Highly suggest to balance the variable stroke parts on any engine you make, even if its just for demonstration purposes.
If you dislike suspension glitches you can also use reaction wheels to counteract engine torque, but those will need the gas or electric engines if you dont wanna be insane and use extra piston engines for them.

if you want power efficiency, I suggest not using gears at all
