    I remember I was playing Street Fighter V in a small tournament at a gaming convention when some old dude came up and started trashing the game. He literally said that this wasn’t SF and that it was a Marvel game because you could land a combo before a character hit the ground. After the tournament I saw this dude on a Super Turbo cab playing by himself. I never want to be that dude.

    People may make fun of me for this but I keep a journal just to practice my articulation and to make sure I have my ideas sorted in my head before it leaves my mouth. Honestly it's something I always felt I needed to improve upon so I could help improve the discussion rather than completely ruin any possible discourse with a poorly made point. • @AkibanaZero
      @AkibanaZero 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Confession: I was a big SFV hater and I can tell you it didn't matter why, I just did. I could easily articulate why I didn't like it. It was because I couldn't play my SFIV main the same way in SFV. Articulating it wasn't going to change anything because the game still didn't resonate with me. Took me a while to realize that my negativity was bringing both me and the people who liked the game down and that wasn't fair so I stopped. The lesson learned was that my reasons for disliking a game were personal and didn't really fit into any type of productive discourse surrounding SFV. Me preferring a playstyle in a previous title is a moot point because that previous title still exists. So I guess the problem is that people just need to buck up and accept that not all FGs are going to be for them and that's okay.

    The lack of clarity is a problem ive found that the fgc WAY more than it thinks it does. Its not just old players, lk released his “which guilty gear character is for you video” and i noticed the only reason i understood the video is my experience in the fgc and the gg series. True newcomers have 0% idea what fgc ppl are saying for a long time, until they commit to fighting games for a while.
    Another major thing to keep in mind is most people who listen to you obama, dont write comments. The loud minority of people just react in the most exciting ways their brains can come up with and misunderstand. They think they need to put alternate opinions in a box they already know, instead of just making their box bigger/having more boxes.
    Ive always listened to you, its just the vision arcsys has in turning a gg into a franchise isnt fun for you, we can try to analyze further but we dont have to. I think one way to put it is that fighting games at their base are the sport of fighting, and then they become the instrument of playing the character, with their crazy amount of options.
    Strive definitely emphasizes the base sport aspect and cuts out the music as much as possible. My ability to click with fighting games relies on this. Strive is betting its the same way with more people.
    I know you’ve read my comments the past year, this is an opportunity to get people into understanding fighting games. More player base, more tournament spectators, more everything. Work both sides of the problem, you are spreading awareness for the need for clarity, while strive teaches basic concepts and gives people a fun way to gain experience and understanding.
    Makes sense gamers are soft, lets not kid ourselves, our favorite hobby is beating people up/ killing them for fake.
    And in no way am I implying that its obama’s responsibility to participate in the opportunity strive presents and makes content in strive that explains basics. Sounds to me like obama is tired of being a teacher.

    Big part of it is just the nature of online interactions. Everyone wants their 5 seconds of validation. From the old ST player saying SF4 is "nothing but mashing." To the SFV player that answers any criticism about their chosen game with, "Lol ok boomer". No one takes the time to think and to clearly express an idea.

  • @ColtEagle77

    "Hearing vs listening". That's an important difference. Also, yeah, if you can't articulate yourself well enough, people may just never understand what you mean and just write you off as not knowing what you're saying.

  • @KisutoJP
    @KisutoJP 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    This is an issue with any feedback when it comes to video games - when we test stuff out, we have to train ourselves to really understand what they are TRYING to say. "This section feels long / repetitive." - could literally mean the music is looping too quickly. Or whatever. It's hard AF to balance a game.
    Articulation definitely isn't something that everyone is going to take the time to learn how to do -especially when emotions are involved.

    Like a game? Shill
    Dislike a game? Just a hater
    One of the reasons why I don't get into these types of discussions. I'll play Strive when it comes out but if people don't like it then they don't. Some people just take different opinions as an attack on their own.

    Obama: Don't lump me in with xyz group.
    Also Obama: 5 seconds later lumps everybody else together by saying "right off the bat everybody's like...".
    I'm older than most ppl here and while I completely agree with everything Obama's saying here about the misconception, let's be real. EVERYBODY judges and lumps other people together every single day. Ain't nobody likes it, but ain't nobody immune to it nor does anybody pass up the chance to do it themselves. We just now live in a time where there's more repercussions if it goes too far, but nothing's really changed with the act of judgement.
    People gonna be people. Some maybe do it more silently in today's world, but not a single one of us is above it. If any of us were, then the term godlike might actually mean something outside of a video game.

