      They actually added it back to newer versions with various DVD releases. They removed the scene because children (the target audience) got bored during the test screenings.

    This movie changed my life. Early on I realised nature, sacrifice and being kind to animals were crucial, not wealth. After seeing Pocahontas and The Lion King I saw the footage of the Disney drawing studios and it became my dream to join them. Started art school and music school. Dreams faded and I became a serious lawyer. Sigh. I still draw and I can play all of Disney on piano. But I still regret not having been on the team back then. Dammit.

      @Ducky Mei i'd say, keep going for medicine, they always need people there. But to enjoy life, keep developing your art skills. During law school, I kept writing, singing, drawing, playing the piano. That was what was truely important in the end, the things I wanted to do in my own time. I am doing mostly writing now. Planning on recording my compositions and making my own channel. Life is more than your degree. Like Robin Williams said in Dead Poet Society, medicine and law are nobel but romance, art, poetry etc are life.

    To me, the score to Pocahontas stands as one of the greatest film scores ever written and it certainly is on a level that all other Disney movies, even those made at the time like Beauty and the Beast and Little Mermaid, could never reach. What is so beautiful about this song is its message is "despite the pain, I'm glad I knew you" and that is what makes their love story and this song so beautiful

    I think they made the best Disney couple with this film. I fell in love with their chemistry and their bond, I mean it seems so real, and I love how they recreated the character of John Smith, who's real story was nothing like that. Both Pocahontas and John Smith are history characters who's real story was very different, and definitely was not a love story, literature has romanticized them and Disney made a masterpiece representing what love should be and how should be the relationship between men and nature and other cultures. They did a great work, I would never be tired to rewatch the movie or to listen to the soundtrack. I pray that they will not do the live action, and if they had to, to make it perfect as the cartoon with the same similarities and without referring to the sequel... which is just a mess.

      So true. I didn’t get to watch Pocahontas until I was like 16, but they had been my favorite couple ever since I was a kid, but I had no idea it had a sad ending, so the ending completely shattered and broke my heart, watching of all the Disney couples it just HAD to be my favorite that didn’t get a happily ever after. I think it’s what makes them a more popular couple is because they’re the only one that got a sad ending. I found the reason for the sad ending so infuriating and stupid: the REAL John Smith didn’t stay in the New World due to a gunpowder incident. I seriously don’t get why Disney chose to use one other “historical fact” when the story already very largely ignored the real story. I mean I seriously love how he almost died protecting her dad, truly proving to all those idiots who claim he’s arrogant he truly changed and wasn’t afraid to die for her or anyone she loved. But Disney just HAD to add that last nugget in. I still love the sad ending though, even though in my heart they eventually reunited and got their happily ever after (go f*ck yourself Rolfe)

      Hey now. We forgetting when Flynn died to save Rapunzel and croaked “You were my new dream.” 😭😭😭 But yes, honestly I felt Pocahontas and John Smith had a more mature dynamic and genuinely made me feel they were in love. Like I legit don’t get how some like Rolfe more just because he isn’t racist at first, given Smith was prepared to die for her in the end. Not to mention they let go of each other, knowing they’d probably never see each other ever again. I have YET to see another couple be that in love they “broke up” because how much they loved each other. Legit Pocahontas running after the ship in the end was a cruel joke because I thought she changed her mind and couldn’t go through work being separated from the one person who completely embraced and understood her when almost no one in her village ever did. Legit watching Pocahontas choose Rolfe felt like a massive middle finger to the beautiful love story between Pocahontas and John Smith.

  • @waltymcnalty

      Third favorite. Tbh I feel Pocahontas is a very underrated gem in Disney’s crown. Like Pocahontas and John Smith’s love felt real and more mature than other popular couples like Ariel and Eric, literally falling for him just because he’s a human, Aladdin and Jasmine, who lied nearly the entire time just to get her to like him, or Belle and Beast, given how awful he was towards her and her dad at first. So stupid Poca and John are sadly the only couple that get hated on for something outside of their control.

