    Oh nice! Always happy to see someone enjoying Ys!
    And to answer your question, yeah, all Ys games are connected. They’re typically pretty self-contained in their main plot, but build on each other with compounding worldbuilding and occasional returning characters.
    The framing of the series is that each game (with the exception of Origin) is a story recorded in Adol’s adventure journal, cataloguing his experiences over about a decade (so far) of adventuring. With each entry we learn more about the world, get to experience new regions and cultures, and see how the geopolitical climate of the world’s superpowers progresses.

      Yea! Really loved this one and I'm probably going to pick up the PS5 version of Ys IX: Monstrum Nox when its released.
      Thanks a lot for the info, that's really interesting! I'll have to look into the story lines that I've missed. I think the only other game I can play with a PS5/ Nintendo Switch would be Memories of Celceta right? If so, I'll pick that up soon, its pretty cheap. Anyway, thanks for watching!👍🏻

      @@ConsolesOnlyGaming Sure thing!
      And yeah, the only other Ys game on those systems would be Origin, which is a great game, but probably the only one in the series that I wouldn’t recommend playing “first.” It’s best played after “I&II Chronicles” (the first two games, usually compiled as one in modern releases since they’re basically a part 1 and part 2 thing.)
      Don’t suppose you have a PSP or Vita? Most of the rest would be playable on there. (With the exception of VI, which is PS2/PC, and V which never had an *official* western release.)

      Noooo, I dont I'm afraid. I've been looking to get both of them for ages but the price keeps going up and I just cant warrant the money at the moment lol. That said, I CAN emulate rather easily so might be able to do that. I think Ys Books 1 & 2 were on the PC Engine/ Turbografx right?

    • @Sonnance
      @Sonnance ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ConsolesOnlyGaming Originally, yeah. Though they were remade as “I&II Chronicles” for PSP, later Steam (don’t play the DS version, if memory serves) which is the way most people go. Same gameplay, but updated visuals, audio, and localization (by XSEED, even) from what I remember.
      Played a bit of the Turbografx version back when Wii Virtual Console was a thing, and from what I recall the core of the game was preserved in Chronicles, (which is the version I actually beat) but I haven’t checked super thoroughly, admittedly.
      Don’t think you can go wrong with either, but Chronicles is the one I typically recommend, being newer and so more accessible.
      Either way, good game(s), but fair warning that the combat is pretty unique. Takes some getting used to.

    Absolute masterpiece, one of my favorite games of the last decade.
    Make sure to check out The Oath in Felghana as well, the PC version runs on every toaster.

      I've heard similar praise from a lot of different people and after playing the game, I definitley see why. Unfortunately, I dont play games on PC but I'll look the game up on TH-cam and see what its all about. Thanks a lot for watching!

    This is the best version of the game; I owned the PS4 version and was hesitant to buy the pS5 version, but decided to do so when it went 50% off on PSN... and I'm thankful I did it. The PS5 version is the most beautiful I've seen, and it feels great to have it becaus this is one of my top 3 games of all time.

    They are connected as others have said, though they are self contained stories. Playing all helps understand the references.

      That's cool, maybe I'll watch a video on the history of the series. I own PS5, Series X and Nintendo Switch, I dont think I can play anything other than Ys 9, Ys 8, Memories of Celceta and Origins right?

      @@ConsolesOnlyGaming If you want to use GOG they have a few others there, Seven, Ark of Napishtim, Oath of Felghana and I & 2 Chronicles.

      That's cool but GOG is a PC thing right? Im not 100% sure as I dont play any games on PC whatsoever, I dont use Steam either.

    From what i understand it's a bit of both. Each story is its own arc but aspects and characters come back from here and there. I actually played Ys Origins (a game that came out in 2006 for the PSP that didnt get an english release till 2012. i played th switch version and if it goes on sale i'd recommend it) myself for the first time this year and that was a good time SUPER linear though like no sidequests at all only really going back for plot related reasons but i had a good time it was a solid game
    As for the translation TLDR the game originally had a very infamous translation hob with typos abound but by then it had been rectified so that's what people were talking about. i do wanna try more of these games like 1 and 2 or other games.

      Ah, I see, thanks for the info man. I appreciate it. I have seen Origins around, just never picked it up. I meant to play it ages ago but never got around to it so maybe one day I will. Also, that makes sense in regards to the translation, I kinda assued that it may have been updated since those comments were made. Anyway, thanks man, appreciate you watching the video😊👍🏻

      Ys origin is the only Ys game with that engine that wasn't ported to the PSP. It was PC only until Dot.Emu did the PS4/PSVita ports.

    I think I played this on the switch and to be honest the performance wasn't that bad. Obviously on the switch it wasn't as shiny on the more powerful systems but still not bad. It's good to know you enjoyed the game.

    • @ConsolesOnlyGaming
      @ConsolesOnlyGaming  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey John! Yea, it seems to have been quite well optimized for all systems which is genuinely nice to see. The PS5 version of the game, that I played here, was released in Nov 2022, so its relatively new and has all the bells and whistles. That said, the Switch version would be cool to own so that you can play it anytime and anywhere. Im tempted to buy it on Switch myself, if im honest. Thanks very much for watching as usual, always great to see you around!👍🏻

    Between Altelier Sophie 2 & Fire Emblem this may have to wait a couple weeks though~

      Haha yea, I noticed that he really loves this game and I can see why. Its just a solid action RPG and I think its well worth playing but if you're already playing something else right now, there's no harm in waiting. If you do play it, I really hope you have a good time with it. Thanks a lot for watching my video, I appreciate it!👍🏻

    I'll definitely check this out. I have been in the market for a new RPG.
    what was your opinion on this particular story? Maybe I started to space a little, but I just remember your talking about its continuity with the other titles.

    • @ConsolesOnlyGaming
      @ConsolesOnlyGaming  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, definitely worth a go! I really like the story, I just kept wanting to know what would happen next. I like all the characters and I think its voiced well (I played with English dub). A lot of the other viewers have explained the continuity better than I could but in short, they're connected but each game is playable by itself. Thanks for watching as always!

    Ah Ys 8, one of my favorite jrpgs ever, I still fondly remember when I got it and got me into Ys. Smooth combat, interesting story. And of course, there's Little Paro in it (even got its avatar on my psn, best euro ever spent)
    Although screw the 40 bucks upgrade, other games do it for free! Ah well, I know someday I'll get it. Just not at 40!

    • @ConsolesOnlyGaming
      @ConsolesOnlyGaming  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, I can see why! Its shooting up my list very quickly, I have to say. I really enjoyed it and I dunno what else to say, its just brilliant. Haha Little Paro is great as well. I do agree on the upgrade price but the PS5 version would be great for people who've never played the game before. Little expensive for existing players though. I do plan to play the PS5 version of Ys IX: Monstrum Nox as well, I imagine it'll be a similar situation to Ys VIII's release. Thanks for watching and commenting, I appreciate it😊
