for the Nintendo 64, Microsoft Windows 9x, and PlayStation.
    Remember that Xross Platform reviews don't use a ROR score. Instead, I will nominate the version I recommend the most for Xross Platform M.V.P.

      Honestly if he's going to do the same comparison for Rayman 2, I want to save him the time to run the original PC version.
      All I can suggest is use a digital copy for the PC, because the original release is unplayable post Windows XP. As in game breakingly.

    I absolutely cannot express how much I'm loving how in recent years the talk about Glover has just been increasing more, and more. I got the N64 version completely by happenstance since originally I wend to a used game store with a name that unfortunately completely escapes me. It was in a mall, and I know it wasn't a GameStop, but it had what you'd expect, shelves, and a glass counter full of games. I originally went to grab Donkey Kong 64, but they of course didn't have a copy, so I pretty much was told by my mother to look around and pick another cart I wanted, and out of all the ones on display, the one that caught my eye was that colorful sticker on Glover's, and I grabbed it while my sister got Pokemon Snap.
    Ever since then I have loved this game without end, the only exception being I will not touch those bonus levels with a pole the size of the Eiffel Tower, 100% completion be damned. I'll never deny the game's flaws, it has many, but I feel like the game has always been underrated, and the likes of the Game Grumps trashing it finally gave it a spotlight, but an unreasonably negative one. I'm glad so many people are giving the game more credit now, even though it's by no means a masterpiece, I still feel it's a great game to have.
    It's awesome that Piko got the rights to Glover to fix up, and finish the sequel, even if I personally feel like it takes too much from Banjo Kazooie rather than doing more to differentiate itself from it like the first game. Regardless, if a cart is released of it, I'll gladly save up money to grab one to put beside my copy of the first game. It'd be interesting to see how it plays on the intended system, as well as with, hopefully, a full, new soundtrack if they can find enough people that had insight of the development, and composers from the first game's track.

  • @JezMM

    A small detail missed regarding the music is that the N64 tracks were actually way longer than the CD audio versions, usually containing a bunch of extra sequences and variations before they looped. Cool as it was for me to hear the music in CD quality when I got the PC version as a kid, it was definitely a bittersweet experience that most tracks were only about half as long.
    Cool to see the effort put in to get the PC version running properly here though. I actually mostly have memories of playing the low quality visuals you refused to settle for, since even at the time, my graphics card didn't seem to play nice with the game. Since I had the N64 version to play anyway, it was actually kind of novel for me to experience the game with super low quality graphics for some reason. My favourite touch was that on the absolute lowest settings, the ball was literally represented as a textureless, animationless sprite that was either red, black, grey or green depending on the ball's current form. I can also vouch from own personal memory - even on a CRT monitor from the time, that weird scanline issue on the pre-recorded video files in the game was still VERY apparent.
    Anyway, very decent video and a very fair judgement of the game overall!
    (P.S. That first puzzle on the final stage with the alien enemy that crystallises and launches your ball? You have to stun it with fist slams and push it away from the ball switch area so you can activate the switches uninterrupted... Or at least that's how I do it nowadays (as a kid I definitely used cheats on 50% of the puzzles, although low gravity was my personal go-to).

    • @OfficialBulldozerStudios
      @OfficialBulldozerStudios 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not just that. Listen to the track for the carnival world boss.
      They couldn't even loop the song properly. It still plays the jack-in-the-box theme for when Cross-Stitch pops out of the box at the start of the battle *EVERY. TIME. IT. LOOPS.*
      Are you telling me that these developers were so lazy, they couldn't get something right that Hasbro Interactive pulled off effortlessly on the Nintendo 64 A YEAR EARLIER!? I want this PS1 port of Glover to die from cancer!

