I love how when she leaves, he dips his head and kisses her palm. Like, this is clearly a man who expected to die in the morning and had made his peace with that.
"I'd rather die tomorrow than live a hundred year without knowing you" I know this is historically inaccurate but, you gotta admit, that was a beautiful line
Yeah. The true history of Pocahontas is dark, scary, and heartbreaking but I don't associate it with this movie. This is what I wish could have happened. Revisionist history.
@@callanightshade8079 honestly, if they had different names fixed a few racist issues in the story, this could’ve easily been as huge as Disney anticipated. It really sucks the only thing that got in the way was unfortunately its the only Disney movie that was based on a real story that was anything but a fairytale unfortunately
@@somethingaboutsomeone7641 it was realistic, what was between pocahontas and jhon smith was very strong and passionate, very deep...but it was the magic of a first love. it would have never worked for real day to day life because they were too different. jhon smith is an adventurer who can't stay in one place too long or settle and pocahontas is a leader, someone who needs to stay with her people to take care of them. jhon rolf was more like her in that sense, he did wanted to stay and build a stable life with her and have a family. jhon smith will always be pocahontas first and strongest love...but sometimes love is not enough to build a life together.
I can assume the only reason why the sequel was like the sequel was because people got upset that this movie was so historically inn accurate. I don't have to look it up to know that is the reason why. Accurate or not, these two are my favorite.
+Robin Sietsema Unfortunately, the sequel decided to be slightly more historically accurate. And in history, John Smith disappeared from Pocahontas's life only to be seen again much later on after she married John Rolfe.
In my opinion this is one of the loveliest Disney love songs because they're appreciating everything that the other has given them; they have no regrets and even if it was just a transient thing, they have each enriched the other's life so much. Their song is not focused in the moment like most Disney love songs but on all the memories they had and the future they're losing. Just because their true love isn't forever doesn't make it any less beautiful.
I agree! That’s why its my favorite love song. It isn’t about them falling in love with each other like nearly every other song except I See the Light. It’s literally about John Smith was terrified he wouldn’t get the chance to tell her how much he loves her, before she touches him he is literally praying to God for one last chance to see her. I mean the music key is actually from the waterfall encounter, indicating that’s what he’s thinking about before he sees her. I mean what makes this scene even more beautiful is in comparison to other love songs it isn’t bright and cheerful visually, but blue and grey (which is weird why his shirt is white in this scene, almost like the animators forgot to make it blue, but honestly he looks so beautiful in white though) The fact he can’t hold/hug her only rest his chin on her head and touch foreheads says volumes how much he loves her. I always melt when it cuts to the part she’s leaning on his chest and his eyes are cut out, as if she’s too sad to look into his beautiful blue eyes. Also their love is forever, its just their time isn’t infinite.
It pisses me off they cut this song and "When Love is Gone" from The Muppet Christmas Carol. Such beautiful romantic songs all because some old suit thought kids wouldn't appreciate it.
They had to change john smiths whole character and personality. Just so she could fall out of love with him. And fall for john ralph. In this movie. He was bright\wise\caring\ and understanding. In the sequel they made him cocky\arrogant\ selfish\ less understanding. I dont see why they had to ruin their romance in second movie. Just cuz the real life Pocahontas fell for john ralph. Their romace was one of the alltime best romances in walt disney history
agreed, and especially after the scene was already drawn, animated, the song was composed, written and recorded... The movie was 30 minutes shorter than other disney classics, so there's no excuse of time. I'll never understand this bone headed decision and not a single person stopped it from being cut.
I will never forgive Disney for cutting this scene. I’m so lucky I have the dvd version that still has this. Anyone watching this on Disney+ will never know the heartache and love this scene gives.
Same! I have the anniversary edition, despite it’s unfortunately in the original format of the VHS, the colors are off. But the song thankfully was included, along with the original ending reprisal. Imo it was a huge mistake and disappoint the song got cut, given how large of a role it has in the movie, its played several important times, just for the actual song to never appear, and no I don’t count the pop version in the end credits.
Je viens de regarder le film sur Disney+ et j'ai remarqué que la scène n'y est pas ... pourtant j'ai le DVD et elle y est. Je ne comprends pas pourquoi l'avoir coupée, elle est incroyable.
This is exactly why I'm here right now. I'm watching the movie on Disney+ and when this scene came on, and I realised they cut the song, I paused the movie, so I could still experience this song with it! ❤
It's Disney. When they do a Musical Number, the characters enter a completely different time zone, where hours can pass for them, but only seconds in the real world. Kinda like Narnia. That, or they don't show the guards outside just bawling their eyes out.
Pocahontas taught John a lot of things he never would have known had he not found her. She taught him to have respect for people, and nature as everything has a spirit and a name. This showed John that Native Americans weren't the "savages" his boss was claiming them to be, but instead nomadic people who saw beauty in everything Mother Nature has to offer (the sunsweet berries of the Earth, rolling in the riches of foliage all around you).
"Pocahontas, look at me. I'd rather die tomorrow, than live a hundred years without knowing you." If a man could ever tell me this, I think I could die in peace.
I'm about to say something similar to this to someone important to me, weirdly enough I wanted to say it even before I knew about the existence of this scene. I only knew the song from the soundtrack
this song makes me cry because, in possibly their most inaccurate film, they managed to finally capture for the first time, and i think the last time, true love. even as a child, i could understand in my own way, the intensity behind their feelings but now as an adult it holds so much more meaning for me.
So agree! Part of the reason they’re my favorite couple is because they actually had more mature and intense scenes than any other Disney couple. I mean the waterfall encounter alone is the heart of the movie because of how powerful it was, like I seriously dig that it’s an instrumental scene until she ran, like there was much more intensity when neither were speaking. He’s even the first Disney prince who the first thing he asks her is her name, not singing a song about love or dancing with her. That part right there is just so magical. I also noticed they touched each other a lot more than other couples, specifically hugging. I also love how their relationship felt real and genuine as they’re one of the first couples to actually get to know each other first before starting a relationship, and of course they have a disagreement (which was going to happen) and they work through it. Also did you know they’re the only Disney couple aside Rapunzel and Flynn that actually caressed each other when kissing (all other couples just hugged) and that made their kisses more mature and realistic? Also as much as I’m torn about the sad ending, I also feel it fit the maturity of their love, that they had to make a choice NO ONE ever wants to make. When Beast died, Belle begged for him to come back, Flynn died Rapunzel sadly sang her healing incantation for one seemingly hopeless miracle. But despite Smith didn’t actually die, he wasn’t promised he’d survive even if he made it back to London, which added to the impact of saying goodbye because it truly was very possibly their last time together. And you consider If I Never Knew You it just adds to the danger of the probability of him actually surviving or even say their ship got destroyed in a storm like in Frozen. Just so many factors that add to her heartbreaking choice to stay with her people instead
@@kristinahuchison2511 one my favorite underrated moments it's when her father let's John go and they hug. The way he hugged like he never wanted to let her 🥺
@@madisonmason9179 my favorite underrated moment is probably when they’re teaching each other how to say hello in their languages, or even the part when John is freaking out from a talking tree, but then teases Grandmother Willow and Pocahontas is so relieved he’s just rolling with it. Like the part she’s leaning on his shoulder is so adorable because she’s that much in love with him, but knows it’s not gonna be easy trying to tell her dad he’s the one she wants to marry instead of Kocuom. But yeah, the part they hug when he’s freed is so romantic, especially because it wasn’t a kiss. Did you know his position actually changed so he could be touching HER instead of her outfit? Like she was so scared her dad wasn’t going to listen, but stood her ground and in the end he could see how much he was hurting his own daughter. But ultimately John wasn’t like the others, and he almost made a huge mistake in killing her friend. But my overall favorite moment aside the waterfall scene is the sunflower one, which is actually my iPad wallpaper, and the part when Pocahontas is hugging him before If I Never Knew You, because she’s so ashamed she isn’t able to look into his eyes without crying, feeling so guilty about his death sentence.
I disagree this was the last time/only couple that beautifully displayed true love. While it’s definitely one of my favorites, I’d add Hercules and Meg given he gave up basically heaven and being a god for her, Tiana and Naveen as they learn from each other and a little bit about themselves and are willing to sacrifice their dreams for each other, but huge shout out to Rapunzel and Flynn Rider as my other favorite Disney couple. Flynn DIES to save Rapunzel from someone he never actually met but could easily tell how abusive she was, and couldn’t bear to let Rapunzel remain Gothel’s eternal slave, so he cuts her hair knowing he’d die immediately. But yeah, I feel thats partly why Pocahontas and John Smith aren’t as popular is because they have a more mature relationship, given several of their scenes together, especially the ending. But I think something a lot of people don’t realize is they BOTH learn valuable lessons from each other, her getting him to see the world through her eyes, and him helping her understand how deep his love is and death is a part of life, that he’d rather die a better person in love with her than live his life filled with excitement and adventure, but he’d never meet her. Like what did Eric do? Slay an octopus and just rolled Ariel wasn’t a human? Or Aladdin lying nearly the entire time to get Jasmine’s attention?
UrBanPiNkPaNdA I do to. Untill I remember the real life Pocahontas did in fact marry John Ralphe. Damn Disney do not try to be historically accurate After what you did in the first.
"Pocahontas, look at me. I'd rather die tomorrow, than live a hundred years without knowing you." ...how the hell they didn't end up together? Like, Pocahontas 2 is absolutely a joke
John smith is easily the most romantic disney "prince". I mean come on "I'd rather die tomorrow than live a hundred years without knowing you"? That could make anyone melt 😍😍😍
Well, what else can he say, when, as far as he knows, he is going to die tomorrow, and he needs to console his girlfriend? But it is a beautiful thing to say nonetheless.
I would love a man forever if he literally did a John Smith and uttered that line: "I'd rather die tomorrow, than live a hundred years without knowing you" I don't care about the historical inaccuracy or the sequel, these two are so gorgeous together 😘
OH MY God, Yess! 😶😍😍😍 However, all what's on the majority of people's minds now a days is sex. *Shakes head and sips lipton tea* If my future husband did pull a John smith, I might say, "I do" quicker than he expected. 😂😂😂
Since I was a kid, John S. and Phoebus (Hunchback) are the ONLY REAL MEN in Disney Movies in my view, the others are sweet, but to young for my taste 🤣🤣
I’m going to be that person lol. Though the sequel was awful technically the real Pocahontas never married John Smith but instead really did marry John Rolfe.

