Recently YT Porsche 944 extraordinaire Edredas claimed that there's no truth to the odometer gear being likely to break if you reset it while under way. i should ask him to expand on that a bit...
The numbers on the milometer on my '87 928 don't 100% line up but otherwise it still functions. I suppose it could be this gear that is causing the misaligned numbers too. I think i'll buy the gear to keep in reserve in case I do have a failure.
@@bremarashford yes, the fact it seized on the shaft and has gone soft is much more likely to be the issue - I think I might continue to only reset mine while stationary though!
Excellent. Thank you. Doing this right now with a new gear same as yours. Did your mileometer work after this ? Mine didn’t and think the electric motor might be faulty.
Yes it worked. For me that was the reason I put a replacement cog in the unit. Unfortunately I don’t know anything about the electronic side of these speedometers.
the gears break because VDO factory used some kind of grease which is chemically destroying the plastic causing it to be fragile

Odometer doesn't cause gear to break. Just an old tale. Cause of breakage is plastic gets old and soft
Thanks. Might replace the magnetic push rod then.