    I grew up with Glover and always had a soft spot for it. I think it’s responsible for my interest in lofi hip hop and vaporwave today, as it employs many of the same aesthetics and music. I’d love a rerelease of it on a virtual console. Also, the fact that they changed Cross Stitches laugh is a real tragedy. I always loved it as a kid. I think the reason why I like your channel so much is because you go through all of that extra effort to play games in the most accurate intended way possible. You could have easily half assed your content by using subpar emulators and called it a day, but you always go that extra mile even if it means spending a lot of money. Just wanted to let you know your efforts are appreciated. Keep up the good work.

    Very interested to see what elements from these 3 versions are used for the new pc port, as each version has it's own aspects that are best, between the graphics, controls and gameplay differences. Really hope you make a video on the new pc port. Absolutely loved this video

    I remember getting frustrated with all the flaws you pointed out, but enjoyed it anyways once I got used to the controls (and because I didn't have anything else to play at the time).
    And didn't know the game gave you the cheats if you 100% completed it, I just discovered them by pressing B near the bird in the hub and it would make the sounds the C buttons make when you input them, if you catch the sequence, you can get the cheat codes that way.

    I have a few ideas: Alien 3, Aladdin, Batman Returns (the Genesis version has no contest), *maybe* Star Wars 4th and 5th gen (along with Indiana Jones if that counts), Animaniacs, and The Jungle Book
    For ROR, I'd love to see Mega Man Powered Up, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes (if that counts), Star Fox 64 3D, Majora's mask, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, and maybe even Link's Awakening (GameBoy VS Switch).

    Okay time to collect thoughts on a game with box art that left me wanting this game as a kid, even without a 64 (or knowing there was a PSone version).

    Even though Glover wasn't the best game on the N64 when it came out and with some of it's massive flaws that you pointed out, it was really enjoyable and offered a good challenge when compared with other platform games. And yeah, Atlantis Realm has the best soundtrack in the whole game.
    Also IIRC, if you play on Easy mode your movement isn't inverted when you try and balance on the ball, which doing the practice stage wasn't that big of an issue to begin with for me anyway - but is kinda my biggest gripe when people shame the controls and think they can just jump right into the game.

    Glover (N64) was a large part of my childhood. I like Glover for it's unique concept and gameplay. Oh, and you taught me that the Ps1 has different versions of the N64 music so I'll be checking that later. Also, someday I want to make a Glover (N64) level hack.

    I'm very glad you made the point that with proper framepacing even 20fps can look smooth. So many people chalk everything up to framerate, and yet so many people forget it's the framepacing and smoothing techniques that make it look proper and keep input consistent.

    Glover was my absolute favorite game as a kid and I personally had it on the Playstation 1. I honestly didn't know it was released for the N64 or PC until around 6 months ago. I think the thing that boggles my mind the most is that the hub doesn't change as the game progresses in the PS1 version. I could swear I remember the landscapes going from desolate to grasslands. I remember being fascinated and thinking that maybe the hub held secrets based on different points of the games progression. I'd say it's possible I imagined it but I have Aphantasia so it's a bit beyond my scope of ability... Either way, I greatly appreciated the review and as someone who only found your channel three days ago I'm genuinely enjoying the precision and detail of your content. It's not often my attention can be kept for an hour+ in multiple videos.

    When I first found out about the PC version of Glover, info on that version was hard to come buy, and after getting an iso of the game, it had the flickering issue, even on Windows XP. I don't blame you for buying a late 90s PC for Glover on PC.

    Amazing video. This is funny to see since I was recently thinking of this game, for whatever reason.
    Also glad that I'm not the only one who finds 'no X AND Y inverts options' obnoxious. I don't see why every modern game just doesn't have this option available. Most games have them now, but you'd be surprised how many modern games still do not.

    You know, what I use to play old Windows 3d games is either Nglide which is a 3dfx plugin, basically it 'catches' 3dfx instructions from older games and translates them to Glide instructions. The other one I use is DGVoodoo2, which I actually use the most as it can essentially 'forces' games to run in 4k resolutions and even has some in-game hacks to minimize graphical errors. You can even apply anti-aliasing and shader techniques that the original games weren't capable of... just saying you didn't have to waste hundreds of bucks on old computers/parts. ^^;