I’m sure neither of the movies were totally accurate. They’re not meant to be. They’re KIDS MOVIES. They’re weren’t going to include the actual history of the colonists and how the Native Americans suffered. THEY’RE AIMING TO KIDS! I watched it when I was four years old and still love it today as an adult, AS A DISNEY FAN, but I acknowledge history and I’m very aware it’s not an accurate portrayal. But no Disney movie is meant to be.
Can we at least acknowledge that the scene of John Smith looking up to the sky and it suddenly becomes the water Pocahontas is paddling through is one of the most beautiful transitions in any disney movie?
Agree! Also the part they’re looking at the moon during her verse and when she sings his first verse he starts singing “There’s no moment I regret, since the moment that we met, if our time has gone too fast, I’ve lived at last” and it transitions to their happiest memories together (unfortunately without the kiss) but I’m so HAPPY the sunflower scene was in there, it’s always been one of my favorite scenes as a kid and I’m actually getting a tattoo of it

While Pocahontas unfortunately wasn’t as nearly successful as the Lion King or Beauty and the Beast, I feel the percentage that actually hated it was like less than 10% because the sequel received a hellload more of hate to the point Smith is officially paired with her, not Rolfe thank God
I think this scene was never included in first rough cut at all, it was not animated until 2004. This animation was made special for the DVD release as a special feature, just like what they did with "human again" in Beauty and beast

