    I've always found it commendable that SNK keeps making fighting games for oldheads, for lack of a better term. Samsho, KOF, and I'm hoping CotW all have a lot of that classic game design influence that make them feel fresh in a currently exploding market of these games.
    I was unreasonably pleased when I heard that everyone's "secret super moves" have unique inputs. Just one of those things, I guess.

    I love that they leaned even harder into the "2D animation" style instead of trying and failing to compete in "photorrealism". It's obviously no ArcSys imo, but it's unique, it looks really good and SNK gameplay rarely disappoints, so it's mad promising.
    Edit: omfg it's A+B throw? That's fucking sick. I hope they lean into command normals instead of proximity normals as well, but that's probably wishful thinking on my part. Still, that's really good.

      Edit: Also, isnt kof like, the command normal fighting game? It has proximity normals but command normals are a big part of it, i always found that it made it easy to do combos as a newbie

      @@doodoo2065 KOF has both, but definitely fewer command normals than BlazBlue or UNI. There's nothing wrong with proximity normals, btw, it's just a personal preference because the invisible activation range bugs me a lot, specially in characters with fast runs.
      Few things have felt worse than running in with Millia, getting really close, and instead of getting a 50/50 from cS, you get fS, and now you're very negative in front of the opponent with a low health character because the fS cancel options are horrible from up close.

      The problem is that KOF is too filled with mechanics so it's hard to think of a way to switch from the old school throw (SF2) to a combination button throw, that started later. There are already vital mechanics set to ab and cd and abc, and there are ex moves.
      Since a long time I think that SNK should sit down and brainstorm a solution to redefine those mechanics inputs, not removing anything, and leave a room to a double button throw. To me it's an important little step for the game, that's already close to 30 years old. Maybe even at the cost of inventing brand new buttons for the game, to create more possibilities of button combinations. It just doesn't need to be actual new attack buttons. I don't want SNK games to be 6 button games in the same sense of SF, but it might be important to create a new "gimmick" button that leads to different mechanics according to different combinations, in order to leave a room for an "ab" throw.

      Its more like their 3D modelers/artists took time and experience to get that consistent look and effects that translate from MOTW. All their experience from KOF 14/XV and Samsho in terms of graphical fidelity has finally come together. Also seems to capture Tonko/Aki Senno's modern style with well defined hard shadows.

    Glad SNK is pursuing their own graphical style instead of trend chasing.
    I don't want every fighting game looking the same.

      Also this is a gaming genre that established these ways of working with art styles since the beginning. SF2, then SF3, and Marvel, and Jojo, and 2d MK, and KI, and AOF, KOF and Samsho (mainly since 3) most notably pursuing unique looks. Also in early 3d age, SF EX and Rival Schools wanted to look clearly more cartoony than VF, TK and SE/SC. And as 3d progressed VF and TK showed an inclination to a more realistic feel while SC and DOA showed an inclination to more "3d anime" feel. These artistic nuances in their execution of 3d started to show.
      And now there are options to go from Arc Systems art style to the MK art style at the other extreme, with a fairly decent number of art style variations (i mean for an industry that's way more limited in different fgs than in the 90s).
      To me it's important that this art style diversity is respected and pursued by the companies, and that part of the public is sensible about that matter (maybe the older fg fans but whatever). Not all gaming genres can be entirely like this one, where every major dev is able to respect that matter.

    The fact it's already a bold statement to bringing back feints and break moves, they'd even crank it up that mechanics to make it more interresting. Man, gameplay-wise (and SOUND-wise) I never doubt them. Can't wait for 2025!

    the characters absolutely "pop" out more
    looking back to kof15/14, it felt like the characters blended in with the background a bit too much
    so this is a very welcome change!

    The idea that its made for fighting gamers has been my outlook on snk in the modern age. It sucks they dropped the ball on matchmaking in kof15, but that game reminded me that I suck at real fighting games and been having my hand held by devs in recent history. I love it. Actually having to put time in to get better and seeing improvement is a sublime experience. Also glad it looks like they may have truly delivered in the art department for the first time since the jump to 3D imo

    I have to give my congratulations to SNK, I thought they would go the "strive" route and erase all the mechanics that defined the franchise, especially considering that this is the first FF in 25 years, I think very few people would have complained if that had been the case. but instead they not only brought mechanics from 25 years ago, but also expanded and polished them, add to that a new control system so that new players can integrate into the game faster, I think this is a W for everyone.

