- Big Tractor Power is out in the field with a 270 hp WFE 4-270 FIELD BOSS Tractor working on tillage with a 32ft CASE IH Tru-Tandem 330. 2023 marks the 40th anniversary of the 4-270 tractors release. Viewers will follow this big tillage team in the field as well as learning about the tractor's production history, specifications and price tag.

I grew up in Charles City, IA. I watched those tractors being built at the plant. Great machine.
Late 70,s I worked at a white dealership putting equipment together and operating white tractors, the very first white I operated was a 4-150 and I loved it , a couple of years ago I had the opportunity to purchase a 4-150 & I still love it and I take it to the local antique machinery show every August, that's its longest trip every year, and after I purchased I found out that I actually worked on the same tractor years ago when I was in high school, thanks for the video Big Tractor Power
High Schools & Community Colleges were full of them. They weren't worth enough, to spend a lot of $ on.
I was just looking for a 4-270 on TractorHouse last night, now this video makes me want one more.
Howdy from East Texas ! We have a 1977 John Deere 8430 aka "john boy", w 3400 hours. 3rd owner we bought it out of Oshkosh. We pull a bush hog 7 shank parabolic ripper or a jd 220 19' center fold tandem disk. We use it to renovate pastures and Bermuda grass hay meadows for our cow calf operation. Good tractor for us ! Thank you !
I enjoy the history of these tractors and I love watching them work in the fields.

This was my favorite tractor on my uncle’s farm in the early 90’s. The family had three Whites and two Oliver’s. These were good times in my life being on the farm.
That was a great time in farming. Oliver and WFE made solid tractors 👍😁

I sat in a new 4-270 at the 1984 St. Louis farm show. It was quite the machine back then.
Very cool to have seen one new. My local dealer’s biggest sale was a 4-225.
@@bigtractorpower My uncle still has a 4-210 he bought new, he put a Cummins in it about 30 years ago. It has a sweet sound with the straight pipe.

A short story about my experience with a white tractor. In the mid 1980s I was a snow groomer at a ski area in NY and we got a very similar looking White tractor as a demo to use to groom the ski slopes. It had big logging type tires and chains. It was very interesting to operate especially compared to our snowcats that we normally used. I’m guessing they weren’t very successful in the snow grooming field since I never saw another one. Thanks for the video and keep up the great work!

Knew someone in the 80's that ran a 4-180 with tinted windows, and had a small TV with a VCR in the tractor no less. Many around my area found this situation quite odd, needless to say this fella does not farm anymore now. Always kinda liked the look of the White 4wd, and the 4-270 seems to be their best achievement in their production it seems. Good video, great to see these tractors at work, brings back good memories.
White an oliver were the best
@@shaunault7538 Yes, I liked the old Olivers, and some Whites. We unfortunately had neither on my grandfathers farm, did have a fella we knew bale hay for my grandfather with an Oliver 1600, and it seemed a good unit with the baler. I rode on it, did not operate the tractor though. Had a friend though that had an Oliver 1850, White 2-85, and a 2-105 and they seemed to do what was needed. They were unique machines for sure.
Now people just watch TV on their phone lol 😆
I wouldn't say "best achievement" I would say the largest. The best achievement of White was the corn planter followed by the plow.
@@RJ1999x Meant to imply likely their best achievement for their 4wd line that was offered. I knew of many that did not particularly care for the 3208 Cat engine in their 4wd models that preceded the 4-270. Never owned any, can't say by personal experience, just going with what I remember being said once upon a time. Good day to you sir.

Thank you Nico. The 4-270 was the big 4wd for WFE. It’s too bad the 325 did not make it into full production.
Man, the 4-325 would have been a beast!! Too bad it never made it past the experimental stage.
My favorite tractor
We run a 4-225. Biggest load we pull is 16 knife NH3 applicator. Also have an Oliver 2655. Doesn’t see much action anymore but could roll out anytime.
The 4-270 and the A-C 4w-305 are my favorite 4wd tractors

It’s cool to see a white tractor. All I’ve seen is white planters.
Would love to see more of the original Steiger tractors this year, especially the Steiger Tiger IV
I worked for WFE Libertyville, Ill as a prototype build and test technican and the first prototype was the 4-325 that went through many improvement and testing then the 4-270 prototype was built and it went into production.
Do you have any Pictures of them?

@@nellsonstout7001 I did not I was in R&D Libertyville, Illinois as prototype build and test technician, Dean was in Charles City Iowa.
We have a 4-210. IT pulls a Brillion chisel plow and sometimes a 24' Krause disk.
My 4-210 pulls my will rich ripper and 24' amoco disc with a 28' brillion roller. Thing is a beast

All things considered they weee cheap horsepower. Good to see them still working the ground.
We run a 4-210 with combine tires. Has a turbo on the 3208, plenty of power for a 30ft disc and chisel. Always reliable for when the T8.390 has problems

@@bigtractorpower was originally silver, got repainted to gray on the whole hood, stripes are still on the door. Took the back fenders off. Just old reliable.

I had a white 4-270. I sold it to a collector. It was a good tractor, but parts and people who no how to fix them are both very scarce. This one is straight piped. They originally had a big full size muffler. Unfortunately very pricey to replace.
That soil looks pretty rocky , Must be hard on the equipment , Nice old tractor 😎
New York has allot of stone from the glaciers that made the Great Lakes. Good soil but rocks are there. They get rocked picked but a new crop of stones emerges each spring.

Those are a cool beast, much more desirable than any ugly John Deere R series or anything else new.
The stack .. mmm if it was mine... well
That is the factory size stack. They were short.
WFE made some of the best looking tractors to bad there management didn't know squat about business or they would still be around today
WFE went through some tough times. Many factors saw the downfall of the line.
The frame has an interestingly low design, it has a low center of gravity, I think thats why it has more traction compared to the others (for example A-C 4W305)

It is too bad the 4-270 was the last WFE. There was a 325 in the works but because of the farm economy it never came to be.

To my knowledge there are three 325s in existence. I sure would like a chance to film one. I think they are all in private collections and not in the field.

Some neighbors had a white 4wd years ago, seems like it was always in the shop, did they have a lot of trouble with some models?
4-150 was built from a 2-85 with a big cat motor under the hood you could see the down side of that from miles away 4-180 better but top trans shaft turned engine speed almost 3000rpms bearings didn't last long

Yes they were problematic, especially the over/under power shift part of the transmission. Had a 4-150 and a 4-210 on our farm. The caterpillar 3208 sounded cool but was a 2,000 hr throwaway engine. My advice to anyone looking at one of these tractors is to stay away….
Just remember, white scrapped the divisions prototype CVT transmission.
Those would have been very cool tractors to see in production. It’s unfortunate they did not go to market in the 1970’s.

Maybe I'm waxing too poetic, but new 4wd just don't seem the same. New ones lumber and barrel across fields, and this old girl, it looks like she just dances across it.