Disney songs used to be like ballads and songs that ordinary people could actually sing but now they are HEAVY with the broadway style. It makes me feel like I’m watching a stage musical now but back then it felt like I was watching a masterpiece of a film.
Disney should have just focused on their own version of pocahontas and did not made a sequel just to follow the history's accuracy I will always be #TeamJohnSmith
Does anyone else feel as though they mixed up the personalities of John Smith and John Rolfe in the second movie. John Smith wasn't as cocky in the first movie, he was understanding and open to learning about her culture. He even wanted to stay with her in the end but he had to leave to save his life. But in the second movie he was extremely cocky and more interested in his promotion and having her as a trophy wife. Similar to how John Rolfe portrayed himself in the beginning of the movie.
That second movie scarred me for life. Not only did they want her to pick John Rolfe, BUT THEY MADE HER CHOOSE BETWEEN THEM. That scene when she hugs John Smith and runs to the other bastard should have never even existed. #teamjohnsmith
@@christinemartin1352 I think I read somewhere that he had some stints on Broadway before he became an actor and Mel Gibson revealed on the Wonderful World of Disney they had to alter and change the music and tone quite a bit so he could do it right and sound purer, but he managed to do it fantastically.
Pocahontas is the most empathetic and passionate princess... The way she looks at him, embraces him, looks for his lips... This scene deserved to be included. So perfect and sweet...
I know right? Come on, admit it, Pocahontas and John Smith had a lot of sexual tension and passion for a Disney couple. Legit the way their positioned and acted around each other in several scenes proved they had a more mature relationship than most couples
@@kristinahuchison2511 I somply love her. She's so beautiful inside out. Maybe the most underrated princess from the Disney Renaissance and for a sad reason of course 😞
@@Aight7 yes! I don’t get why some people call her boring or “too serious” given she literally complained Kocuom was too serious and stern, and that’s mainly why she refused him as a husband. I find her very similar to Ariel, wanting to explore and see what’s outside of her village. And she also struggles with her loyalty to her people and being in love with someone who doesn’t try to change her into someone else, like her dad and Kocuom did. If anything she’s able to help both sides see themselves as equals. Like what did Ariel do? Disobey her dad every way possible just for a guy she hardly knew and had a crush on? Sadly, the main reason why Pocahontas and her movie is severely underrated is because she’s still based on a real woman who’s life was basically a living hell when the English came to her land. I’m not kidding, I knew the real story as a kid before even watching the movie. I remember being super disappointed Pocahontas and John Smith definitely weren’t lovers, let alone even the same age, and she married a different John in reality. But I digress. If anything it really sucks how much hate John Smith gets as a character, and it’s very largely because he’s still based on a terrible man. Like if their names were different, 90% of Pocahontas’s problems (specifically racial issues) would be solved. And its really sad how it’s slowly decayed overtime, but a movie like Hercules has been growing in popularity and people claim “We all know the actual mythology is grievously inaccurate to the Disney movie” but Pocahontas gets all the heat and hate because “She was still a real person, like it or not” She was always my favorite princess, and I always thought she was a lot more beautiful than Ariel, Belle or Jasmine tbh, especially her gorgeous hair. And I find her story really relatable, about struggling to fit in with her people while being very close with someone she knew they didn’t like, she just couldn’t figure out how to show them he wasn’t like the others, and truly and deeply cared about her and her tribe, going so far as to almost die to protect their chief from his own men. But no, him being racist at the beginning is too large of a problem to ignore, despite he changes a lot earlier than Aladdin does, who took the entire damn movie to stop lying to Jasmine. And its really sad and rather alarming to see how many people would rather date a liar over someone who was a bit of a jerk at first, but instantly accepted he was wrong and immediately changes his beliefs and ways to the point he literally argued with his boss about the war. I have a rewrite of Pocahontas in the works if you want to check it out :)
@kristinahuchison2511 What a mature, sensitive and empathetic reply! My guess is that, with the elements they got, Disney with Pocahontas really tried to show that in unity and perseverance future can chance, despite an ugly past made of horror and historical depressive moments. Of course if J. Smith was not J. Smith but a brand new name and characters the destiny of this beautiful (and versatile, in terms of age) masterpiece would have been different. But people don't go so deep into diving and in all of this, history and pain are in the middle. Native Americans are to this day, in my opinion a minority that is the most disrespected despite long time ago being the majority of the beautiful country that is America today. So let's say that is a delicate topic. This being said, if only the matter wasn't this intricate, it would have been wonderful if people saw the beauty in the message the company tried to portray: despite our differences, despite what sadly separates us, love can break the chains of evil, even the unthinkable ones. You're right, the characters needed to be together to show that, just like in the lion king 2, love can overcome hatred, racism, supremacy and injustice. Love triumphs in the storm. The colors of the wind they showed us, needed a grand finale. My favorite princess is Ariel but right after her, the maturity of Pocahontas always catches my attention, from the way she's characterised (like I specified in the main comment), to the morale of the movie. Just like you with our native American princess, , to me Ariel is the bridge between diversities and the exploration of the new world, a motif of personal growth and wisdom. Ariel represents, to me, the demonstration that following your "gut" feeling isn't always wrong (unless you sign a contract made up by a stranger with tentacles 😂) and that the old of the past, the made up lies of prejudices can be broken through curiosity and innocence of heart. Thank you for this comment. ❤
@@Aight7 well, I don’t hate Ariel or anything, as I know a lot of people really love her passionate, yet curious and quirky side, and not letting her dad deter her from what she wants. My only question is why so many people love her, but then proceed to call Pocahontas too serious or boring? Ariel imo literally wasn’t afraid to keep disobeying her dad and didn’t fear his temper until he destroyed her treasure trove, which pushed her to believing he hated her and would be much happier with someone who didn’t even know she existed, let alone her species. For crying out loud, even in the live action movie, they confirmed that Athena was killed by humans, so why would Ariel still be so curious about a species that killed her mother? I know she felt she just didn’t belong in the sea and felt such a powerful connection to the human world. But I feel in the sequel she doesn’t really try to learn more about them, simply becomes a queen and a mother. I honestly believe the main reason why she’s still so popular is because she’s a mermaid, as she’s more very largely marketed as a mermaid instead of a human. And I do understand the primary reason why Pocahontas is kinda in the middle when it comes to popularity is because of how awful the real story is, I feel a lot of people forget how powerful she really is. She struggles the entire movie of being true to herself and satisfying her father and people’s expectations of her by being forced to marry a respected warrior who she knew she could never love. The reason why she’s able to befriend and fall in love with John Smith instead is because she could tell how similar he was to herself, and didn’t see him like her people did. And she loves how he completely embraces her as she truly is and doesn’t try to get her to be someone else. But ultimately, she was the first princess to stop a war on her own and actually save her man, being the hero in her story, not John. Even in the end, she made the heartbreaking decision of staying with her people over being with someone she didn’t want to leave, and really wanted to see his world. She felt like her people didn’t really understand her, but she still cared about them and just didn’t have the heart to leave them for a little while, fearing she was endangering them if she left to pursue her happiness. And I admire she doesn’t choose a man she didn’t know for long over her people she had a duty to protect and lead one day. Even in the sequel, I love how she was willing to risk her life and possibly never seeing them again to create peace. The part Nakoma cried about very possibly never seeing her best friend ever again was really heartfelt and one of the few scenes in that movie that didn’t have me screaming in rage. I personally don’t find Pocahontas boring as a character, as she’s very strong and has character growth as well. I just feel her movie is a lot deeper and mature than most are willing to admit. One of my Pocahontas friends even admitted she actually loved the sad ending of Pocahontas, because it proved the romance wasn’t the point of the movie. And while I disagree, I slightly appreciate its a different kind of happy ending. Pocahontas really wanted to be with John more than anything, but she loved him too much to let him die in her land when he had a chance to recover if he went home. Her happiness was making sure her people remained safe and peaceful with the English, but ultimately making sure John got better, even if the price was never seeing him again. Like, what happened if Ariel discovered being a human wasn’t everything she imagined and chose to stay a mermaid instead? Would Eric have abandoned his kingdom to be with her? And that’s something I really loved about the ending of Pocahontas, after she sadly declined his offer, he immediately chose to stay because he didn’t want her to make such a difficult decision of feeling she was being forced to choose between her people and him, he was completely ok with dying so she didn’t have to make that choice. While with Rolfe, I really don’t buy their romance at all, and it felt his choice to dump everything just to be with Pocahontas felt he didn’t really comprehend how much he was going to have to learn and change to be able to live like her people. Let alone he doesn’t even bother to get to know her as a person, making the movie that much more irritating. While her romance with John Smith, I always loved how it didn’t automatically begin as a relationship. Yeah they definitely were entranced by their beauty, but their love truly comes from them actually getting to know each other a little better and learning valuable lessons from the other. Like a lot of people always claim “John only liked her beauty and was going to shoot her at first” and proceed to forget about this song and the ending entirely, including saving her dad’s life. I’m not trying to bash other couples, as each have their own dynamics and morals and stuff, but I don’t get why Aladdin and Jasmine or even Hercules and Meg are a lot more popular than Pocahontas and John Smith, given how much Aladdin and Meg lie and manipulate Hercules and Jasmine. And for whatever reason John being racist is the worst sin imaginable and is a completely unforgivable crime? Despite he even argued with his comrades about the war, saying the natives aren’t savages and can be trusted. Just don’t understand what else he had to do in the movie to prove he deeply and truly regretted how he acted before and really does want to help make things right by helping create peace
We gonna ignore they almost kissed one last time before stupid Nakoma interrupted? He literally kissed her hand before she left, that had to sting like crazy they didn’t even get a farewell kiss
Fun fact: Gibson actually provided the singing voice for his character. I find that very admirable, when people who are not trained singers fully embrace the role.
Actually most Disney VAs actually sing I believe for their characters. Pocahontas unfortunately was sung different. But I don’t care if he didn’t sound British enough, Mel Gibson had a beautiful deep voice.
The contrast between the scene in the song 'Just Around The Riverbend' when Kocouam stretches out his hand to hers and Pocahuntas refuses and in this song 'If I Never Knew You' when John Smith stretches out his hand to his and she accepts it... I was weeping
Actually I always melt when he gives her hand a gentle kiss, then sadly vanishes, showing how gentle and kind he was in comparison to Kokoum who had his hand out as if expecting her to automatically take it, in other words didn’t really care or consider how she felt. The fact its both his hands holding hers gives me that he wants to hold/touch her as much as possible and her hand is like a flower, so beautiful and delicate
Yup! They call this a "leitmotif." You can actually hear it in several places where they're together, including at the very end as they're saying their last goodbye. Then when he gets to the ship and we get that final moment, it morphs into "Colors of the Wind"- magical!

@@yijuglee9916 hi there! Yes, I am currently working on a rewrite for Pocahontas on my Wattpad account. The basic idea is it’s basically the movie with new scenes and such added in. I haven’t actually written much yet because of the writing style I’m using, but I’ll be sure to provide a link or title you can check out my work in progress if you’d like!
This song is so sad and yet so sweet, because you can tell how scared he is, and as she walks away, the reality of his situation comes back to him, and yet he KEEPS SINGING, because he knows he's probably going to die tomorrow, and neither of them can think of any way to keep him alive, and yet here he is singing about how GRATEFUL he is. How grateful he is to have met this girl who makes him feel alive, after all the adventures he's been on. And Pocahontas is now realizing that the world is so full of hatred and rage and lies, because she's still just a child, and having this tragedy brought down on her like that is horrible. She doesn't want to leave him, she said, and yet these whispers left behind will always be there reminding her of him, and it's heartbreaking. They both love each other so much that, John especially, would let himself get killed the next day, because if he had never met her, he would have never known of innocence and the value of life and the precious thing that is love. Disney did this so wonderfully, especially the animation. You can see the emotions in his face as he says all these things, tells himself that everything will be ok, because he met her. It's so sad that they took this song out, because where else can you find such a heartbreaking love story as this one?
That is a great interpretation of this scene! I think that as precious and beautiful that this song is, it is too sad. I like to think that Disney originally omitted this song because this feeling. If you really listen and understand the meaning of his song, it's depressing level tragedy. Similar to Aladdin's "proud of your boy". But I always wondered why this credits song was never sung in the movie as well
+Timothy Humbane I think the end credit version was a nod to how close the song made it to being in the movie. Like they obviously still had really strong feelings for it, because of that, and during the actual scene in the theatrical version, the instrumental plays in the background.
+Timothy Humbane they took it out because the test audiences didn't respond well to this scene. The producers really loved this song and wanted it to be in the original version, but took it out thinking that children would be bored with it if they left it in.
Same! Honestly they literally have the most beautiful romance of any of the other couples aside Rapunzel and Flynn Rider. The fact its more focused on their relationship instead of colonialism just makes it that more beautiful.