    This game definitely feels like the natural progression for a modern Fatal Fury game. A lot of mechanics making a return from both Mark of the Wolves and Real Bout 2 makes this feel like a true successor to the series instead of just being a MotW reboot. I hope that also extends into the character roster as well with a lot of returning characters from both games. It's also worth noting that MotW was the first game Oda had a large role in. He's credited as a planner in the game. Maybe he feels more involved because it's a followup to one of the first games he ever got real credit for.

      Oda started in the mid 90s but in smaller roles, and Garou was his first major role. He's a key figure about many aspects of that game.
      The sequel was cancelled because SNK was dieing. And he went to Dimps and didn't return to SNK right when it returned in 03, and he ended up being the gameplay designer of SF4. And after that work was done he went to SNK work on KOF 14 and so on.
      Since a long time he expressed the desire of returning to the FF franchise to work on the "MOTW" timeline. But FF is a dead and buried franchise, that totally lost to KOF in popularity since the late 90s... so I guess that means something hard to convince the SNK higher ups. That is a company with limited resources after all, and even KOF, their strongest game, is struggling to reach the minimal quality standards to avoid falling too much behind the competition. But finally FF was greenlit... and that means Oda must be taking the project very seriously.

      Its like an evolution of MvC3's artstyle
      The black shadows are way more defined, and characters have a nice ambient light on their backs that makes them stand out against the background

    You wondered on twitch vod what tizoc was doing during the bullet time, it is his down AB invincible on upper body, all garou motw character have this.
    I guess they gave it a bullet time if you avoid an attack to allow you to confirm into super easily ( on motw super didn't come out if down AB hit on guard so you could option select it with the super all the time with no risk, i guess now it's not possible anymore but you have bullet time for easy confirm instead)

    Been wanting to buy one of their games, man. This one looks the most interesting to get in on, And my boy Rock isn't just an anachronistic throw-in (though I appreciated every time they got him in the line-up by hook or by crook, lol). Smart company.

    I'm glad that all they showed has had a very positive reception. Snk really made the right on the graphics, if you don't have the budget to make the most high quality character models or hyper realistic textures go strong on the art style. Also I love that they are bringing back unorthodox super inputs, even if it's only for the hidden supers

    Out of all the modern SNK titles KOF15 felt rushed a bit. I knew that covid and the aquisition would slow developement for KOF15. The other SNK titles had more effort, more content, and more time behind them despite the smaller budget. SNK is putting most of their effort on COTW which is why I don't expect a season 3 for KOF15. It definetely shows for both titles.

    When it comes to recurring series' I mainly look forward to old characters coming back first, then maybe a few new characters. But with this game I look forward to new characters, the concept art for the canceled sequel got me intrigued. I mainly played Rock in garou but you know how that turned out lol, so I'm hoping to find a new main with this entry.

    people need to know that a limitation graphics-wise doesn't necessarily mean it looks bad. i hope they crank up the stylization more because i think they did wonderfully with the samsho having the inky-okami-calligraphy art style.

      SNK just can't afford to match the type of visual standards constantly pursued by SF, MK and TK. So the only hope is to look elsewhere and focus on that other direction on purpose, and do a good job on that.
      It's not true that only that style gets attention... And the proof is actually been known since GG Xrd, and most notably the PS4 form of that style, present in successful releases like DBFZ and GGST. So that is the proof that alternative art styles have a space... It just needs to be an extremely good job.
      SNK's problem is more precisely not having realized that situation and fully invested in that "stylish 3d" direction since the development of KOF 14. They could have tried something to spice up the graphics... I dont know exactly what would work best for KOF, but anything would have been a big help to KOF 14, that was awful to look at in the PS4 gen.
      Hopefully the general public reaction to this Garou art style convinces SNK to invest even more seriously in the stylish 3d direction for KOF 16. Because by the late 2020s (estimated release) I believe the public will not be able to forgive a bland looking game anymore, taking already into account future games (maybe a new VF, maybe a new SC, surely a new NRS game, etc).

    Tekken 8 looks very good but, I have always thought that Street Fighter 6 looked weird. It looks realistic and it has an art style. But it doesn't mesh well. COTW looks very good and it's art style meshes very well. I wish capcom would make some kind of cell shaded fighter.