  • @KTSamurai1
    @KTSamurai1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    honestly, i think this is a gamer problem, not just an older player problem. what's the first thing people, young and old, say when they encounter something they dont understand yet but seems strong? "THAT'S OP!". what do they say when it doesn't work the way they think? "THIS IS TRASH". what happens when a character gets a single balance change? "THIS CHARACTER IS S TIER/TRASH NOW!"
    gamers are not good at nuance, everything is either OP or trash

    “Reversal Window” “buffer” “block string” … as a so called “old head” , started playing when I was 12 with SF2 CE when it came out on arcade, so literally 30 years ago. These are words we never used, at least not any arcade I played in as a kid.
    I am speaking for myself, as I didn’t get into fighting games much after Super Turbo. when I picked up SF4 and SF5 I thought that those games played much “slower”. And what you said about precision is spot on.
    I didn’t understand or could really explain in the terms you used as I never heard or used those terms before. “Slower” was the only way I could describe it.
    My son got into fighting games and I started playing more with him and I had an epiphany when I noticed the combos in 5.
    Like I can literally do the combo and be done with the input way before it even displayed on the screen and it would still come out.
    The lack of precision blew my mind and at that moment I realized why I didn’t gravitate to SF4 and SF5. Everything I learned as a kid for years changed.
    Terms like “frame data “ “plus 2 on block” and all this other stuff you mentioned came about.
    The games became more math and data and less reaction per se, if that makes sense.
    If the “old heads” and “new heads” could just get their egos out of the way, so much can be learned from both sides.

    I feel like this is a common place with alot of larger communities. 4:20 is very true. I think if theres alot of people unhappy with something, then there is a reason for it, and often a bunch of people who suck at explaining themselves well, or even just parrot other people who are bad at explaining themselves means legitimate complaints get drowned out. As someone who wishes Fire Emblem in Smash got an Axer or a Lancer (not a weapon master like Byleth) at some point instead of just the protagonist every time, its really annoying seeing people defend the roster with stuff like "Well Sakurai decides characters based on whats most fun" or "its Sakurai's game so we cant criticize him"

    the thing with negativity is that it prompts a reaction. Arguments are discussion. If you're positive about a game there really isn't anything to launch off of that unless someone disagrees. If people aren't actually playing the game then the content churn naturally turns towards people arguing about bullshit, and it doesn't necessarily have to be articulate or even genuine in a lot of cases

    i agree with what you mean by people not articulating themselves. However, you could put out a 2 page doc of aspects of a game and why you dont like them and fuckers will still simplify you to 'stop being negative, youre just mad because not the exact same' nonsense, every time without fail

      Well, usually it *is* because things are not the same, because the previous iteration was what grew as someone's preferred game or interpretation of a series.
      All Obama is saying, from what I can tell, is that people need to make their arguments better (hard to do on twitter given limited characters) and need to not immediately write others off if that other person's opinion is negative and does not align with their own.

      @@Grangolus no, you’re just simplifying shit again. Not everyone just dislikes shit being different from old games, an example being that a lot of people like Strive’s RC system a lot more than XRD’s.
      People get a lot more upset at removing depth like replacing dead angles which would get balanced around each characters kit with the RC on block that Strive has that just gives the whole cast one same move

I would often ask about matchup knowledge or for help to getting better and I felt like I never got a straight answer from older players. New games in a series are rarely made for old players. That's fine. Unless your game is either ancient or trash there will still be people playing it. I doubt I am even gonna touch strive (at least until they add my characters) because it is different than the game I like. Old guys need to understand that these games are not made for them, and young guys need to understand that too.

Must be annoying to hear this all the time especially since you’ve been talking about these problems since the game was first shown.

Or can’t articulate themselves as you said. We need more listening and digesting each other’s thoughts and opinions as a community.

  • @slifer875

    problem no.1 is the biggest social media page that exist right now its twitter that is just a gigantic shitshow when it comes to format and one of the most toxic places in the internet, it is no longer about looking up fighting game forums for advice but swallowing other people opinions without doing any research on your own and playing the "broken telephone game" on twitter.
    problem no2 lets be honest the FGC its mostly known for being toxic and elitist, just a bunch of nerds pretending to be tough guys, most of the old guys in the west fgc lack social skills or articulation when it comes to critic what they enjoy.
    problem no3 new games get worse and worse on how to teach new players on how to play their games, making fighting games hard to get into or where to start, the fgc make this worse by confusing new fans with elitism, the zoomers attitude of" BIG LOL whatever boomer xdxdxdxd" does not help them either, two groups playing deaf cant listen each other.
    problem no4 in japan the old and most famous players give back to the comunity with guides, events and tournaments, while in the west they mostly think about themselves only thinking about money, internet fame or get in a petty fight on twitter.
    one exception its maximilian making great online tournaments during the pandemic for games that were abandone by their companies: marvel 3 and killer instinc, bringing the comunity together in a time of need.
    If the old players want to be heard then they must clean up their act for the comunity their part of, stop acting like "tought guys" and start acting like teachers for the new blood .