@@sunsetwilde also its literally a Disney movie. I do agree that it definitely should not have been based on a real story, but the point is John was willing to accept he was so wrong about how he viewed people like her. The movie isn’t meant to represent how awful colonizers actually were towards Native Americans. The point is he was willing to learn from his mistakes and try and convince his comrades to do the same. Not all Europeans were awful towards them, and the point of his character development is to show it wasn’t too late for him to become a better man. He clearly felt so awful and embarrassed about how long it took him to see he was the savage one, not Pocahontas’s people. If you actually listened to the song, you’d see and hear in his voice he deeply regrets how he used to see the world, and that’s why he loves Pocahontas so much. Because he knows how hateful and unchanged he’d still be if they never met. So stop trying to b*tch about actual events and just enjoy the video or leave.
It's better to find out the truth yourself then expect someone else to tell it for you I assume the creators didnt know fully about the story of Pocahontas
How this could be rejected by initial audiences throws me to this day. It's one of my all time favourite Disney songs, thank god the appreciation for it has developed over the years.
Unfortunately, the test audiences were literally kids, like 3 year olds. The song isn’t like previous love songs which are visually entertaining, its meant to focus on the here and now as both really thought this was their last time together. Plus it has a more mature tone because it’s not about falling in love, rather just how much John really loves her, and doesn’t even want to imagine a life never meeting or loving her. Plus it also is meant to be sweet yet soothing as Pocahontas feels everything is her fault and everyone including John hates her. But that’s not true at all! He’s even more in love with her than ever before, and would do anything to protect her! But oh course little kids obviously weren’t going to understand the more mature tone of their relationship, especially with the sad ending having a more realistic and mature tone. All Disney couples except Pocahontas and John Smith got happily ever afters. Cutting this song had several huge mistakes, but the worst is I really believe if it wasn’t cut a lot more people would like John a lot more as a Disney Prince instead of constantly complaining how arrogant and cocky he is. Does he look like a f*cking colonizer in this song or when he took a bullet to save her dad?! Did you know Part of Your World was so close (and I mean really close) to being cut from the Little Mermaid for the same reason? Howard Ashman fought like hell to keep it in, and it ended up sparking a Renaissance! So why the heck Disney didn’t learn from the first time they almost made that mistake?! Worse is Pocahontas’s movie is actually shorter than the others, which I seriously don’t get why
@@PupRiku well, Little Mermaid wouldn’t have been as successful imo. The song made Ariel the first Disney princess whose dreams weren’t purely about a man. Heck, the song was ordered to be cut, and she was going to have to have a song about desiring Eric. The song is literally what launched the Renaissance. What I’m saying is imagine how much better Pocahontas would’ve done back then if the song wasn’t cut? Which is so stupid why it’s not even available on Disney+
NO NO NO NO THIS SO SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE ORIGINAL! THIS BIT HERE IN THE RIVER 3:50 IS LIKE PARALLEL TO JUST AROUND THE RIVER BEND WHEN SHE SEES HERSELF WITH KOCOUM AND NOW SHE REALISES HER PATH WAS JOHN SMITH AND SHE SEES IT NOW YES THIS BIT I FEEL IS SO IMPORTANT IT SHOWS SUCH AN INTIMATE SIDE TO POCAHONTAS AND JOHN SMITH THAT YOU DON'T SEE THAT MUCH IN THE FILM AND IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL W OW
It was removed because although older audiences liked it, they thought it was too mature for the child audiences. It was a good song for the plot and really made their separation and the sequel all the more heartbreaking for them.
Let's just all pretend that Pochahontas II never existed at all shall we? I think we can all agree here that none of us really care about the historical accuracy of this story...
Historical accuracy my balls, sorry, but you can't just have this wonderful couple and then disgrace them with that awful sequel. They clearly missed John's "I'd rather die tomorrow than live a hundred years without knowing you"
Pocahontas II fucked me up and I watched it when I was 20! I know happily ever afters don't really exist but to see it destroyed in one of my favorite childhood movies killed another bit of the child left in me. Wah.
That's what I do. Because there wasn't a second movie. There should of been so we could see Pocahontas and John Smith get married. But, we can just infer😂😂😂
I love the fact that, when Pocahontas saw herself with John Smith on the water, she gave her hand and let John kiss it. It shows that, at this point in her life, she finally found somehow whom she entrusted with her heart. While in the beginning, where she also saw herself with Kocoum on the water, Kocoum asked for her hand but she didn't gave it to him until he disappeared.
Same! That part is so adorable, showing she couldn’t go through with marrying someone she would never love the same way, she just didn’t know how to tell him no. While John Smith loved her exactly as she was and loved her even though he was going to die. Honestly the way he holds her hand is like it was a delicate flower, giving it a gentle loving kiss before sadly vanishing as if to say “I’m sorry for breaking your heart, I will always love you” This is something no one has noticed yet: before this scene (not in the video) she tells Nakoma “All of this happened because of me. And now I’ll never see John Smith again” this implies she was actually scared of seeing him one more time because she was so scared he would blame her for his death sentence or didn’t love her anymore. She’s so overwhelmed with grief and sadness, notice when she first enters the wigwam, his head keeps lowering because he has no desire to see whoever is there, but the moment he recognizes her his eyes lit up just like the first time he looked at her! She immediately breaks down and even snaps out of sadness everything would’ve been better if they never met. He was trying to cheer her up by literally joking about dying because all he wanted was to see her smile one last time! She’s so overwhelmed with grief and guilt she lets her frustrations slip a little. I just love how this song is like soothing a deep burn. Its so gentle, comforting but ultimately loving! It isn’t about kissing the girl, a beauty finding goodness in the beast or discovering a whole new world, or even can you feel the love tonight. It’s about if they never knew each other, how they completed each other in ways no one else ever did and their love is literally based on understanding and appreciating their differences!
@@cellytron I mean, this song sadly wasn’t in theaters. But yes, that moment of contrasting her letting John take her hand when she refused Kocuom just shows how much she truly loves John and vice versa. Imo the 2 scenes are meant to reflect how Pocahontas sees each man: Kocuom expected her to marry him and didn’t really care or consider her feelings, while John loves her so much and she is so precious to him, but he’s so sorry for breaking her heart as shown when he disappears
@@kristinahuchison2511Do you bet Kocoum's crush love for Pocahontas was actually his *downfall* when Thomas shot and killed him when he tried to kill John from taking his fiance away from him?
I always laugh when people are always "they never loved each other in real history bla bla bla it's not accurate! This movie is horrible!" There is literally a talking tree in the movie and you're going on about the accuracy of their relationship? Who cares, it made a great and tragic story and I love them!
I think lot ppl who know real story for pocahontas just think this movie is so bad because real story is so cruel. i loved movie when i was young but when i was older and did read real story i can't just stop laughing how Americans making them look good what they did.
I agree! The animation is so beautiful here as it’s focused on his eyes and eyebrows. I ALWAYS melt at the part when she’s leaning on his chest and his eyes are cut out as if she’s too sad too look into his beautiful blue eyes. I admit I wanted a scene where his jaw isn’t in it either, but I get the point is he’s looking at her even when she can’t look at him. That’s why “Pocahontas look at me” is just as important as the rest of the quote BECAUSE he can’t hold/cradle her or touch her with his hands and can only hope she’ll look at him. The line “If I never held you” is when she wrapped her arms around him and he’s emoting he so badly wants to cradle her in his arms, showing he is here and will protect her from any danger. The part she’s leaning on him she’s actually resting beside his heart, and I can imagine she can feel the heat and heartbeat, as if his heart is on fire for her and that’s what fuels it, warming her cheeks. Plus I also LOVED that they got his shirt wrong in this song. Not gonna lie he looks heavenly in white especially with the sleeves down AND you can even see part of his pectorals! The scene Meeko is cuddling on his leg for a while I thought for sure you could see a part of his abs, but alas no. Plus the color palette used is so beautiful (except the part But still my heart is saying we were right, sorry but he looks like a ghost, I almost had a heart attack the first time I saw it)
as someone who had trauma in their childhood and didn’t receive love, John smiths words hit so hard as a kid. I used to imagine my future partner and finally feeling love. I totally forgot about this song as a teen and adult and now rediscovering it, having loved and lost someone, this song hits even harder. because even though I can’t be with him anymore… I will always be grateful to the one who came along and loved me. ❤
Outside the context of history, the way this story was written was extremely intimate, passionate, and dreamy. This entire duet between John and Pocahontas is exxxtrreemmmely passionate, but the way it was written and staged, the obvious love between them is so breathtaking. This is what love can be. A lot of people will be like “oh, its just a movie” but listen- love can be like this. A feeling that is so passionate. I’m just upset that I found this out so many years later. This duet really shows how passionate their dynamic is. Just so much chemistry gone because they cut this out.
I agree so much. I absolutely hate it whenever I see some dumbass claiming the movie was better without it because of them not having enough time for a song. Since when is a song’s time logic relevant to the story’s time logic? Colors of the Wind literally shows her bending time just to show him a constellation, hence it would’ve taken FOREVER to get through it with all the running around they did. For a long time the waterfall encounter was my favorite part, still is because how beautiful and intense it was. But this is what I consider the second heart of the movie. Without it, it completely chopped out a different side of John Smith, considering this song is very similar to CotW where its his turn to show how wrong she is about never meeting each other. I also really love how it isn’t visually entertaining like every other Disney love song, it’s literally focused in the here and now as Pocahontas can’t stop crying and he’s comforting her through his deep base voice. Eric needed a singing crab, Beast needed a singing teapot and Aladdin needed a genie (disguise) and a magic carpet. All John Smith needed was a pair of shackles. And that’s what makes this song even more saddening yet beautiful especially in V2 “If I never held you…” because he is emoting to how badly he wants to hold her in his big strong arms, showing he will never leave her and will ultimately protect her from any danger, but all he can do is be there for her. Especially the part he headtouched her and is freaking nuzzling with her! His wrists are itching so much, his hands are probably going numb and he’s probably dislocated his shoulders having to lean that far just to touch her, but he doesn’t give a sh*t about his physical pain because not to touching her hurts way more. But yes the duet is when I really lost it. I don’t even mind it reusing previous scenes in the movie because it shows they sadly can’t make anymore memories, but they’ll never forget the love in these. How anyone likes her with Rolfe more is beyond me. Smith almost died taking a bullet for her dad, while Rolfe flat out kept trying to change her into who he wanted
I wish they had kept this not only because it's so beautiful and an amazing song, but because it brings to so much to John Smith's character. Remember at the beginning of the movie when he's watching everyone say goodbye to their loved ones and he's only known as this absolute beast? All the sudden he's become this passionate man who realizes he was wrong and he's suddenly willing to give his life up to someone else and he no longer acts out of vanity like he use to.
Which is a beautiful thing but how does he know that Pocahontas didnt get lost while he was being the beast & needs revival like in what dreams may come
I agree. I mean aside he’s a mini celebrity and undoubtedly a ladykiller he doesn’t really have anyone close. I mean in the scene when she asks if he’ll go home, and he responds he doesn’t really have a home, I’m a bit bummed she doesn’t ask if he had a family that misses him, and maybe he reveals he was an orphan and that’s why he joined the military, a great way to explore the worlds and even made a name for himself, despite now it’s in a way meaningless because his response secretly indicates as long as he’s with her he’s happy. Watch any scene after they met he isn’t with her, he RARELY smiled which shows how much his heart longs to be with her
@@divinitycarson7067 “Lost forever” is such a sad line as it emotes to him being the thing the spinning arrow was pointing to the entire time. I’m kinda bummed she doesn’t say anything like “I knew it was you” he says “What did you say??” and she shyly responds “Oh nothing” And it does kinda relate how in their separation they feel incomplete because their hearts long to be with each other
I know this isn't historically accurate at all, but this film still tugs at my heartstrings and I wish they would've kept this. It's such a tender moment and speaks to those first loves that don't work out but teach us how to love and appreciate it. ❤
I say its a mature song that unfortunately sometimes love doesn’t work the way we want. Like this song made the ending a million times sadder. Like Disney deliberately dialed up the romance and tricked us into thinking they could be together after her dad spared his life, just to shatter their happily ever after with Ratcliffe unwilling to back down and he made the heartbreaking decision to sacrifice his life to save her dad’s instead Also I wouldn’t say “first love didn’t work out” because then you make it sound like you don’t mind she chose Rolfe instead. They clearly wanted to be together more than anything in the end, but she loved him too much to let him die when he might live if he went back home. He literally tried insisting he wasn’t leaving her side when she said her people needed her more for now. But she wanted him to live, and she so badly wanted to go with him, but gave up a golden opportunity to make her dreams a reality for the greater good of her people.
Imo they are the most grown and hottest disney couple..like john was built, and pocahuantus had curves for days.. Theyre hot..its a good thing they aged her up for the film
[Smith] If I never knew you If I never felt this love I would have no inkling of How precious life can be And if I never held you I would never have a clue How at last I'd find in you The missing part of me In this world so full of fear Full of rage and lies I can see the truth so clear In your eyes So dry your eyes And I'm so grateful to you I'd have lived my whole life through Lost forever If I never knew you [Pocahontas] I thought our love would be so beautiful Somehow we made the whole world bright I never knew that fear and hate could be so strong All they'd leave us were these whispers in the night But still my heart is singing We were right [Together in Round] If I never knew you (There's no moment I regret) If I never knew this love (Since the moment that we met) I would have no inkling of (If our time has gone too fast) How precious life can be (I've lived at last...) [Smith] And I'm so grateful to you I'd have lived my whole life through Empty as the sky [Pocahontas] Never knowing why [Together] Lost forever If I never knew you
The fact he NEVER cries either, oh man how strong he is while his heart is completely torn. Honestly the scene when he’s released and hugs her I’m surprised he doesn’t tear or when he let go of her hand in the end, you see him close his eyes as he’s too sad too look at her, so disappointed she chose not to go with him.
I truly think Pocahontas is very underrated among Disney movies. Sure, it fucks with history, but it's not based on Pocahontas' actual life, it's based on her legend. And it actually sticks pretty close to the 'legend' of Pocahontas, if not the the life of Pocahontas. This is a lovely song, but I can understand why they cut it. Mel Gibson has a surprisingly good singing voice. I know he sang earlier in the movie, but this shows off his talent more. And Judy Kuhn, of course, what can you say that hasn't already been said.
Nearly every Disney movie fucks up with history :) So whats about the hunchback or anastasia, Pocahontas is the closest because the persons she met are the real one. In the hunchback there even never existed someone like foebus... But juts lets enjoy this faboulos movie and the great massage he tells us :) Btw sry for this try of english :)
The problem is that Native Americans were practically wiped out and are still treated like shit, a lot of their historical sites are overrun by the government and defaced, like Mount Rushmore. It’s sort of disturbing you would take the story of a 12 year old girl from a group of people who are still oppressed and turn into a romance between her and some old drunkard who made up the “the legend of Pocahontas”, when the reality is that Matoeka was kidnapped, her husband murdered, and her father blackmailed into trying to pay her ransom over and over without the settlers ever letting him see his daughter again, and then she was shipped off to England to be forcibly married and raped by John Rolfe, just to appease the royals that the Natives weren’t being mistreated by forcing Matoeka to pretend everything was fine until she dies away from her homeland. Like… yeah, I see the big problem with that. Anastasia is about the only animated movie I could say that lands in that historical fantasy genre, and it doesn’t feel nearly as icky or disrespectful as Pocahontas.