    It's so hard to lose a parent. Especially, if it was your mom who was the closest to your heart. There are nights when I wake at 2am crying my eyes out, wishing she'd be here to console me and give me sound advise just like she used to. But no matter how much I'd pray for her to be here again... she won't be anymore. 😢 We were like twins, my mom and I. Everything I am now, every life principle I hold dear in my heart, I got from her. There are days when I'd feel lost and be all stubborn, but one of the main reasons why I always get back up is because she told me over and over before to not give up. Her sense of strong will before cancer took her is what keeps me going. She was a fighter, a dreamer, a dear lover of those around her. She always sacrificed everything in her for the good of those that God had placed in her life. She gave her all.
    She was the type to not fully wear her heart in her sleeve the first time you meet her. But the moment she starts to trust you, the quality of love that she could offer is something so profound and incomparable from all of the people that you have met in your life. She really took good care of each one of us. She is the most sacrificial person that I have ever known. And dang, she gives really sound advise! [That's what I miss the most about you, Mama.]
    And then the worst thing came. I saw your body deteriorate as you fought for dear life when cancer cells came alive in your system. Watching your body weaken day after day after day is probably the most cruel thing I have witnessed so far in my 20 years on this planet. I felt in my heart and in my Spirit that you still wanted so much to fight. The only dilemma we had was that your physical body no longer can. You only lived through a life tube, and it was the worst thing ever for a daughter to see her mom go through. 😢
    And so I prayed for God to finally take you with Him. There are days when I'd regret that I ever did because just minutes after that prayer, you started breathing heavily, your oxygen and heart rate gradually dropped and then your breathing stopped. Saliva came out the side of your mouth and your eyes finally closed. 💔
    It's been more than 2 years now since we've lost you. And wow, has it been a journey for all of us. There are days when we miss you terribly. But knowing in our hearts that you're in a much better place can ease the heaviness a bit in our chest. No more walking canes or a wheelchair or an arm sling, you can now run freely and raise your hands up as high as you would want to. No more heavy morphine doses and painful vial shots, you can have your glowing skin back and it is not tainted with black marks from hospital needles whenever you'd be confined for numerous tests. No more sleepless nights because of the immense pain all over your body that even the highest morphine dosage cannot afford to numb you from. No more numerous hospital tubes inserted into different parts of you just to keep you alive, you are alive and well and at your happiest up there without all of them!
    I am eternally grateful to Him for giving you as my mother. There are lots of life lessons I will be taking with me forever because of the quality of love you've shown through your life as a wife, mother and daughter. You're weren't perfect, you were also scarred by life experiences and were pretty guarded on who to let in your heart. But I have seen you at your best, and it is with how you loved and took care of each one of us. YOU LOVED US WITH YOUR ALL. And that is, by far, the most treasured thing that someone could ever do for those that she holds dear.
    This was a very beautiful arrangement. Thank you, Sam Yung. It made me recall a lot of memories with my mom. 💐🌷The whole feel was very nostalgic.

    my god i love this music so much!!!
    it disgusts me how people simply hate the movie because of how inaccurate it portrayed history. but this is a DISNEY film, not a documentary. yes, it was dramatically romanticized for storyboard reasons but the story is still beautiful about how two people find love within each other despite their cultural differences and society's pressures to keep them apart. like romeo and juliet.
    also how can you not fall in love with the music? its so powerful and touches my heart sincerely

    • @kristinahuchison2511
      @kristinahuchison2511 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Same! It really saddens me Pocahontas and John Smith are the only Disney couple that receive actual hate because Disney stupidly based it on a real and unfortunately dark story. Like John Smith is one of the more hated Disney princes, and its very largely because he was still based on a real man who was so awful towards Pocahontas and her people and completely lied about her.
      If Disney had kept this song in, I truly believe a lot more people would like them and not be so judgmental of it being grievously inaccurate. If Disney had just used different names and fixed a few racist issues in the story it could’ve easily been as huge as Disney planned. It’s really sad this movie for some has aged like milk instead of a fine wine

      Omg that part was so sad. I remember watching her chasing the ship first time I watched it, and I was so mad when it was only to say one last goodbye. Like the part he feels her presence one last time, he looked like he was going to start crying right there, if he hadn’t sprung a leak already. He sees what she’s doing, and then thanks her by saying goodbye in her language. Like I’m kinda disappointed neither characters started crying right there as this was truly their last moment together, just the two of them, no one else not even her pets.
      Legit their goodbye in the sequel felt so flat and boring. Like they were bummed they didn’t feel the same way anymore, not disappointed, crushed or heartbroken. I want to throatpunch whoever came up with the sequel’s plot to make it more historically correct instead of just rolling with their own mess. Because all it did was ruin the original movie for the majority that didn’t care about the real story.

    one of the most gorgeous melodies ever. I've always pictured myself walking down the aisle to this. Especially with the first opening notes, I always think that revealing the bride at that moment as she begins to walk down would be really breathtaking. Would be fitting especially as the opening is played when Pocahontas and John first met, a life-changing meeting and crossing of hearts.

