'62 Volvo Amazon With a Corvette Heart

  • Ahh yes, the age-old classic tale of picking up a car to "restore", only to end up with a project that's slowly spiraled out of control. Shant Yazijian from Bells and Vaughn picked up this forgotten Volvo Amazon 122s with the best intentions of keeping and rebuilding the motor that was in it... but you know damn well how that goes.

I have always loved Volvos. My favorite car I have ever owned was a deep blue Volvo 240 wagon with a standard 4 cylinder and 4 speed. When I got it in had 160,000 miles on it and I drove it till it hit 310,000. At that point it was finally was leaking oil and tired. I got a motor from a 740 turbo that I modified and put in. I stiffened up the suspension, dropped it and added some 17 inch wheels from a modern Volvo. I let a friend borrow it and it met a tree doing more damage than what could be safely fixed.

Old Volvo guy here. IPD still lists parts for this car. In particular they have urethane bushings and upgraded sway bars. Back in the day, 1970, I had a PV 544 with parts from 1960 through 1964. Later on we had a new purchased 1982 240 GT Turbo wagon in black with tan leather seats and four speed with overdrive. Wish I still had it.
Typed this before he mentioned IPD.

People used to swap those small buick v8s into these in sweden in the 70s. The automatic gear box used by volvo was made by land rover for their v8 which was yet again based on the buick v8s.
My relative had one with a v8 back in the 70s and my dad, uncle and aunt all had an amazon as their first car. I have a torque wrench that has swapped many b20 head gaskets during it's lifetime.

I don't know about the 120S but the 123GT had a built in rollcage. If you felt the roof it was about 4" thick. It had front and rear sway bars, also, I believe they're called ladder bars. On either side of the rear end, near the wheels, they ran forward to the frame. It had a posi track, chrome piston rings. To make it simple, it had the exact same drive train as the P1800.
Forgot to mention, overdrive that you engaged by a switch on the steering column. Dual SU carbs, double brake lines. Not 100% sure but pretty sure it had the drum-discs on the rear wheel. Discs for driving and drums for parking.
Speaking of which, the park brake lever was located between the drivers seat and door. Ergo you could engage it and keep your right hand on the wheel.
I'm sure I'm missing many features.
Bought it for $500 around 1982. Drove it for about 2 years and sold it. Advertised it at $500. Dude shows up, looks at all four sides and says, "I'll take it." He didn't even test drive it. That's when one realizes ya sold it way to cheap.
The thing handle like a gokart. I really regret selling it but the cost to restore it was way too much for me at the time.
At that time I could get an airfilter for my 318 Fury on sale for about $1.49 where as the pair of filters for the 123GT was $35!
In Victoria BC, the wreckers had a deal where for certain makes, they wouldn't bid against eachother when ICBC (the government run insurance company) auctioned off the written off cars. Not only that, I don't recall the exact rules, but on ICBC claims, the body shop was supposed to use used parts of possible. Hence the used parts were about 60-80% of new and with Volvo, that's still pricy.
I recall I once need a phony spoked hubcap for my 80s Newyorker. Called the dealer and it was a hair over $300. So I called a wrecker and he wanted $125. I replied, "that's not too bad considering what a new one's worth."
The wrecker thanks me. Tells most people flip out and call him names I won't text and hangup only to call back sheepishly. He commended me for checking it out before calling him.
Once again I've ventured way off topic. Sorry about that. A bad habit I must try to rectify.

      @robertdeen5591 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I should add, on my 123GT it had a badge that said "Volvo Canadian"
If the meant it was only available up here in the great white north, I don't know. It was an excellent snow car. I once saw a sand truck give up on a hill and back down. I thought what the hell, bogged it in 2nd gear all the way up no problem. Was once told that's why the car was so popular for rally type racing and hence hard to find in a reasonable condition. Really wish I could of kept it. Couldn't afford to restore or hell, even just store it at that time

These cars were common when I was a child. It probably had the B16 engine (75 HP) and 3 speed transmission. This video made me happy but also tearfully sad. Back in 2001 a crock of a person named Jakob Herzog was supposed to do an LS swap to my 1963 Volvo 122S. I had purchased many goodies that would go into the car: custom-spec’d Tremec TR-3550 TKO transmission, Simpson five-point harnesses, Kirkey racing seats/mounts, just to name a few. I’d already installed all the IPD goodies (delrin and urethane bushings, Bilsteins, and the lowered street coil springs), and had a local (Mountain View, CA) shop fabricate a custom adjustable four-link rear end setup (but a Mark Williams 9" rear end was going to be ordered/purchased eventually). Fast-forward to 2002 he comes out of the blue and asks ME (WTF??? 🤔) for fabrication blueprints to do the modifications (this was after the car sat in his hands for ONE YEAR and all he f’in did to it was cut out the trans tunnel and firewall and also the rear trunk area for a custom fuel cell which I had already spec’d). Bascially I got raped by Jakob Herzog, promiser of dreams he was unable to fulfill.

not much rust . just making myself more responsible with cars and then dive into the special ones

Being Swede and living in rural areas when about 12 yrs old (-82), the Amazon with some furry dice hanging on the mirror and some home-tuning was popular as a first cool & cheap car for guys some years older who wanted to be cool..

Awesome Volvo, this guys got a great eye. I had an 84 240 wagon factory Buick diesel. Loved that car. Volvo and Buick must have had something going on. My 66 Volkswagen bug had headlight covers like that.

My first car was a baby blue Amazon 122s that had rust holes in the floor and the original white vinyl seats. My second car was an EK Civic. Amazingly, despite feeling like a tank, the Volvo weighed less than the Civic. Can't imagine what 450hp would be like in one though; mine had 120hp at best, and was practically always sideways. Also, the car in the video is likely a 123GT (122s would be a four-door). Thanks for sharing it
