    A tip with sm trains is they barely ever need more than phys simple 7. The diesel you looked at is designed for phys simple 1, as many trains with simple engines are. Physics settings sometimes break pistons and suspension, but creations with only bearings often can get away with it.

  • @turnerdeedo4633
    @turnerdeedo4633 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +104

    12:25 Ok here's the answers to all of your questions about my train:
    The whole thing is designed to operate on physics 1. Despite how that may sound, it works just fine. There are ways to make basically any build work on physics 1. You just have to design it correctly.
    The massive amount of lag you experienced and the various malfunctions like the doors not opening were because you never turned the physics all the way down. It does say to do this in the description, but I guess you did not read it. :P
    The barrier blocks between the cars are not meant to be removed. They are a normal part of the coupling system. You just delete one of the two blocks and put it back to uncouple, and weld the two blocks together to couple.
    No, the train cars are not meant to be separated before driving the train. The whole thing works as-is. Even longer trains are possible, but one engine and ten cars is the reasonable limit.
    Covered hoppers like the first car often carry grain, but they can be used to transport many other bulk products that need to be kept out of the weather, like plastic pellets, potash, salt, sand, cement, and many others. That one specifically would transport fertilizer.
    I'm pretty sure haybales don't ever get transported by train for various logistical reasons. Why are there bales on my train though? Because reasons.
    The tanker car has the paint scheme of Proko Fuel and Oil company (which is fictional), so yes, it could have cooking oil inside. I was imagining something more dangerous like jet fuel though. :P
    The big yellow area on the last car is inspired by real hopper cars. Some hoppers are designed to be turned completely upside-down by rotary dumpers to unload their contents. These cars are equipped with a rotary coupler on one end, which is able to twist to remove the need to decouple the cars when using the dumper. The colored end of the hopper marks which end of the car has the rotary coupler.
    Oh and the whole train is not meant to be specifically farm supply, but the first three cars are farm-related.

    About the clutch in the last build, its refered to as a double bearing clutch in the community and uses the torque of the engine its connected to while turned off to transfer power through (engine is on when clutch is disengaged, but doesnt add any power to the driveshaft), the only slight issue with them is that you cant pass more torque through them than the torque of the engine connected to them.

    • @ig-rd5923
      @ig-rd5923 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      It was my build, it used 8 bearings in the clutch, so I got 4 times the torque of a regular electric double-bearing clutch. So it is, In fact, not a slight issue.

    • @Ben_Bingo
      @Ben_Bingo 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ig-rd5923yea using more bearings can mitigate this issue (even though you have to use more joints), but I was referring to the double bearings which just use 2, also since an electric engine only has 1000Nm of torque, the clutch with 8 bearings will only withstand as much torque as a controller bearing, but its probably not an issue in your drive train.

    • @ig-rd5923
      @ig-rd5923 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@Ben_Bingo An engine in scrap mechanic, strangley enough, has twice the resitance when off, as it does when powering a bearing forward. Additionally, a regular double bearing has 2 bearings, so a regular electric double-bearing has 4000NM(tested). So one with 8 bearings has 16000NM, which is a lot more than a controller. But yea, I guess you're right, it is no longer a double-bearing if it has 8 bearings lol.

    Hey Kan, I really appreciate you taking the time to feature my Steam Train build on your channel!
    The build is entirely a fully piston-powered locomotive using a system based off the Walschaerts valve gear design as you mentioned. I've set it up so that the 1 key serves as the trigger to activate the pistons. Inside each cylinder, there's a sensor which detects the "valve stem," which in turn initiates the piston's movement.
    I had also integrated low-powered thrusters glitch welded into the boiler. These thrusters are used to replicate the "chuffing effect" to capture that authentic steam train experience.
    Apart from that and the boosting thrusters, it's entirely works off of the pistons.
    Anways, thanks again for giving my creation the spotlight!

    What I'm trying to figure out currently is how in vanilla can we have a logic signal based on if a creation is moving or not. Like, if a car is falling out of the sky, driving, any form of moment as apposed to standing still.
    I'm trying to figure this out cause I want sensor doors that open when you get close to them. . . but only activate when the car is standing still.

    • @dalainawillis507
      @dalainawillis507 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can think of two ways to do this both of them are bad one of them is better I think I haven’t done anything like this but theoretically you could do a logic circuit with an engine and a sensor and make a circuit where it needs to be going a certain speed in the sensor needs to be going on and off at a certain interval or you can probably try to sense the player because he moves in the seat a lot but that wouldn’t be consistent the logic would probably be a bit easier to keep it consistent if you tune it correctly

    • @Hadeks_Marow

      @@dalainawillis507 Allow me to re-explain to goal.
      - No one is in the car.
      - The car is moving. Not from driving, but from not being stationary.
      That includes:
      - Rolling down a hill
      - Falling out of the sky
      - The Driver gets out mid-drive
      The idea is the car doors can only be opened when the car is not moving and no one is inside. (Well, technically, the car doors have a separate way open to enter than to exit, to enter, it's via sensor, to exit, it's via switch hooked up to driver seat). I know this can be easily done with mods, but I want to figure out a vanilla way to have a car door open automatically when approached, but only when the car is fully parked. The issues comes in that any sensor that the player can set off, any terrain piece or structure can set off too. I don't want the door to randomly open. There are plenty of ways to prevent that when you have a passenger. It's when you don't have a passenger that makes it troubling.

    Kan, How about you make a piston engine in whitch pistons are mounted to the crakshaft with two sets of two curved pipes on each side of the piston. Like crankschaft, bearing, curved pipe up, curved pipe to the right, bearing, curved pipe up, curved pipe right, unpowered bearing and the other side of the piston is the same story but backwards. If you set the angles at whitch first two bearings are (first 90 second -90) you can change how far the piston needs to move for the engine to complete one revolution from 2 blocks away from the crankschaft to concentric with the schaft.
    I would say that assuming that the linear speed of the piston is constant, a shorter travel distance of the piston would allow it to complete a revolution is less time making the engine faster. Though I watched your video with a dino and you might put an adjustable encoder on that engine too because I saw a video on the internet of such an engine and it makes me think that lag will be involved and screwing with the engine timing.

    Would a piston engine with 8 pistons 45 degrees offset from eachother work well? Any piston engine pro can answer.

    • @ig-rd5923
      @ig-rd5923 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It would. It would have more points where a piston is in an ideal position, giving smother torque. However, in general, you want to have as few bearings as possible on the crankshaft for lag and torque.

    Check out "Bingo's block and part editor" mod. Adds a tool that allows you to do blueprint editing without exiting the game. I learned about this tool a week ago and it makes building stuff so much easier.
    Some cool tricks you can do:
    - move parts and bodies
    - overlap anything
    - rotate pistons in any orientation (requires it's attachment to overlap it)
    - create 0 width blocks (just make sure you put some kind of weight on them, they are quite glitchy and easy to loose track of (for the lather there is "unknowns tools" which makes them visible and adds other fun tools))
    The shopping cart uses inline bearings on any power source that cancel out their torque. When they are powered they cancel torque creating a free spinning bearing. When off they create high resistance. Works for gas, electric and controllers. With controllers you can even make angle limited free bearings.

      after failing, he's been looking at different piston engine designs
      discovered the trammel gear and explored it, got a dyno for torque readout
      he's mad at that challenge and is gonna destroy it when he's ready
      all it requires is a bit of patience on your part