    Stylization Is more important than graphical fidelity. People still talk about how JSR, Okami, Paper Mario looked. Those games have ass graphical fidelity by today's standards.

    Used to play Garou a bunch on the Dreamcast. Burned GD ROM disc. Glad to see JD and air JD is back. Air defensive mechanics are fun. Makes AA more interesting

    Game looks amazing in comparison to kof15 (yeah, not a high bar). Definitely more pleasing than sf6's pseudo-realistic style.

    For KOF or for classic FF, that is Terry's arc, this music doesnt work... but for Garou MOTW, where the star is Rock Howard, it really works well. I wasn't impressed (yet) but i can understand and appreciate these decisions and musical directions.

    I find it funny how modern SNK titles have so many things done poorly, but at the same time the gameplay works so well that you feel the same weird feeling you felt all those years ago playing fighting games for the first time. Its like a familiar smell from you childhood and it just feels right.

    Really cool seeing you be cautiously optimistic but also wanting to go "ALL IN!", like you said adding stuff for newcomers to muck around with like training, minigames etc would be a step in the right direction.
    If I had any criticism it's the same I had with early SF6 footage, some of the effects make you lose sight of your character/too big, but they toned it down at the end so the same might happen here. For returnees I know for sure Marco Rodrigues gotta get his invite, also is this like Rock Howard's "Final Form", man's got a power geyser AND air fireballs?!

    People now retroactively saying that KOFXV "looks bad", or "outdated", or "generations behind", when these same people said the game looked great and was a huge jump over XIV upon release is just your usual internet reactionary bullshit.

      KOFXV was a huge jump over KOFXIV, yet still not visually keeping up with anything ArcSys or even Bamco was putting out at the time because XIV was *just that far behind.* Two things can be true at the same time. People are only coming forth with this kind of sentiment because CotW looks like it’ll be the first SNK fighter since KOFXIII to be on par with if not leading the industry at the time of release-IF, of course, they maintain this current art direction while continuing to polish the finer details.
      It comes from a place of excitement for SNK’s past and future after a rough patch between XIII’s astronomical development cost, XIV’s graphics, Samsho’s unfortunate pandemic + bad netcode combo, and KOFXV’s matchmaking and input issues at launch. Hopefully you can share in the widespread enthusiasm for SNK’s industry-defining potential to finally *NOT* be wasted on some dealbreaker or unfortunate circumstance like their past half dozen or so titles.

      @@Sakaki98 I don't like it that people are ragging on KOFXV to build up City of the Wolves, when there is nothing wrong with the way XV looks; the character models especially are great and still holds up (Max for one said Mai looked the best she ever had, and constantly glowed about how great the game looked when the trailers were dropping on a weekly basis, but now he's one of those saying how outdated the visuals are - which is typical internet reactionary bullshit).
      The reason KOFXIII was an industry leader was because SNK employed all of their expertise in traditional sprite work to deliver perhaps the most beautiful sprite-based fighting game there has ever been; it had nothing to do with being on the cutting edge of technology. That's not SNK's history anyways. ArcSys and Capcom etc. are much more about displaying the very latest tech, while SNK has always been more about style and charisma, because they have arguably the greatest roster of characters in all of fighting games (something that City of the Wolves is foregrounding in a big way).
      I'm very glad that people are excited about how City of the Wolves is looking and shaping up, but I don't like that they're doing revisionist history and making as if KOFXV is a PS3 era game or some shit, when almost all of them were applauding the game's visuals as a major updgrade - almost a generational leap - over XIV when it came out.

    I have no problem with the English dub it was just very surprising that they got it at all, also I like how the game looks and everything except for Terry's Buster Wolf it just looks bad and small

    For some reason I never understood what was hype about Garou (or 3S for that matter) but with more insight on these new mechanics it at least seems unique enough. Hopefully they do something like that for KOF.

I like that they're doing new stuff to distance COW from KOF, both mechanically and stylistically (I'm one of three people who would like lanes back though) and I hope that by the next KOF we do get something that makes it different from the previous ones instead of being stuck in the '98/'02/XIII loop forever. Hell it'd be a good idea to bring back tags like in XI.

    I really think the style that they're going for works really well, but I think the special effects on the supers need some work. Right now, a lot of the supers look a bit dull to me. Looking forward to giving the game a try though.