This made me hate the second movie even more, because this song showed how romantic these two were, the other two in the sequel which won't be named showed no signs of a love building up in the movie. These two John Smith and Pocahontas will always be my winning couple no matter what really happened
me too i hate the second movie because i mean jonh and pocahontas forever but well that what happen in real life.. because you do know this happen in real right?
Exactly! This song pretty much explains why Rolfe never stood a f*cking chance with her. How the f*ck both Pocahontas and John Smith completely forgot If I Never Knew You is beyond disrespectful and insulting. A song literally about how alone and empty you’d be if you never met, and how you completed each other through your differences!
honestly, i dont know how she ended up loving the other john. Here, you can see the love. The animators do such a good job at showing that in every little look and movement, the forehead touch, the hand kiss, everything. With the other guy, it's sort of like "oh yea i love her" from one scene to the next. I understand if she tried getting over smith because she thought he was dead so she wanted to move on with her life and not get tied down to the past but whem she found out he was alive, how did her heart not flutter like it did before?? The chemistry between the two was way betger than her and rolfe. I mean, he was pretty rude from the beginning. And i dont care about that "historical accuracy". Since when did disney care either. I really wished smith ended up with her...
i watched this movie again recently after almost more than a decade and as i'm older i gotta say their chemistry was like off the hook (for a cartoon it was REALLY intense) which is probably why i loved them as a kid, and still do till now. this was the first romance i got invested in lmaoo
heypeaches * Low key wish they didn’t make the second one so they could change it 😂, I want a remade sequel with Mel Gibson playing John Smith, the sequel John sounds not right 😂😩
@@theladyprincess same. I watched both the original movie and the sequel again yesterday and now I am so pissed off that John Smith and Pocahontas didn't end up together. They had such a great chemistry
Briana Tudose honestly even after all these years those two still give me all the feels that personally i don’t think i’ve felt as much with another couple from a disney movie
I feel like the writers tried to make Pocahontas and John Rolfe's chemistry in the style of the Anastasia and Dimitri's development (in the Anastasia movie), since John Rolfe started their relationship being rude and sexist and a lot worse, but.... They kinda forgot(? they've already gave us this beautiful and wonderful story beetwen Pocahontas and John Smith, can't be beaten that easily
Sequel rewrite: John Smith is taken to London where he's given medical treatment, all the while, he can only think of Pocahontas and his love for her. In time, Smith gets better and is determined to reunite with Pocahontas immediately, he returns to Virginia, they reunite and stay together forever. The End.
I agree! That’s part of what I’m making in my part 2. He literally feels her everywhere, in the wind, the stars, the healing ointment she gave him, even she dominates his dreams, and he vowed he isn’t going to let a stupid bullet wound separate them. And unfortunately while his recovery is taking longer than he hoped, he’s heard word the king stupidly believed Radcliffe’s lies, and as much as he just wants to hold her again, he makes the heartbreaking decision to stay and keep an eye on him and let people believe he died, including her.
@@kristinahuchison2511 Disney, you made my childhood golden with so many beautiful films, now that you could do such a terrible thing, I am absolutely disappointed in you.😔😢
If we wanted a historically accurate presentation, we wouldn't even watch Disney movies, okay? So yes, we get it that originally Pocahontas was very young and was never in love with Smith. But that's history - in which this animation was based on, but NOT entirely the same thing. In this media, they made us believe that the two of them were in love with each other...but then to suddenly turn around and tell me "lol no we were kidding, it was a one time thing, Pocahontas is in love with this other dude" which kind of shove some BS into our throats just because they think we'll take it no problem. But this kind of thing ruins everything the first movie was ever created for. Which is why, I take this first movie as a stand alone and why Pocahontas 2 never existed to me.
Honestly, I would rather read about history or watch a more accurately presented work than this. Disney animated movies were created to make magic happen...which is one of the greatest things I look out for when they release a new work. Accuracy went out of the window from the get go with their first princess movies - Snow White? If people knew the original work, it's not as happy as the animated movie so I have no idea what Disney ate to let the people who kept complaining about the inaccuracy of Pocahontas to get to them. I mean they worked so hard on the first movie, to let outsiders to get to you means you've lost your original purpose and it's not your work anymore, it's someone else's.
to those people it's like watching Hercules for appropriate Greek mythology... for one Hercules is Roman.. as well as Cupid.. the Greek names are Heracles, and Eros. As well as Hera wasn't actually his mom, in either Myth, but she hated and constantly tried to kill him (not Hades) throughout his lifespan :P because it was a greek tragedy D;
Because the new CEO laid off all the animators that did THEE best work in these movies and in the industry to merge Pixar with Disney and bring about 3D movies you see now. They're more into the new modern generation rather than the classic fairy tale genre and would prefer to bring about Miyazaki films too--anime and 3D movies generate more profit since that's the current trend.
because the last animation movie they mad, did so badly compered to what they thought, that they released that that kind of art is not working anymore, cause when most adult see a traditional drawn movie they thing "for kids" but when they see a 3D movie they think "an adult can watch this" regardless of the type of movie. so Disney releasing where the money at went in that direction, and if you think they are wrong for doing that, well before they merged with Pixar, they were dying like for real, the only thing keeping them from crushing was Pixar, and when their contract with Pixar was ending Disney did the only smart thing they could, they bought Pixar, and give them foll control over Disney. also if you are wondering what animation i was talking about, it was the princesses and the frog, and i know what your saying "but that is a great movie" and you are right, Disney thought it would be a huge success, but it wasn't, even thought it was a great movie and Disney worked really hard on, it was not as successful as i should have been, or as Disney was hoping it would, so they had to go 3D.
This...this is so beautuful. It gives way more depth to their love than what we saw in the final product, and it teaches a beautiful lesson about love: it is better to love and suffer than to never love at all. There is no regretting true love.
*Lyric:* If I never knew If I never felt this love I would have no inkling of How precious life can be And if I never held you I would never have a clue How at last I'd find in you The missing part of me In this world so full of fear Full of rage and lies I can see the truth so clear In your eyes, so dry your eyes And I'm so grateful to you: I'd have lived my whole life through Lost forever if I never knew you If I never knew you I'd be safe but half as real Never knowing I could feel A love so strong and true I'm so grateful to you I'd have lived my whole life through Lost forever If I never knew you I thought our love would be so beautiful Somehow we'd make the whole world bright I never knew that fear and hate could be so strong All they'd leave us were these wispers in the night But still my heart is saying we were right Oh if I never knew you (There's no moment I regret) If I never felt this love (Since the moment that we met) I would have no inkling of (If our time has gone too fast) How precious life can be... This movie was my first True Love experience honestly. Seeing John Smith and Pocahontas so in love with their whole hearts, only for it to show that not everything will be a happy ending. I was crying by the end of it seeing both the hope their eyes that they'll see each again someday. And as far as I'm concerned they did and lived happily. No sequel in sight. But I think we all agree on that one.
In my heart, they eventually did find each other again. Not fair they’re the only couple who got a sad ending. Aim it at a ditz like Snow White or Aurora, considering both didn’t even know their dudes’ names, let alone their princes did all the saving. At least Cinderella spent 4 hours with the prince and got a decent sequel (still don’t like how much the prince’s personality was changed) and at least they fought for their love
Sadly a huge reason is because he’s still based on a terrible person who was so awful towards the real Pocahontas and her people. If you’ve read even a little of the real history, you’d see her short lived life was anything BUT a fairytale unfortunately. She was even imprisoned and raped by the English, and was forced to marry John Rolfe for a political marriage because she was a chief’s daughter, for whatever peace the English promised. But yes, John Smith has always been my favorite Disney prince too! My other is Flynn Rider. But yes, it pains me so much John Smith gets sh*tted on so much in comparison to other princes just because he’s unfortunately based on a terrible person. I even read a comment once that said they completely hated John Smith BECAUSE Disney tried portraying him as this amazing man when he was the complete opposite in reality. Like, my boy changed about halfway through the movie and wasn’t afraid to confront his comrades they were wrong about the natives, that they could learn from them and coexist peacefully. He risked his own life several times just to spend time with Pocahontas, even protecting Thomas and he probably expected he’d be killed in her village that night. But ultimately, he jumped in front of a freaking bullet he knew would kill him to protect someone who hated him so much and almost killed him to declare war. And in the end when Pocahontas chose to stay with her people instead, he chose to stay with her despite he knew he’d die! But despite wanting to stay with her over surviving his wound, he honored her wish to return home without her, knowing he might not even survive before making it back in time, which added to how sad her decision was and insisting he go home. Like, I hate it whenever people try complaining “He’s a racist who called her a savage and almost killed her the first time he saw her. He’s also cocky and arrogant” Like these people clearly did NOT see him jumping in front of a damn bullet he expected to kill him to protect her dad and stop the war. Not to mention this song really shows just how much he matured as a character, she feels everyone hates her and everything is entirely her fault. She’s so overwhelmed with guilt and sadness she snaps at him they shouldn’t have met, because she felt he’d blame her too. Despite it really hurt his feelings, he gently reassures her meeting her is the best thing that’s ever happened to him! Like she truly doesn’t understand how much he loves her! He can’t even hold her in his big strong arms and tell her everything will be okay, just be there for her and help her to understand the importance of letting go and his love will burn on forever even after he’s dead. He’s extremely hot and sexy, kind, brave, strong, open minded, free spirited, protective, and ultimately very loving and caring about the woman he loves! Not to mention he was patient with her, not understanding why she was afraid to let him get closer because she was already betrothed to another man. Like he was willing to be just her friend and still protect her people! And ultimately he’s sacrificial, willing to die to protect his loved ones! No joke, Eric and Aladdin have nothing on John Smith. Legit If I Never Knew You is much more impressive than Eric popping a giant octopus, and I personally don’t get why Aladdin is hailed as one of the best Disney princes, given he lies nearly the entire time to Jasmine. I’d rather date someone who was willing to admit they were wrong and learn from their mistakes than someone who kept lying to get me to give them a chance.
A lot of it (at least these days) might just be because Mel Gibson, though a good actor and a decent singer, and very likable in this movie, well… he kind of isn’t the greatest person. So there’s probably some overlap there. I’m able to set aside my “ugh Mel Gibson” and acknowledge that he KILLED it in this movie, especially this scene, and I’m 38 years old and still cry when I watch this 🤷♀️
@@cellytron somewhat. I don’t think too many people were bothered with him as John Smith at the time, but unfortunately he did say some racist things later on about Jews. I know the historical nerds complained “He doesn’t even sound British.” Despite from what I’ve read, his accent is actually more accurate to how Brits actually talked back then. But the main reason why not a lot of people like the character is unfortunately he’s still based on a man who was just as bad as the rest of the English towards Pocahontas’s people. There’s even widespread rumors he completely lied about her saving his life and he fabricated the entire thing for attention. So it makes having a popular entertainment studio romanticize them pretty cringy and downright offensive for some. If you’ve read even a little of the real Pocahontas’s life, you’d see how terrible the English were towards her. So its really sad to see such an amazing Disney character imo get hated on merely because of his name and unfortunately being a real person. While characters like Hercules don’t get crucified for what happened in their stories, like Hera manipulating Hercules to kill Megara and their children.
@@cellytron but yes! Frankly I’ve never really been into “casting” but I found it incredible Mel actually insisted he wanted to sing any songs John had. A lot of Disney movies back then normally had a professional sing for the characters instead of the voice actor themselves. And I found that incredible Gibson actually kinda embraced his character, considering Alan Menken had to rewrite the song to fit his deeper voice. But it really makes this song more wholesome and just makes it that much more irritating and disappointing the song got cut for the dumbest reason, kids getting bored. I really feel if this song stayed a lot a more people would like Pocahontas as a movie more and stop b*tching about historical inaccuracies in a literal cartoon. But ultimately would stop calling John an arrogant racist, but see how much he truly changed and deeply loves and cares about Pocahontas. That he isn’t afraid to die because he got to meet such an incredible woman and her friends, but she helped him become a better person! Anyone who’s stupid enough to say Rolfe is better for Pocahontas clearly never listened to this song or is too immature to understand how deep their love is
I don't know if you watched game of thrones but my realization after watching this movie again as an adult is tbh......this fictionalised depiction of john smith kinda draws some similarities to jaime lannister in /some way./ i can even say he got a better send off than jaime did on got lol
Same! Their love is so beautiful and mature it honestly felt real for a Disney movie. Like Ariel literally fell for Eric purely because he’s a human, that’s basically it. Or even Jasmine ended up marrying someone who lied to her the entire time. But they’re still pretty popular. It really sucks the main reason why Pocahontas and John Smith aren’t more popular is unfortunately they were real people whose friendship definitely wasn’t like the movie. It really sucks especially John himself gets shitted on for being based on a very bad man, instead of how much he did for her people in the movie. Like he jumped in front of a freaking bullet he knew would kill him to save her dad and prevent war, but everyone’s too busy calling him an arrogant jerk. While Meg gets praised for being crushed by a pillar, despite she played Hercules the entire time for her personal gain. But she and Aladdin get free passes because they weren’t real people.
Omg I think I just realized something When Pocahontas left he turned away and only looked at her shadow so he didn’t have to watch her leave FORGIVE ME IF I’M WRONG BUT LIKE MY GOD WHY DIDN’T THEY ADD THIS INTO THE MOVIE
This scene....💔😭...ugh I'm such a hopeless romantic. Afraid to love, but lowkey just want a man to hold me close, tell me I'm beautiful forever even when we reach old age together. I always want to be the apple of his eye. A man who would be heaven sent for me. A man worthy enough I'd dodge a bullet for. It would be sooooo nice to love someone deeplyly and be loved back by them with the same deepness. But love is so PAINFUL 😭😭😭 why does reality do this to us?
And, of course, the guards are just out there listening to these two sing their hearts out, and are like: "Oh yeah, she's /really/ givin' it to him for killing Kocoum. No doubt."
Disney truly doesn’t make them like they used to. Movies like this make you feel like you warped back to the couch/chair you were sitting on with maybe your brother and or sister and leave you reminiscing. They were beautifully made and sadly gems like them won’t be made again ♥️
I thought so too...but I found one- or he found me. Never had I heard such words of love- such a man. They are out there, but you must be the feminine and as loving and romantic as you want a special man to be. and he will come.
This is why our world doesn't meet mine. It's like my buddy Obito Uchiha once said; "this world is completely worthless. There is nothing left in it but misery.”