      TheCNRProject TheCNRProject TheCNRProject TheCNRProject TheCNRProject TheCNRProject I think it in other way : if you see someone and fall in love with him or her ( depends on gender of yours) then your emotional feelings start to grow and you begin to love that person so deeply with your whole heart and soul and you just don’t need anything as much as be able to see that person’s smile and how the eyes of that person sparkle and that shiny smile as addition and you start to realize that that person is the only one who has your heart ( i mean with it , that you would give everything: soul , heart , your attention and of course love and even you are ready to give your own life for that person ... And what’s the most terrible and saddest here : he/her looks at you and you feel goosebumps and shivering of your body and whenever he smiles at you or simply looks calm down or serious ... that doesn’t matter to you... but you understand he / she can’t be with you for some reason... and the saddest to death thing is that not he or her doesn’t love you , but you can’t stop loving that person and that tears your heart out and breaks also soul in million of tiny pieces with torturing pain and lump start to appear in your throat and you try to hold yourself from crying but you feel like you can’t ...and when you’re around people (whoever they are) you try to smile , to hide all pain , say that all is fine , but when you’re alone and start to cry whenever you think of that person also at night you try to forget about him/her but it’s impossible ...you just can’t either forget or stop loving that person and you know that he/ her is one in million...there are no people like him ( appearance and internal ) all seems not good enough for you and you start to feel like you have two possibilities: to wait until that person may belong to you or forget all things about love ....😢😢😢😢💔💔💔💔💔💔💔😞😞😞

    • @kristinahuchison2511
      @kristinahuchison2511 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Same! I feel a lot more people would like John Smith as a Disney prince if this song wasn’t cut. Legit it gets so annoying seeing fans complaining “He’s arrogant, racist, a jerk, etc” and this song literally crushes all that. Like cutting this song is the equivalent of cutting Beauty and the Beast, A Whole New World or Can You Feel the Love Tonight.
      I found the reason so outrageous: kids during test screenings got bored and fussy. And supposedly it was “too mature” for children. Which is outrageous given Can You Feel the Love Tonight literally has sexual innuendos hidden in it. Or I don’t know, Hunchback of Notre Dame being allowed to play Hellfire, a super dark song about Frollo basically raping Esmerelda and killing her if she refused. Like I get If I Never Knew You isn’t visually entertaining which is what children focus on, but that’s the point. Its focusing on the here and now and Pocahontas and John Smith truly believed this was their last chance to tell each other how much they love each other. Its not about falling in love like nearly every other Disney love song. It’s about how much they mean to each other, and showing how much John Smith has matured by teaching her the importance of letting go, all while cheering her up and comforting her grief and sorrow and feeling everyone hates her: her dad, her tribe, Kocuom, and she thought for sure John Smith now didn’t love her anymore because he’s going to die. Just for him to be beyond ecstatic he got one last time with her!
      Legit A Whole New World has NOTHING on If I Never Knew You. It really sucks not a lot of people know about this song either because even in the anniversary release, I think Pocahontas only got a enhanced edition with the song being added back in, but not theatrically replayed. Legit despite she’s a Disney princess, I feel Pocahontas is so underrated all because her movie is sadly based on a very dark story

      Same here! Too bad for a lot it aged like milk instead of a fine wine. Which really sucks given I feel Pocahontas isn’t one of those Disney movies you really appreciate or understand until you’re older because Pocahontas and John Smith’s relationship was more mature and realistic than most Disney couples. The ending confirmed this as they sadly let go of each other, and made a choice no one ever wants to make. Its also a sad but beautiful lesson that sometimes love doesn’t work out quite the way we want, but despite they didn’t get the ending they wanted, they remained so grateful for meeting each other and creating something so beautiful their love would always burn on in their hearts. Too bad the sequel absolutely destroyed something so beautiful and was a huge middle finger to the the original story’s love and message. PocahontasXJohnSmith4Ever

Beautiful in every way. every song is great in this movie and this song specifically is just so freaking beautiful. Pocahontas will always be my favorite. I cant help but tear up when watching/listening to this movie because it reminds me so much of my childhood.