      I think that must be partly because they are still the same old moves from the 90s, invented with 2d animation in mind and the NeoGeo standards in mind as well. I think devs needed to spice things up a bit in the way they feel and not emulate them 100%. But SNK just has traditionalist tendencies, there's nothing to do about that. And that attitude clearly has good sides and bad sides.

    Garou was the first SNK game I really loved, and I think it's because it feels way more like a Street Fighter game than any other SNK fighter. It's like they saw SF III, and said "We can do better than that, and on hardware from 1990!"
    I just hope they get both the netcode AND MATCHMAKING correct, or it'll be dead on arrival like so many other games.

    I want to see what they do with Billy Kane. He's in the promo art, so he is almost definitely going to he in the roster.
    My man hasn't really been relevant since KOF 2k2 and Real Bout 2. He was alright in KOF 13 but needed more than what he got. It's like SNK is afraid to make him good.
    But I want to see what they do with him in this updated MotW framework. They can't just give him a couple of options here. They need to give him that Real Bout sauce he had where he could mix the opponent and play at all ranges.

      @carlosaugusto9821 - In a regular FG, sure. But this is Garou, not KOF. This is SNK's answer to Street Fighter. We had multiple rows to go back and forth on to play neutral. And when that got taken away, we scooped up Parry from SF3 and made it better. Billy Kane, Lawrence Blood, and Sokaku all had weapons and were never busted.
      All I'm saying is if they make Billy with a KOF mindset, we'll have a Remy in the roster. A character with no options in a system that is actively against his playstyle. I want this guy to be a threat again.

      Depends on who you are talking about. [SNK lore nerd lecture incoming...]
      The Takuma version of Mr Karate, the original char, and the one who got in SVC Chaos and KOF 13, he can't appear because he is too old. KOF has its own universe and is free to do whatever it wants with chars from other universes like AOF and FF.
      But the reality is that outside the fanservice SNK universe of KOF, in the AOF-FF universe, AOF is a prequel to FF by a difference of a decade. That means in the classic FF timeline, before Garou MOTW, everyone you know from AOF is already 10 years older... And naturally even older in the MOTW timeline. And in the classic FF timeline Ryo already became the new Mr Karate... It's no longer Takuma.

    It looks like they took KOF15 and gave it a lot more drip, which is fine. The game looks really nice. They put a lot of detail into the special effects, lighting, and backgrounds as if they were using 2D graphics. But about those backgrounds though, they already look better then any other fighter out right now. The people in the backgrounds don't look like ps2 characters (cough tekken8 sf6 sorry).

    SNK just can't afford to match the type of visual standards constantly pursued by SF, MK and TK. So the only hope is to look elsewhere and focus on that other direction on purpose, and do a good job on that.
    The way i see it, SNK's problem is more precisely not having realized that situation much earlier and fully invested in that "stylish 3d" direction since the development of KOF 14. They could have tried something to spice up the graphics... I dont know exactly what would work best for KOF, but anything would have been a big help to KOF 14, that was awful to look at in the PS4 gen. That outcome could have prevent (at least a little) the damage to SNK's reputation in the modern era as a maker of famous games that however look indie level.
    Hopefully the general public reaction to this Garou art style convinces SNK to invest even more seriously in the stylish 3d direction for KOF 16. Because by the late 2020s (estimated release of KOF 16) I believe the public will not be able to forgive a bland looking game anymore, taking already into account future games (maybe a new VF, maybe a new SC, surely a new NRS game, etc).

    Their best effort by far,still a lil iffy on some effects which is where they struggle the most. Busta wolf looking a lil lacking. They need to learn to slow fade-away effects after it appears and not just flash it away
    Also ex into ex move (kof15) is kinda limiting. Yeah you can cancel specials into special but we know specific specials should be cancelles into specific special for the combos to work. So that makes the combos very and repetitive,its why i kinda left kof15. All the matches looked the same,especially when its mirror matches.

    8:59 I haven't been playing every new fighting game that's been coming out on the market but who is doing this besides asw? Street fighter players seem to love 6, mortal kombat was never designed with people who love fighting games and honestly I don't know shit about tekken 8. UNI 2 has been scratching that new fighting game itch for me but yet again it's not really that new. Curious to know if I missed something