@@coolcooldude1631 that's how the europeans used to think about it that time, dude. Disney was just setting a atmosphere. The idians also sang 'savages'. They're just trying to let you see the movie from the character's perspective. You are the problem why racism protests aren't taken serious by some people.
Yes. That’s what makes it that so heartbreaking. He literally says “What pain? I’ve had worse pain than this, can’t think of any right now.” Indicating he has NOT experienced the worst pain yet: saying goodbye. The fact she used his own words on him just completely broke his heart, and when their hands are separated he even closed his eyes because he was too sad to watch her disappear, I bet he was actually crying off screen before he felt the colors of the wind hit him. I will admit when he waved anna, I would’ve KILLED to hear a faint “anna” whisper to her, as a reference to when he prevented her from completing the motion “I like hello better”
Namoka leads Pocahontas to where John is held, & tells the guards she wants to look into his eyes. They look at each other, then step aside to let her in. I love the look of pain on her face. I love the way her hair falls behind her as she bends down. I love the way he says her name when he sees her. I love the music as she embraces him. He leans to her & his soft voice “In your eyes, so dry your eyes.” “But still my heart is saying we were right.” He vows, he’ll always be with her.

Arthus850 Really sad, that is why I am not going to watch it. My heart cannot take it (sorry for the overly dramatic reaction XD)
❤

