Just picked up an '06 3 days ago & already fell in love with it. We heard about the rod bearing issues so we decided to just remove the rod bearings altogether, no problems so far.

Nice find! I got my 06 at 90k miles and immediately pulled it in the garage and did rod bearings, vanos line and rebuilt the throttle actuators. I did catless and a stage 2 tune and I am now at 145k miles and it has been trouble free. I have 4 BMW's but the E60 M5 is my daily beast because there is nothing else like it! What a fun car.

I agree with @anpredictable I switched to red line 5w-50 as Troy Jeup advises. It is the thickest 5w-50 around. The V10 loves it. Warms up much faster than 10w-60 and has some of the best wear results in TH-cam tests. The M5 manual actually states you can use 5w-50 too.

For your leaks, replace the seal for the trans fluid resevoir. Notorious for making a mess under the hood. Oil that collects on the passenger side may very well be either a oil filter housing line, or oil cooler (crack in unit or O ring) which are notorious buggers for leaking issues.

  • @brandonfoley7011
    @brandonfoley7011 หลายเดือนก่อน

Did you ever find the oil leak? When I bought mine, it was using an alarming amount of oil, oil cooler was caked and so was radiator among other things. There was a pinhole in one of the fins of the oil cooler and it was spraying the mist everywhere. Hoped it was just the o-ring to the oil line, replaced it, but was still leaking so spent the $400 on a new oil cooler.

Love the 335is, the n54 with the dct transmission is a great combo. I'm currently daily driving a 2010 335i coupe with the steptronic 6 spd auto. My plan is to either get an 11-13 135i or a 14 and up 435i since I love those dct transmissions so much lol. Or if I get lucky and find a good deal on a 335is that would be perfect since I prefer the n54 over the n55 that both the 135i and 435i have. An 8-10 n54 135i or 7-10 335i with a 6 spd manual would also be ideal for me. Lots of bang for the buck in all of these "35" BMW's as a whole! And I was worried about my 105k miles. Over 200k is impressive. Hopefully it has recently had major services. Aside from the bearings, look into the vanos oil pump, solenoids, and injectors as these can cause engine failure. Bosch no longer sells the injectors, unfortunately, so you have to get them from the stealership, or go with m3 injectors, which have the same flow rate. As far as oil change, if you only have the single drain plug like my 06 does, there is actually a BMW TIS procedure you must perform in order to get the oil from the front oil pan area to the main rear oil sump. You just run the engine for 1 minute on a level surface right before you drain the oil. You should be closer to 9L on the fill if done correctly.

Do not rely on oil samples for copper readings regarding the rod shells , I’ve owned a late 2007 LCI for almost six years now , in those six years I had three oil analysis kits , the last one that came back wasn’t to bad regarding the readings but I thought at the time I might as well have the bearings changed for peace of mind , I’m so glad I did because the M mechanic sent me a photo explaining severe wear on the shells in cylinder ten , which he said would of probably of only lasted another two thousand miles or there a-bouts , he fitted the APL shells which have a bit more tolerance which gives longer life then the standard bmw ones , the mileage was 90,000 miles on the original bearings which wasn’t to bad considering previous accounts from unfortunate owners , the car has been fantastic for the six years of ownership , my advice to anyone who’s thinking of purchasing one is , make sure the service history is faultless ie: BMW or specialist bmw full service history , if there is no evidence of rod bearings being changed then have them done because if they fail it’s around £10,000 for a new engine fitted here in the UK compared to £1850 that I paid for the work to be done , do not rev the engine above 3k rpm when it’s cold , when driving the car in M mode make sure you have cooling off periods for ten mins or so to help the gearbox etc this prolongs the life of the clutch , the problems I’ve had over six years are:
    Throttle actuators x2
    Oil cooler rad
Oil seal leak on rear diff
Coil packs ( 2nd one was last week) ,
That is all I’ve had regarding problems with this car , it’s definitely worth purchasing a fault code reader / scanner , I’ve been using my mates Foxwell auto master pro which is brilliant plus there not to expensive , this told me that cylinder 4 coil pack was faulty a few days ago so worth its weight in gold tbh. One more bit of advice mine is only used as a weekend toy in the good weather , I wouldn’t recommend this car as a commuter , it’s a very addictive car to drive every time I put my foot down regarding the noise coming from the exhaust and even though it’s nearly 17 years old it’s still pretty quick for a big naturally aspirated heavy car and yes the top end is definitely 200 mph which is just crazy for a four door saloon family car. 👍🇬🇧
Forgot to mention , preventative maintenance that needs to be carried out is :
    Rod bearings ( obviously)
Throttle actuators ( they will fail )
Injectors ( in case of hydrolocking )
Vanos pipe ( this is done when the rod bearings are changed )

Now I own a 6 speed never a check engine light other than it run leans from time to time. ( emissions light ) Other than that I love these cars. Owned many many M cars. CS 3.0, M3 - 2002 , M5 2001 and many more. Here's the deal with the e63 and the e60. You MUST change the oil every 1500 miles. It's actually written underneath the hood above the front panel. Change engine oil 1500 miles. Most people wait for 3k , 5k or even 10k... That's crazy to me. I'd definitely stop by your shop if I were in Texas.
Picked up a CLS 63 S 2014 over 2 years ago. Drives nice a little bit of a floater super reliable. Never a check engine light.