@@whythough9753 Pocahontas 2 - Journey to a new world
It pisses me off they cut this song and "When Love is Gone" from The Muppet Christmas Carol.
They cut this from the movie because the kids who watched the movie before it was released called it “boring.”

I agree, this was supposed to be my wedding song! Because I loved this seen so much ❤. 20 years later and It still makes me flutter

I love how the guard says "be quick" and they end up having a whole musical number during her time seeing him😂
It's Disney. When they do a Musical Number, the characters enter a completely different time zone, where hours can pass for them, but only seconds in the real world. Kinda like Narnia. That, or they don't show the guards outside just bawling their eyes out.

Right ? !
I'd rather die tomorrow, than live a hundred years without knowing you."
If a man could ever tell me this, I think I could die in peace.
i just realized that Damon from the vampire diaries said something like that to elena when she removed her memories of him!

I'm about to say something similar to this to someone important to me, weirdly enough I wanted to say it even before I knew about the existence of this scene. I only knew the song from the soundtrack
I swear I’m not crying.
zilan s DAMN THESE BOWL OF ONIONS!😭😭
this song makes me cry because, in possibly their most inaccurate film, they managed to finally capture for the first time, and i think the last time, true love. even as a child, i could understand in my own way, the intensity behind their feelings but now as an adult it holds so much more meaning for me.
Me too.

And its really sad how it’s slowly decayed overtime, but a movie like Hercules has been growing in popularity and people claim “We all know the actual mythology is grievously inaccurate to the Disney movie” but Pocahontas gets all the heat and hate because “She was still a real person, like it or not”
She was always my favorite princess, and I always thought she was a lot more beautiful than Ariel, Belle or Jasmine tbh, especially her gorgeous hair.

When Pocahontas says "I can't leave you" while touching him and the look in her eyes AHHHHHHHHH!!! I lost it!!
they had me whipped when i was 6 and it still makes me feel a LOT even when i'm older. i can't forget my first ship ever lol
SAMEEEEE OMG
We gonna ignore they almost kissed one last time before stupid Nakoma interrupted? He literally kissed her hand before she left, that had to sting like crazy they didn’t even get a farewell kiss
Fun fact: Gibson actually provided the singing voice for his character. I find that very admirable, when people who are not trained singers fully embrace the role.
It killed me to learn he was the voice of John Smith lol like nooo my childhood crush ruined
It's rare now.
His is a pleasant singing voice. Did it for me and the character.
Actually most Disney VAs actually sing I believe for their characters. Pocahontas unfortunately was sung different. But I don’t care if he didn’t sound British enough, Mel Gibson had a beautiful deep voice.
@@kristinahuchison2511 Nowadays most Disney VAs also sing their characters, but that was definitely not the norm in the 90s.
If they ever make a live-action film of Pocahontas, they should put that song along with this scene.
I'm native and I want to audition for Kokoum

@@constantineaztro9173 I wish you good luck
If Shang and Mishu got left out of the Mulan live action then John Smith definitely wouldn't be the love interest to be honest.
The song Savages in today's climate would be like stepping on a landmine XD
The contrast between the scene in the song 'Just Around The Riverbend' when Kocouam stretches out his hand to hers and Pocahuntas refuses and in this song 'If I Never Knew You' when John Smith stretches out his hand to his and she accepts it... I was weeping
Actually I always melt when he gives her hand a gentle kiss, then sadly vanishes, showing how gentle and kind he was in comparison to Kokoum who had his hand out as if expecting her to automatically take it, in other words didn’t really care or consider how she felt. The fact its both his hands holding hers gives me that he wants to hold/touch her as much as possible and her hand is like a flower, so beautiful and delicate
not sure if anyone else caught this, but when john smith first encountered pocahontas, the instrumental of this song was playing in the background.

Just the chopped onions is all!
YEAH, I'M CRYING.
OMG HOW DID YOU KNOW
God damn it how did you know!?
Okay, where are your cameras? Who said you could spy on me?
It's so sad that they took this song out, because where else can you find such a heartbreaking love story as this one?
this scene really is beautiful!
+Mariah Lujan That makes sense
For me Pocahontas is the most meaningfull disney movie, its like love has no race, color, or religion, love is just love ♡

@@alexie832 that's always i told them. But they're so blind or else.
it's a f*cking disney movie. it's not supposed to be from 100% real story
Can you blame them?
@@kristinahuchison2511 If Part of Your World was cut, I don't think Disney would have been able to get to Pocahontas, nevermind Treasure Planet
Agreed.
Yes you're right, I agree with you too :((
It was removed because although older audiences liked it, they thought it was too mature for the child audiences. It was a good song for the plot and really made their separation and the sequel all the more heartbreaking for them.

Eh, I disagree. This song would hit so much harder if they never met again
+Silverwood Meadows they meet again in heaven
Honestly the way he holds her hand is like it was a delicate flower, giving it a gentle loving kiss before sadly vanishing as if to say “I’m sorry for breaking your heart, I will always love you”
This is something no one has noticed yet: before this scene (not in the video) she tells Nakoma “All of this happened because of me.
DUDE I’ve watched this movie 400 times and I never noticed that!
I’m just noticing that. Beautiful isn’t it?❤️

God I love the detail in this animation. That little expression he makes RIGHT before he says, "Can't think of any right now" is priceless!
lol supercute expression.
Love how the orchestra brings emotion to the song. Perfect combination of emotion and voice
:D
Like Disney deliberately dialed up the romance and tricked us into thinking they could be together after her dad spared his life, just to shatter their happily ever after with Ratcliffe unwilling to back down and he made the heartbreaking decision to sacrifice his life to save her dad’s instead
Also I wouldn’t say “first love didn’t work out” because then you make it sound like you don’t mind she chose Rolfe instead. They clearly wanted to be together more than anything in the end, but she loved him too much to let him die when he might live if he went back home. when john smith sings "empty as the sky" i cry. every time. even when i can't see how much pain he's in. just his voice.
"I rather die tomorrow than live a 100 years without knowing you"
Damn that shit is deep. Such an awesome scene :)
Why is this song so underrated? Also anyone else feel Pocahontas and John don’t get enough love?
So comforting that I'm not the only one who thinks this way😌
I truly think Pocahontas is very underrated among Disney movies.
But juts lets enjoy this faboulos movie and the great massage he tells us :)
Btw sry for this try of english :)
Schockocrispie
Anastasia isn't a Disney movie, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame isn't based on a true story, it's based on a book. :)
But yes, I agree.
@@joosoo Are you always this much fun?

This made me hate the second movie even more, because this song showed how romantic these two were, the other two in the sequel which won't be named showed no signs of a love building up in the movie. These two John Smith and Pocahontas will always be my winning couple no matter what really happened

Yeah unfortunately I do know it's supposed to be real life accurate. Ugh
IKR!!!!! And she didn't even choose the cute one! 😂
@@graceface9455 ikr! Even Quasimodo is cuter than Rolfe. She picked a dud over a stud 😂
honestly, i dont know how she ended up loving the other john.
Sequel rewrite:
John Smith is taken to London where he's given medical treatment, all the while, he can only think of Pocahontas and his love for her.
@@kristinahuchison2511 Disney, you made my childhood golden with so many beautiful films, now that you could do such a terrible thing, I am absolutely disappointed in you.😔😢
@@hangaborbely8897 eh, Disney can burn in hell with how awful most of their projects have been lately.
They so should have kept this in ! It gives their relationship another level. Makes me wanna cry !
I mean they worked so hard on the first movie, to let outsiders to get to you means you've lost your original purpose and it's not your work anymore, it's someone else's.
to those people it's like watching Hercules for appropriate Greek mythology... for one Hercules is Roman.. as well as Cupid.. the Greek names are Heracles, and Eros. As well as Hera wasn't actually his mom, in either Myth, but she hated and constantly tried to kill him (not Hades) throughout his lifespan :P because it was a greek tragedy D;
But of course Disney won't put that in there lol
cry about it. disney is better than you
Just because we're nobodies doesn't make Disney better than us. Just so you know.
This is so gorgeous, why doesn't Disney make animated movies like this instead of that weird 3D thing?
Because God hates us
Because the new CEO laid off all the animators that did THEE best work in these movies and in the industry to merge Pixar with Disney and bring about 3D movies you see now. They're more into the new modern generation rather than the classic fairy tale genre and would prefer to bring about Miyazaki films too--anime and 3D movies generate more profit since that's the current trend.
Laziness.
because the last animation movie they mad, did so badly compered to what they thought, that they released that that kind of art is not working anymore, cause when most adult see a traditional drawn movie they thing "for kids" but when they see a 3D movie they think "an adult can watch this" regardless of the type of movie. so Disney releasing where the money at went in that direction, and if you think they are wrong for doing that, well before they merged with Pixar, they were dying like for real, the only thing keeping them from crushing was Pixar, and when their contract with Pixar was ending Disney did the only smart thing they could, they bought Pixar, and give them foll control over Disney. also if you are wondering what animation i was talking about, it was the princesses and the frog, and i know what your saying "but that is a great movie" and you are right, Disney thought it would be a huge success, but it wasn't, even thought it was a great movie and Disney worked really hard on, it was not as successful as i should have been, or as Disney was hoping it would, so they had to go 3D.
Even so 3D is now a trend, it would be nicer if Disney still make movies applying this style of animation. It's just sincere and classic!
This...this is so beautuful. It gives way more depth to their love than what we saw in the final product, and it teaches a beautiful lesson about love: it is better to love and suffer than to never love at all. There is no regretting true love.

@@kristinahuchison2511 Mulan had great animation like Pocahontas. From Joe. X
@@joeandrews7329 so did Hunchback of Notre Dame. I really liked Mulan’s animation because it felt it was inspired from traditional Chinese art.
I don’t understand why people hate John. He’s a good man, brave, open minded, willing to change and gorgeous. What more could people ask for?

Does anyone notice that Pocahontas says the same words when they bid farewell in the ending scene? This mature love completely touches my heart.
